The illuminated manuscript known as the Lindisfarne Gospels is among the great masterpieces of early medieval book painting. It was produced early in the eighth century at Lindisfarne, an island monastic community near the coast of Northumberland. Its creators were Eadfrith, Bishop of Lindisfarne, and Ethelwald, who succeeded him in 721. Another monk is said to have further ornamented the Gospels during Ethelwald s bishopric. Except for the loss of its original binding, the Lindisfarne Gospels has survived virtually intact. Twelve richly colorful pages from this magnificent manuscript are reproduced here.Published with the British Library. Size: 12 x 13 in.; opens to 12 x 26 in.
