Antonina; Or, The Fall of Rome

Excerpt from book: hold the portentous spectacle. For the remainder of the evening the banqueting tables were unapproached by the guests. The wretched Emperor was surprised among his poultry by that dreaded intelligence. He too, hastened to the windows; and, looking forth, saw the army of avengers passing in contempt his solitary fortress, and moving swiftly onward towards defenceless Rome. Long after the darkness had hidden the mas*ses of that mighty multitude from his eyes, did he remain staring helplessly upon the fading landscape, in a stupor of astonishment and dread; and for the first time since he had possessed them, his flocks of fowls were left for that night unattended by their master’s hand. CHAPTER I1J. Rome. The perusal of the title to this chapter will we fear excite emotions of apprehension, rather than of curiosity, in the breasts of experienced readers. They will doubtless imagine that it is portentous of long rhapsodies on those wonders of antiquity, the description of which has long since become absolutely nauseous to them by incessant iteration. They will foresee wailings over the Palace of the Caesars, and meditations among the arches of the Colosseum, loading a long series of weary paragraphs to the very chapter’s end; and, considerately anxious to spare their attention a task from which it recoils, they will unanimously hurry past the dreaded desert of conventional reflection, to alight on the first oasis that may present itself, whether it be formed by a new division of the story, or suddenly indicated by the appearance of a dialogue. Animated, therefore, by apprehensions such as these, we hasten to assure them, that in no instance will the localities of our story trench upon the limits of the well worn Forum, or mount the arches of the exhausted Colosseum. Hide and Seek

William Wilkie Collins 1824 1889 was an English novelist, playwright, and writer of short stories. He was hugely popular in his time, and wrote 27 novels, more than 50 short stories, at least 15 plays, and over 100 pieces of non fiction work. His best known works are The Woman in White 1860, The Moonstone 1868, Armadale 1866 and No Name 1862. His works were classified at the time as ‘sensation novels’, a genre seen nowadays as the precursor to detective fiction and suspense fiction. He also wrote penetratingly on the plight of women and on the social and domestic issues of his time. His novel, No Name combined social commentary the absurdity of the law as it applied to children of unmarried parents with a densely plotted revenge thriller. Amongst his other works are: Basil 1852, Hide and Seek 1854, After the Dark 1856, The Frozen Deep 1857, The Queen of Hearts 1859, Man and Wife 1870, The New Magdalen 1873, The Law and the Lady 1875, The Two Destinies 1876, and A Rogue’s Life 1879.

The Dead Secret

Having previously tried my hand at short serial stories collected and reprinted in _After Dark,_ and _The Queen of Hearts,_ I ventured on my first attempt, in this book, to produce a sustained work of fiction, intended for periodical publication during many successive weeks. The experiment proved successful both in this country and in America. Two of the characters which appear in these pages ‘Rosamond,’ and ‘Uncle Joseph’ had the good fortune to find friends everywhere who took a hearty liking to them. A more elaborately drawn personage in the story ‘Sarah Leeson’ was, I think, less generally understood. The idea of tracing, in this character, the influence of a heavy responsibility on a naturally timid woman, whose mind was neither strong enough to bear it, nor bold enough to drop it altogether, was a favorite idea with me, at the time, and is so much a favorite still, that I privately give ‘Sarah Leeson’ the place of honor in the little portrait gallery which my story contains. Perhaps, in saying this, I am only acknowledging, in other words, that the parents of literary families share the well known inconsistencies of parents in general, and are sometimes unreasonably fond of the child who has always given them the most trouble. Wilkie Collins, _January, 1861_

A Rogue’s Life

A delightful tale of thwarted ambition and forbidden love, A Rogue’s Life follows the fortunes of an endearing young man. Proffering his own take on picaresque storytelling and with many a grain of truth for twenty somethings today this is Wilkie Collins at his entertaining best.

Propelled into society by his ever hopeful father, Frank Softly is introduced to a variety of professions in order to make his fortune. Not industrious by nature, however, Frank finds working life a challenge, and by his twenty fifth birthday, he has failed medicine, portrait painting, caricaturing, and even forgery. Disenchanted with life, he despairs of ever finding something to commit to until he meets Alicia Dulcifer and her inexplicably wealthy father. The author of The Woman in White and The Moonstone, Wilkie Collins 1824 89 is widely regarded as the originator of the detective novel.

