Book Description:
Tribal members of the original Iroquois Confederacy Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, and Seneca lived in a communal household called a longhouse. Iroquois songs of the longhouse are among the earliest annotated music from the Americas. Father Gabriel Sagard recognized as early as 1623 that a characteristic of Iroquois songs was the preponderance of nonsense (or burden) syllables recurring in regular meter. Included in the song collection are the Creator's Songs, songs of medicine societies, of war and peace, and social dances. 1 CD (47 min.) and 42 p. booklet. From the Archives of Folk Culture of the Library of Congress. Reissued on CD in 2005. Order No. S11156D.
