Greg Rucka Books Overview

Keeper

In a heartbeat, a crowded auditorium or a city street can become a kill zone, where life and death are separated by a split second. For Atticus Kodiak, professional bodyguard, the object is to keep people alive, and there is no margin for error. Now Kodiak faces his toughest challenge: to protect a woman and her daughter from a killer with a fanatic agenda of his own…
. Tense, taut, and as brutally real as this morning’s headlines, Keeper marks the debut of a talented young writer of tough, unflinching prose and the beginning of an electrifying new series.

Finder

As a bodyguard, Atticus Kodiak knows danger is part of the job. But he still can’t shake his guilt over his best friend’s death in their last assignment. As a bouncer at a hard core club on the Lower West Side, Atticus is responsible for nothing more than keeping the scene under control. Until he sees Erika Wyatt, the teenage daughter of an Army colonel Atticus once guarded. Stalked by a cold eyed commando fondling a wicked knife, Erika draws Atticus back into the protection business. In a case built on lies, vengeance, and sins of the past, Atticus is pulled into a vortex of treachery and violence, and learns that a promise can be the most dangerous weapon of all…
.

Smoker

Greg Rucka has won national acclaim for his two gripping thrillers, Finder and Keeper, which have been hailed as ‘impressive’ People, ‘remarkable’ The Orlando Sentinel, and ‘full of surprises’ The Houston Chronicle. Now, in Rucka’s most explosive novel to date, professional bodyguard Atticus Kodiak returns to confront an enemy without conscience or mercy a master of manipulation, a pure connoisseur of killing. For a professional bodyguard, there’s nothing worse than being tagged as a man who attracts danger. But after his last job, that’s just what they’re saying about Atticus Kodiak. In fact, there’s only one person in the business willing to touch him with a ten foot pole. An easy job, according to Elliot Trent, head of New York’s biggest security firm: baby sit a pampered playboy hiding from the angry brothers of an ex playmate. It’s a job Kodiak finds himself forced to accept, a decision that draws him into a multimillion dollar game of cat and mouse. The mouse: Jeremiah Pugh, a material witness whose testimony can knock the legs out from beneath America’s mighty tobacco industry. Racked with guilt, Pugh may be his own worst enemy. The cat: known only as John Doe, one of the Ten, designated by international law enforcement as one of the ten most dangerous contract killers in the world. A ghost, unknown and unidentified, who changes with the wind and adapts to any situation. Drawn into the field of fire by Elliot Trent, Atticus finds himself exactly where he doesn’t want to be between the killer and the target. For Atticus and the assassin are bound by a common thread: their obsession to get the job done. It’s an obsession that will connect the assassin and the protector in the most intimate of relationships, anticipating each other’s moves, exploiting each other’s weaknesses, baring each other’s secrets, and raising the stakes in a game where the first player to flinch…
dies. In Smoker, Atticus Kodiak meets his match in a thriller of unrelenting suspense guaranteed to suck you in, blow you away, and leave you breathless a novel that confirms Greg Rucka’s place among today’s top suspense writers.

Shooting at Midnight

Rucka breaks the rules! Read one of today’s most surprising and satisfying thriller writers. Greg Rucka has earned a devoted following for his edgy Atticus Kodiak thrillers, Finder, Keeper, and Smoker. But now, in an electrifying new suspense novel, Rucka puts us in the heart and brain of Kodiak’s friend and lover, Bridgett Logan, a young woman living life on her own terms, and living it on the edge. Private investigator Bridgett Logan has shared a great deal with Atticus Kodiak since they were brought together by a case. But there are secrets she has never shared the dark story of a nightmare that began when she was sixteen and has never really ended. It will only take a single moment of weakness to tear down the facade and the life she has struggled to build. One moment of weakness or one rash promise to help an old friend. Lisa Schoof knows the life Bridgett has escaped from the inside out. Her struggle to overcome her past has come at an even higher cost and with higher stakes. For Lisa wants to give her young son a life untouched by the horrors she has known. She will do anything to attain that one goal, at any cost to herself or her friends. To help Lisa, Bridgett must return to the hellish landscape of her past, into a dangerous world where death is a final mercy. But she has sworn Atticus will never know about the life she has put behind her, and so Bridgett walks alone, without backup, without explanation, vanishing from view. It’s a decision that may cost her dearly. For by the time Atticus learns why Bridgett has dropped from sight, it may be far too late…
. In Shooting at Midnight, Greg Rucka proves once more that he is writing some of the most authentic, electrifying thriller fiction in America today. A novel of complex personalities, nonstop action, and bravura plotting, this is the most remarkable work yet from a writer who allows his characters to walk the razor’s edge and makes his readers care.