Barnes & Noble Classics pulls together a constellation of influences biographical, historical, and literary to enrich each reader’s understanding of these enduring works. One of the greatest mystery thrillers ever written, Wilkie Collins’s The Woman in White was a phenomenal bestseller in the 1860s, achieving even greater success than works by Dickens, Collins s friend and mentor. Full of surprise, intrigue, and suspense, this vastly entertaining novel continues to enthrall readers today. The story begins with an eerie midnight encounter between artist Walter Hartright and a ghostly woman dressed all in white who seems desperate to share a dark secret. The next day Hartright, engaged as a drawing master to the beautiful Laura Fairlie and her half sister, tells his pupils about the strange events of the previous evening. Determined to learn all they can about the mysterious woman in white, the three soon find themselves drawn into a chilling vortex of crime, poison, kidnapping, and international intrigue. Masterfully constructed, The Woman in White is dominated by two of the finest creations in all Victorian fiction Marion Halcombe, dark, mannish, yet irresistibly fascinating, and Count Fosco, the sinister and flamboyant Napoleon of Crime. Camille Cauti earned a Ph.D. in English from Columbia University. Her dissertation concerns the Catholic conversion trend among the London avant garde of the 1890s. She has also published articles in Italian American studies. She works in New York City as an editor and critic.

No Name

The main purpose of this story is to appeal to the reader’s interest in a subject which has been the theme of some of the greatest writers, living and dead but which has never been, and can never be, exhausted, because it is a subject eternally interesting to all mankind. Here is one more book that depicts the struggle of a human creature, under those opposing influences of Good and Evil, which we have all felt, which we have all known. It has been my aim to make the character of ‘Magdalen,’ which personifies this struggle, a pathetic character even in its perversity and its error; and I have tried hard to attain this result by the least obtrusive and the least artificial of all means by a resolute adherence throughout to the truth as it is in Nature. This design was no easy one to accomplish; and it has been a great encouragement to me during the publication of my story in its periodical form to know, on the authority of many readers, that the object which I had proposed to myself, I might, in some degree, consider as an object achieved. A thrilling narrative involving fraud, romantic jealousy and attempted murder. The chilling description of an abortionist with a bizarre clinic is unforgettable. Collins skilfully weaves a complex plot and presents several characters with the same name of Alan Armadale. It is a marvellous and amusing book that is guaranteed to keep you interested till the end.

The Moonstone

The Moonstone, by Wilkie Collins, is part of the Barnes & Noble Classics series, which offers quality editions at affordable prices to the student and the general reader, including new scholarship, thoughtful design, and pages of carefully crafted extras. Here are some of the remarkable features of Barnes & Noble Classics: All editions are beautifully designed and are printed to superior specifications; some include illustrations of historical interest. Barnes & Noble Classics pulls together a constellation of influences biographical, historical, and literary to enrich each reader’s understanding of these enduring works. Alongside Edgar Allan Poe in America, Britain’s Wilkie Collins stands as the inventor of the modern detective story. The Moonstone introduces all the ingredients: a homey, English country setting, and a colorfully exotic background in colonial India; the theft of a fabulous diamond from the lovely hero*ine; a bloody murder and a tragic suicide; a poor hero in love with the hero*ine but suspected of the crime, who can t remember anything about the night the jewel was stolen; assorted friends, relatives, servants, a lawyer, a doctor, a sea captain suspects, all; and, most essentially, a bumbling local policeman and a brilliant if eccentric London detective. Adding spice to the recipe are unexpected twists, a bit of dark satire, a dash of social comment, and an unusual but effective narrative structure eleven different voices relate parts of the tale, each revealing as much about himself and, in one case, herself as about the mystery of the missing Moonstone. Filled with suspense, action, and romance, The Moonstone is as riveting and intoxicating today as it was when it first appeared more than a century ago. Joy Connolly teaches in the Classics Department at New York University. Her recent research includes the history of rhetoric and political thought, and the relationship of literature and ethics. She writes book reviews for the New York Times and other publications.

