Elliot Perlman Books Overview

Three Dollars

Winner of The Age Book of the Year in Australia, Three Dollars is about Eddie, an honest, compassionate man who finds himself, at the age of thirty eight, with a wife, a child, and Three Dollars. At any other time the world would have smiled on him. But this is the nineties and the world values other things. A brilliantly deft and poignant portrait of a man attempting to retain his humanity, his family, and his sense of humor in a corporate world.

Seven Types of Ambiguity

Elliot Perlman has established himself as one of Australia’s most perceptive and accomplished novelists with his critically acclaimed bestselling novels Three Dollars and Seven Types of Ambiguity which was shortlisted for Australia’s top literary prize, the Miles Franklin Award, alongside J.M. Coetzee, Peter Carey and Shirley Hazzard, and his short story collection, The Reasons I Won’t Be Coming. Following years of unrequited love, an out of work schoolteacher decides to take matters into his own hands, triggering a chain of events that neither he nor his psychiatrist could have anticipated. At once a psychological thriller and a social critique, Seven Types of Ambiguity is a story of obsessive love in an age of obsessive materialism. It’s a story of impulse and paralysis, of empty marriages, lovers and a small boy, gambling and the market, of adult children and their parents, of poetry and prostitution, psychiatry and the law. Brim*ming with emotional, intellectual and moral dilemmas, this page turning novel reminiscent of the richest fiction of the nineteenth century in its labyrinthine complexity unfolds at a rapid fire pace to reveal the full extent to which these people have been affected by each other and by the insecure and uncertain times in which they live. Our times, now.

The Street Sweeper

Lamont Williams is a paroled felon looking to turn his life around, working as a street sweeper at a large city hospital and searching for his estranged daughter. Adam Zignelik is a struggling, nontenured professor, paralyzed by looming failure, his life falling apart around him. He discovers a cache of recordings of previously unheard voices reaching out from a horrific past, voices that can both save his career and bring him back to the woman he loves. At the same time, Lamont forges an unlikely friendship with a dying man, who, having lived through those horrors, has a crucially important story to tell and to preserve. The worlds surrounding these two men, their families, their pasts, their potential futures, swirl in and out of history as the forces of the Holocaust, the American civil rights movement, Chicago unions, and New York City racial politics combine in a thrilling cross generational literary symphony. The acclaimed author of Seven Types of Ambiguity, Elliot Perlman weaves the narratives of Lamont and Adam and their myriad connected friends, lovers, and families into an ambitious, masterful depiction of the power that memory has over our lives.

The Reasons I Won’t Be Coming

A collection of nine stories, full of passion and intelligence, from the author of the national bestseller Seven Types of Ambiguity. The nine smart, thoughtful stories in this collection explore the complex worlds of lovers, poets, lawyers, immigrants, students, and murderers. They tell of corporate betrayals and lost opportunities, and the hopes, fears, and vagaries of desire. Witty, vulnerable, and honest, they display the same preoccupations that made Perlman’s novel, Seven Types of Ambiguity, one of the most notable literary publications of 2004.
