The Four Just Men

Richard Horatio Edgar Wallace 1875 1932 was a prolific British crime writer, journalist and playwright, who wrote 175 novels, 24 plays, and countless articles in newspapers and journals. Edgar Wallace was born in Yarmouth, Greenwich, Norfolk. His biological parents were actors Richard Horatio Edgar who never knew of his existence and Mary Jane ‘Polly’ Richards, nee Blair. Known as Richard Freeman, Edgar had a happy childhood, forming an especially close bond with 20 year old Clara Freeman who became like a second mother to him. His foster father George Freeman was an honourable and kind man and determined to ensure Richard received a good education. He is most famous today as the co creator of King Kong, writing the early screenplay and story for the movie, as well as a short story King Kong 1933 credited to him and Draycott Dell. He was known for the J. G. Reeder detective stories, The Four Just Men, The Ringer, and for creating the Green Archer character during his lifetime. His other works include: The Angel of Terror 1922, The Clue of the Twisted Candle 1916, and The Daffodil Mystery 1920.

The Council of Justice

There are crimes for which no punishment is adequate, offences that the written law cannot efface. Herein lies the justification for The Council of Justice a meeting of great and passionless intellects. These men are indifferent to world opinion. They relentlessly wage their wits and cunning against powerful underworld organisations, against past masters of villainy and against minds equally astute. To breakers of the unwritten laws they deal death.

The Just Men of Cordova

There are crimes for which no punishment is adequate, offences that the written law cannot redress. The three friends, Pioccart, Manfred and Gonsalez, may be enjoying the exotic, Spanish city of Cordova with its heat and Moorish influences, but they are still committed to employing their intellect and cunning to dispense justice. They use their own methods and carry out their own verdicts. They are ruthless and they deal in death.

The Three Just Men

If you like a villain to be a proper villain then Oberzhon is the genuine article. What a villain! What an adventure! There are crimes for which no punishment is adequate, offences that the written law cannot efface. When conventional justice fails The Three Just Men employ their great intellect and cunning. They use their own methods, carry out their own verdicts. There can be no compromise.

The Admirable Carfew

Gregory Carfew is ‘an unparalleled master of descriptive’. Felix Carfew ‘writes a vile hand’. There is a new boy on the desk at The Megaphone and it is Felix who is handed the envelope. Finding himself on Ambassador Greishen’s special train, then on a steamer to Ostend, Felix recklessly exploits the opportunity. At 3. 00 a.m. Gregory gets an urgent telegram. Bones

Sanders is leaving Africa! Trouble has beset the popular and respected Commissioner in recent weeks. Bosambo, Chief of the Ochori, made himself scarce just before the arrival of bumbling English Cabinet Minister Blowter who was abducted and then strangely rescued…
and now, out of the blue, the Commissioner is granted six months’ leave. This puts Sanders’ unsettled sector of Africa under the oversight of Hamilton of the Houssas, together with an entirely unknown and probably inexperienced young man named Francis Augustus Tibbetts promptly dubbed ‘Bones‘ upon his arrival. Trouble begins from the start. As news spreads of the Commissioner’s departure, N’gori, the Chief of the Akasava, sets his drums to calling for a dance of many days. A dance of many days spells ‘spears’ and spears spell trouble! English novelist Edgar Wallace 1875 1932 was author of Sanders of the River, Jack O’ Judgment, and The Angel of Terror, among many other popular novels.

The Secret House

The Secret House MAN stood irresolutely before the imposing portals of Cainbury House, a large office building let out to numerous small tenants, and harbouring, as the indicator on the tiled wall of the vestibule testified, some thirty different professions. The man was evidently poor, for his clothes were shabby and his boots were down at heel. He was as evidently a foreigner. His clean shaven eagle face was sallow, his eyes were dark, his eyebrows black and straight. He passed up the few steps into the hall and stood thoughtfully before the indicator. Presently he found what he wanted. At the very top of the list and amongst the crowded denizens of the fifth floor was a slip inscribed: He took from his waistcoat pocket a newspaper cutting and compared the two then stepped briskly, 5 CHAPTER i THE GOSSIP’S CORNERAbout the Publisher Forgotten Books is a publisher of historical writings, such as: Philosophy, Classics, Science, Religion, History, Folklore and Mythology. The Man Who Knew

1918. Edgar Wallace established his reputation as a writer of detective thrillers, a genre in which he wrote more than 170 books, with the publication of The Four Just Men. The book begins: The room was a small one, and had been chosen for its remoteness from the dwelling rooms. It had formed the billiard room, which the former owner of Weald Lodge had added to his premises, and John Minute, who had neither the time nor the patience for billiards, had readily handed over this damp annex to his scientific secretary. Gregory from a Lambeth gutter, and he was dead before the policeman on point duty in Waterloo Road, who had heard the shots, came upon the scene. He had been shot in his tracks on a night of snow and storm and none saw the murder. When they got him to the mortuary and searched his clothes they found nothing except a little tin box of white powder which proved to be cocaine, and a playing card the Jack of Clubs n His associates had called him Snow Gregory because he was a doper, and cocaine is invariably referred to as snow by all its votaries. He was a gambler too, and he had been associated with Colonel Dan Boundary in certain of his business enterprises. That was all. The colonel knew nothing of the young mans antecedents except that he had been an Oxford man who had come down in the world. The colonel added a few particulars designed, as it might seem to the impartial observer, to prove that he, the colonel, had ever been an uplifting quantity. This colonelcy was an honorary title which he held by custom rather than by law. There were people who said that Snow Gregory, in his more exalted moments, talked too much for the colonels comfort, but people were very ready to talk unkindly of the colonel, whose wealth was an offence and a shame. So they buried Snow Gregory, the unknown, and a jury of his fellow countrymen returned a verdict of Wilful murder against some person or persons unknown. And that was the end of a sordid tragedy, it seemed, until three months later there dawned upon Colonel Boundarys busy life a brand new and alarming factor. One morning there arrived at his palatial flat in Albemarle Place a letter. This he opened because it was marked Private and Personal. It was not a letter at all as it proved but a soiled and stained playing card, the Knave of Clubs. He looked at the thing in perplexity, for the fate of his erstwhile assistant had long since passed from his mind. Then he saw writing on the margin of the card, and twisting it sideways read Nothing more ack 0 Judgment The colonel screwed up his tired eyes as if to shut out a vision. Faugh he said in disgust and dropped the pasteboard into his waste paper basket. For he had seen a vision a white face, unshaven and haggard, its lips parted in a little grin, the smile of Snow Gregory on the last time they had met. Later came other cards and unpleasant, not to say disconcerting happenings, and the colonel, taking counsel with himself, determined to kill two birds with one stone…

King Kong

Introduction by Greg Bear
Preface by Mark Cotta Vaz

The giant prehistoric gorilla King Kong is one of the most recognized images in our culture. So great is the mighty Kong’s hold on the popular imagination that his story a gripping yarn of man versus nature, coupled with a fantastical update of the Beauty and the Beast legend has been thrice made into a motion picture most recently in 2005 and referenced endlessly in every medium, from books to prime time sitcoms.

Beneath King Kong s cultural significance, however, is a tense and surprisingly tender story. One cannot help but be frightened by Kong s uncontrollable fury, be saddened over the giant s capture, mistreatment, and exploitation by venal showmen, or sympathize with the beast s ill fated affection for the down on her luck starlet Ann Darrow.

This Modern Library edition of a true colossus among adventure stories is reprinted from the original 1932 novelization of the movie script, and includes a Preface by Mark Cotta Vaz, the preeminent biographer of Merian C. Cooper, producer of the original 1933 classic film.