Man and Wife

PREFACE THE Story here offered to the reader lliffers in one respect from the stories which have preceded it by the same hand. This time the fiction is founded on facts, and aspires to afford what help it may towards hastening the reform of certain abuses which have been too long suffered to exist among us unchecked. As to the present scandalous condition of the Marriage Laws of the United Kingdom, there can be no dispute. The Report of the Royal Commission appointed to examillle the working of those laws, has supplied the solid foundation on which I have built my book. Such references to this high authority as may be necessary to convince the reader that 1 am not leading him astray, will be found collected in the Appendix. I have only to add that, while I write these lines, Parliament is bestirring itself to remedy the cruel abuses which are here exposed in the story of ‘ Hester Dethridge.’ There is a prospect, at last, of lawfully establishing the right of a marriTable of Contents co N rE N rs; PROLOGUE; THE IRISH :IARRIA;E; I’ART; J THE VILLA T HA IPSTE:n; II THE :IARCH OF TDIE; THE STORY; FIRST SCE E THE SC:DIER HOCSE; I THE OWLS; II THE ;llESTS; III THE llISCOVERIE: ;; 1′ THE TWO; V THE I’LX; ‘1 THE SUITOK; VII THE IEI:T; ‘111 THE C:: ilLL; SEeo; SCE E THE I N; IX E; X IR m: iHOI’RIC;S; XI SIR I’XfRICK; XII :RXOLll; XIII BI,: iCHE; 33; 35; 44; 53; 61; 65; 75; 82; CZ THIRD SCENE LONDON; CHAPTER; XIV GEOFFREY AS A LETTER WRITER ?; XV GEOFFREY IN THE MARRIAGE MARKET; XVI GEOFFREY AS A PUBLIC CHARACTER; FOURTH SCENE VINDYGATES; XVII NEAR IT; XVIII NEARER STILL; XIX CLOSE ON IT; XX TOUCHINC; IT; XXI IN IT; XXII SCARED; XXIII DONE; XXIV GONE; XXV FOLLOWED; XXVI LOST; XXVII TRACED; XXVIII BACKWARDS; XXIX FORWARDS; X*X DROPPED; X*XI OlJ’nnTTEJ; X*XII STIFLED; FIFTH SCENE GLASGOW; X*XIII ANNE ‘IONC TH

Poor Miss Finch

Wilkie Collin’s intriguing story about a blind girl, Lucilla Finch, and the identical twins who both fall in love with her, has the exciting complications of his better known novels, but it also overturns conventional expectations. Using a background of myth and fairy tale to expand the boundaries of nineteenth century realist fiction, Collins not only takes a blind person as his central character but also explores the idea of blindness and its implications. His sensitive presentation of the difficulties, disappointments, and occasional delights which follow the recovery of sight by someone blind since infancy is still one of the best accounts in fiction of a problem which continues to intrigue philosophers, psychologists, and the general public, as it has done since it was first discussed by Locke and Berkeley in the eighteenth century. About the Series: For over 100 years Oxford World’s Classics has made available the broadest spectrum of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford’s commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, voluminous notes to clarify the text, up to date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

Wilkie Collins’s The New Magdalen 1873 opens in France in 1870 the year of the war between France and Germany. Mercy, a former prostitute and nurse with the French ambulance service during the war, assumes the identity of an Englishwoman, Lady Roseberry, in order to live a secure and respectable life. Who Killed Zebedee?

Undisputed master of sensation fiction and forefather of the modern crime story, Wilkie Collins was also a supreme chronicler of the dark underside of Victorian London. Chilling in the extreme, these three short stories of murder and suspense are outstanding examples of his craft. Setting himself in front of the station fire, a young policeman is little prepared for the account of bloody murder that will be relayed that night. It seems that Mrs. Crosscapel’s lodging house is a place of dark secrets and buried passions emotions that will soon cloud even his own judgment. As with the other short stories included here, Who Killed Zebedee?? is a brilliant and highly original tale of horror and the macabre. Foreword by Martin Jarvis.

Mr. Lismore And The Widow

The one security that he could offer was open, it must be owned, to serious objections on the score of risk. He wanted an advance of twenty thousand pounds, secured on a homeward bound ship and cargo. But the vessel was not insured, and at that stormy season she was already more than a month overdue. Could grateful colleagues be blamed if they forgot their obligations when they were asked to offer pecuniary help to a merchant in this situation? Ernest returned to his office without money and without credit.