Critical Space

The acclaimed author of Shooting at Midnight has penned a thriller like no other…

Code named Drama, she is a lightning fast death machine a hitwoman sought by intelligence agencies around the world. Drama kills as easily as she breathes…
and the last time she and Atticus Kodiak met, they barely escaped each other alive. Atticus Kodiak has a reputation as one of the toughest bodyguards in the business. He’s used to picking his assignments and calling the shots. But all that changes when he is forced to take on Drama as a client the last person he ever imagined would need his protection. This time, Drama is the one who is running from a killer. She needs Atticus s help, and she won t take no for an answer. To prove it, she abducts a high profile member of the royal family whom Atticus has sworn to protect. He will do almost anything to get the woman back. But what Drama needs from him will destroy his reputation and siding with her means he can never turn back. From New York s Russian enclaves to the Swiss Alps and the Caribbean, Atticus becomes Drama s protector, and her only hope for survival as she tries to outlive and outrun her bloody past. But once immersed in Drama s high stakes, covert world, Atticus breaks a cardinal rule: He gets to know Drama as a woman rather than just a client and it s a bond that could cost them both their lives. For the men hunting Drama are capable of unspeakable violence of sins that make Drama s own look like the acts of an amateur. And they will stop at nothing to see her dead…
.A masterful work by one of the most unique voices in the field, Critical Space combines high voltage, high tech action with swift, terrifying brutality. The result is Greg Rucka s most explosive thriller to date a powerhouse of a novel destined to become a classic of modern suspense. From the Hardcover edition.

Patriot Acts

This time the bodyguard turned fugitive must go underground to protect the woman he loves and a country he may have to betray to defend. You cannot learn what you have learned and remain unchanged. As a bodyguard, Atticus Kodiak once protected his clients against professional killers like Alena Cizkova, a.k.a. Drama. Now he is taking lessons from the world s premier assassin. I am not a murderer. It begins with a shocking betrayal, a brutal ambush, and the murder of a friend. Atticus is about to discover that he s been falsely identified as one of The Ten a short list of the world s most wanted assassins. And to survive, he s going to have to become exactly what they re accusing him of being: a stone cold killer. Yes, you are. You have only to meet your first victim…
.

Walking Dead

In this explosive new thriller, Greg Rucka, the acclaimed author of Shooting at Midnight and Patriot Acts, sets bodyguard turned international fugitive Atticus Kodiak on a one man crusade where being willing to die for your ideals isn t enough. You have to be willing to do much worse.

I will take your place in times of danger.

As an ex bodyguard, Atticus Kodiak knew the sentiment well. He d once based his career on it. Now it could cost him more than just his livelihood more than even his life. For as he wakes to the sound of gunfire, the nightmare is about to begin again.

Atticus knew very well that people came to a place like Kobuleti to hide. After all, that’s why he and Alena Cizkova had come to the secluded Georgian town in the former U.S.S.R. But Atticus never asked his friend and neighbor Bakhar Lagidze why he was in Kobuleti or what he might be hiding from. Now it s too late. Bakhar and his family have been brutally murdered, and the thuggish local police chief has declared it a murder suicide. Everyone even Alena seems satisfied to leave it at that.

Except for Atticus.

He knows what the police won t acknowledge: that one person survived the bloodbath in the Lagidze household their fourteen year old daughter. And the nightmare she s about to experience will make her wish she d died with the rest.

To rescue her Atticus must enter a web that takes him from Russia to Istanbul, that stretches from Dubai to Las Vegas. But what troubles Atticus the most is that Alena once one of the world s most dangerous assassins and a woman who fears nothing is clearly terrified of what he s uncovered. And as Atticus gets closer to learning why, the closer he gets to destroying the life they have made, and each other.

Operation: Broken Ground

As part of the Special Section of Britain’s Ministry of Intelligence, Tara Chace is one of a handful of operatives they call when they need to clean up a mess, or to make a new one. It’s a world of questionable morals. For instance, is it better to assassinate a general in the Russian mafia rather than allow him to peddle more guns and drugs in underprivileged countries? Tara’s bosses seem to think so. But the Russian mafia ask their own question once someone has taken the life of one of their officers, can they continue to let that person live? Greg Rucka peels back the lid on the traditional espionage story to see the nastiness inside, and Steve Rolston brings it to life with stunning clarity.

Operation: Morning Star (With: Brian Hurtt)

For Tara Chace and the Minders, Afghanistan has been a political hotspot for years. When the taleban regime discovers that some foreign journalists are also serving as covert-agents for the SIS, they round up all the reporters in Kabul to attempt to root out the spies. Moments before being taken into custody, David MacMillan stashes a list of United Front contacts in South Afghanistan in a secret hiding spot, keeping it out of the hands of the enemy. If the Minders don’t find it before the taleban, it means many more lives could be lost. When Director of Operations Paul Crocker decides to send only his male agents into the field, it doesn’t sit well with Tara, who would rather be in the action than sitting the mission out at home. Adding insult to injury, she is currently required to attend therapy sessions to deal with the effects of previous operations. Not content to sit on her hands, Tara spends her time trying to piece together the puzzle, aiding Minders Wallace and Kittering in their race against the clock. This second collection of the acclaimed series QUEEN & COUNTRY breaks new ground for comics, tackling tough subject matter in a realistic and intriguing way. Never has an espionage comic dealt so harshly with the realities of the world intelligence community and international politics.

