Charles Babbage was a man ahead of his time. His designs for computers and printers were a marvel. Babbage was an 18th century British mathematician, philosopher and mechanical engineer. He originated the concept of a programmable computer and is credited with inventing the first mechanical computer. Parts of his uncompleted mechanisms are on display in the London Science Museum. In 1991 a perfectly functioning difference engine was constructed from Babbage's original plans. In the introduction to On the Economy of Machinery and Manufactures Babbage states :' The object of the present volume is to point out the effects and the advantages which arise from the use of tools and machines; to endeavour to classify their modes of action; and to trace both the causes and the consequences of applying machinery to supersede the skill and power of the human arm.''