I Say No

When orphaned Emily Brown runs out of money and has to leave Miss Ladd’s school for young ladies, her life becomes a mystery novel. The mystery that reveals itself to her has to do with the murder of her father…
. A teacher Sarah Jethro, dismissed when her references are discovered to be forged, says her good byes to Emily and reveals that she had once known Emily’s father but refuses to elaborate. Masterful drawing Teacher Alban Morris is in love with Emily. Emily secures a position in Northumberland as secretary to Sir Jervis Redwood, and when Mrs. Rook of his staff comes to collect Emily, she’s astounded to see that Emily wears her father’s locket recording his death on 30 September 1877, the same date as the murder at the Hand in Hand Inn in Hampshire. Mrs. Rook and her husband owned the inn until it was forced to close after the gruesome murder of Emily’s father. When Mrs. Rook is hurt in a railway accident, she confesses that she stole the bloodstained pocket book from Emily’s already dead father. The pocket book still has a note from Miss Jethro containing only the words ‘I Say No.’…

Excerpt from book: THE QUEEN OF HEARTS, CHAPTER I. OURSELVES. We were three quiet, lonely old men, and She was a lively, handsome young woman, and we were at our wits’ end what to do with her. A word about ourselves, first of all a necessary word to explain the singular situation of our fair young guest. We are three brothers; and we live in a barbarous, dismal old house called The Glen Tower. Our place of abode stands in a hilly, lonesome district of South Wales. No such thing as a line of railway runs any where near us. No gentleman’s seat is within an easy drive of us. We are at an unspeakably inconvenient distance from a town, and the village to which we send for our letters is three miles off. My eldest brother, Owen, was brought up to the Church. All the prime of his life was passed in a populous London parish. For more years than I now like to reckon up, he worked unremittingly, in defiance of failing health and adverse fortune, amid the multitudinous misery of the London poor; and he would, in all probability, have sacrificed his life to his duty long before the present time if The Glen Tower had not come into his possession through two unexpected deaths in the elder and richer branch of our family. This opening to himof a place of rest and refuge saved his life. No man ever drew breath who better deserved the gifts of for tune; for no man, I sincerely believe, more tender of others, more diffident of himself, more gentle, more generous, and more simple hearted than Owen, ever walked this earth. My second brother, Morgan, started in life as a doctor, and learned all that his profession could teach him at home and abroad. He realized a moderate independence by his practice, beginning in one of our large northern towns, and ending as a physician in London; but, although h…

The Evil Genius

Wilkie Collins is best known for his great mystery The Moonstone and The Woman in White and for a life as sensational as are those novels. The writer who famously advised other novelists to ‘make ’em laugh, make ’em cry, make ’em wait’ is now known to have kept entire households in different parts of England going simultaneously. Yet Collins also wrote a succession of extraordinarily powerful novels of private life; of these The Evil Genius is among the finest. The story is motivates by the attraction between Herbert Linley and the woman he hires as governess for his child Kitty the long suffering Sydney Westerfield. As one expects with Collins, the story is driven forward with deft assurance. Yet he also treats the theme of adultery and divorce in a manner quite unconventional for his time and, remarkably, he manages to draw readers into a sympathetic understanding of both of the main female characters: the offending governess and the aggrieved wife. The Evil Genius was a very considerable success when first published; indeed, it brought Collins more financially than any of his other works. Over a century later its sinews retain the strength to speak powerfully to the reader; lively and intelligent, it is perhaps the finest of Collins’ later novels.

