In the Balkans Roman control was threatened bv the invasions of the fearsome Avar federation and by migrations of the Slav tribes, but by the end of Maurice’s reign energetic campaigning along the Danube had begun to re-establish imperial authority. -- Theophylact was no military expert, and he compiled his History almost a generation after the latest events that he recounted; as a result his narrative is sometimes unclear or misleading.