The Guilty River

‘I acknowledge, at the outset, that misfortune has had an effect on me which frail humanity is for the most part anxious to conceal. Under the influence of suffering, I have become of enormous importance to myself. In this frame of mind, I naturally enjoy painting my own portrait in words. Let me add that they must be written words because it is a painful effort to me since I lost my hearing to speak to anyone continuously, for any length of time. I have also to confess that my brains are not so completely under my own command as I could wish. For instance, I possess considerable skill for an amateur as a painter in watercolors. But I can only produce a work of art, when irresistible impulse urges me to express my thoughts in form and color. The same obstacle to regular exertion stands in my way, if I am using my pen. I can only write when the fit takes me sometimes at night when I ought to be asleep; sometimes at meals when I ought to be handling my knife and fork; sometimes out of doors when I meet with inquisitive strangers who stare at me. As for paper, the first stray morsel of anything that I can write upon will do, provided I snatch it up in time to catch my ideas as they fly…

A House to Let

Compiled by Charles Dickens, and including chapters by Elizabeth Gaskell and Wilkie Collins, A House to Let is a composite tale of mystery and intrigue set amid the dark streets of Victorian London.

Advised by her doctor to have a change of scenery, the elderly Sophonisba takes up lodgings in London. Immediately intrigued by a nearby ‘house to let,’ she charges her two warring attendants, Trottle and Jarber, to unearth the secret behind its seeming desertedness. Rivals to the end, they each seek to outdo the other to satisfy their mistress’ curiosity; however, it is only after repeated false starts-and by way of elaborate tales of men lost at sea, circus performers, and forged death certificates- that they happen upon the truth. Charles Dickens 1812 70 is one of England’s most important literary figures. His works enjoyed enormous success in his day and are still among the most popular and widely read classics of all time.

The Haunted House

Compiled by Charles Dickens, and counting Elizabeth Gaskell and Wilkie Collins among its contributors, this rediscovered work is an ingenious collaborative tale of the supernatural with indelible touches of pure Dickensian comedy. Foreword by Peter Ackroyd.

When the narrator spies a deserted house from his railway carriage, he determines to take up residence. But local legend has it that this is a haunted house, and no servant will dare enter employment. Refusing to be thwarted, he instead invites a number of acquaintances to join him, commissioning each with the task of routing out any supernatural inhabitants. As they gather together on twelfth night, each recounts his version of the ghostly activities

A word about ourselves, first of all a necessary word to explain the singular situation of our fair young guest. We are three brothers; and we live in a barbarous, dismal old house called The Glen Tower. Our place of abode stands in a hilly, lonesome district of South Wales. The Dead Alive

On the evidence of The Dead Alive, Scott Turow writes in his foreword that Wilkie Collins might well be the first author of a legal thriller. Here is the lawyer out of sorts with his profession; the legal process gone awry; even a touch of romance to soften the rigors of the law. And here, too, recast as fiction, is the United States’ first documented wrongful conviction case. Side by side with the novel, this book presents the real life legal thriller Collins used as his model the story of two brothers, Jesse and Stephen Boorn, sentenced to death in Vermont in 1819 for the murder of their brother in law, and belatedly exonerated when their ‘victim’ showed up alive and well in New Jersey in 1820.

Rob Warden, one of the nation’s most eloquent and effective advocates for the wrongly convicted, reconsiders the facts of the Boorn case for what they can tell us about the systemic flaws that produced this first known miscarriage of justice flaws that continue to riddle our system of justice today. A tale of false confessions and jailhouse snitches, of evidence overlooked, and justice more blinkered than blind, the Boorns’ story reminds us of the perennial nature of the errors at the heart of American jurisprudence and of the need to question and correct a system that regularly condemns the innocent.

My Lady’s Money

OLD Lady Lydiard sat meditating by the fireside, with three letters lying open on her lap. Time had discolored the paper, and had turned the ink to a brownish hue. The letters were all addressed to the same person ‘THE RT. HON. LORD LYDIARD’ and were all signed in the same way ‘Your affectionate cousin, James Tollmidge.’ Judged by these specimens of his correspon dence, Mr. Tollmidge must have possessed one great merit as a letter writer the merit of brevity. He will weary nobody’s patience, if he is allowed to have a hearing. Let him, therefore, be permitted, in his own high flown way, to speak for himself. First Letter. ‘My statement, as your Lordship requests, shall be short and to the point. I was doing very well as a portrait painter in the country; and I had a wife and children to consider. Under the circumstances, if I had been left to decide for myself, I should certainly have waited until I had saved a little money before I ventured on the serious expense of taking a house and studio at the west end of London. Your Lordship, I positively declare, encouraged me to try the experiment without waiting.