Operation: Crystal Ball (With: Leandro Fernández)

Collecting issues 8 12 of the Eisner winning miniseries. Tara Chace races against the clock to stop a terrorist plot to unleash Sarin gas on the British citizenry all in the midst of a burgeoning romance between herself and fellow Minder Ed Kittering. Presented in both trade paperback and a special hardcover strictly limited to initial orders. Featuring an exclusive gallery section.

Operation: Blackwall (With: Jason Alexander)

British Intelligence operative Tara Chace is accustomed to working in the shadows cast by world governments, but when one of the Queen’s most affluent subjects is blackmailed by a French conglomerate trying to nab an important business contract, Tara’s espionage turns to the corporate variety. Little do the blackmailers know, the sex and lies they captured on videotape involved one of Chace’s school time friends, giving the agent extra incentive to foil the company and protect the interests of the Crown.

Operation: Stormfront (With: Carla Speed McNeil)

When an agent dies in the field, it’s their fellow spies that are always hit the hardest. When the agent that doesn’t make it home is an ex lover, ‘hard’ doesn’t begin to describe it. As Tara Chace and the rest of the department reel over the demise of one of their own, a ghost from Director Paul Crocker’s past has him sending his minders into danger yet again. But will this operation free Crocker from his ghosts or merely create new ones? Queen & Country: Operation: Stormfront is the latest volume in the award winning series of espionage and politics and sees creator Greg Rucka united with the Eisner nominated artist Carla Speed McNeil Finder.

Operation: Dandelion (With: Mike Hawthorne)

Every job has its office politics, but when you’re a spy in service to your queen and your country, the politics in play take on a much larger scale. When the chief of S.I.S. is forced into retirement by a stroke, Head of Operations Paul Crocker is forced to play a new game in order to keep his good standing and his job. But are agents Tara Chace and Tom Wallace prepared to be Crocker’s pawns in this new match? And how will it be for Poole, the new minder who has to step over two dead bodies in order to take his post?

Operation: Saddlebag (With: Mike Norton)

Still recovering from the death of her co worker and lover, Tara Chace is granted a brief reprieve from London’s rain and MI6’s bureaucracy. This emotionally charged vacation takes Chace to the slopes of Switzerland for a visit with old friends and family. But being an agent for Her Majesty’s Secret Intelligence Service leaves little time for rest. A junior minister with close ties to the Prime Minister appears to be selling state secrets to the Russians, and the Minders are assigned to quietly investigate. Tara is forced to walk a tight rope between the violent dangers inherent in the field of espionage and the discretion inherent in the bureaucracy of the government, all the while assuming the new position of Minder One and field testing a new agent. Operation: Saltlick takes the Special Section from the safety and comfort of Great Britain to the St. Petersburg underworld.

Operation: Red Panda (With: Chris Samnee)

Operation: Red Panda has the Minders being deployed to the war torn streets of Iraq to investigate and potentially ‘terminate’ an Iraqi bureaucrat who is suspected of giving allied secrets to local insurgents. As the old saying goes, all plans goes out the window once the first bullet is fired. And when things go from bad to worse for Tara, years of trauma and abuse come violently forward.

A Gentleman’s Game

Tara Chace may be the most dangerous woman alive. She can seduce you into believing she’s the woman of your dreams or kill you with the icy efficiency of an executioner. As the new head of Special Operations for British Intelligence, she no longer has to court death in the field she wants to. Throw away the old rules, the old school, the old boy network. The world of international espionage is about to learn the hard way that spying is no longer merely A Gentleman’s GameGreg Rucka s electrifying thrillers have pushed the boundaries of suspense fiction to where few have dared to go. Now, in A Gentleman s Game, one of the genre s most fearless writers brings readers of international espionage his most fearless hero*ine yet: a no holds barred woman who s as lethal as an assassin s bullet. When an unthinkable act of terror devastates London, nothing will stop Tara Chace from hunting down those responsible. Her job is simple: stop the terrorists before they strike a second time. To succeed, she ll do anything and everything it takes. She ll have to kill again. Only this time the personal stakes will be higher than ever before. For the terrorist counterstrike will require that Tara allow herself to be used as bait by the government she serves. This time she s turning her very life into a weapon that can be used only once. But as she and her former mentor race toward destiny at a remote terrorist training camp in Saudi Arabia, Tara begins to question just who s pulling the trigger and who s the real enemy. In this new kind of war, betrayal can take any form…
including one s duty to queen and country. Based on the graphic novel series that won the coveted Eisner Award, A Gentleman s Game is an electrifyingly realistic, headline stealing thriller with an unforgettable protagonist one who redefines every rule she doesn t shatter.

Private Wars

Only Greg Rucka, the thriller genre’s most fearless writer, would dare create a spy so edgy, so explosive, so extreme, she should be rated X.

Tara Chace was once the most dangerous woman alive. And now that the international spy network thinks she’s as good as dead, she’s even more dangerous than ever.

Only one thing could coax Tara back into the game: a chance to vindicate herself. The torture and execution of Dina Malikov has set off a cutthroat grab for power in strategically crucial Uzbekistan. Tara’s job is to slip into the country and extract Dina’s pro-Western husband and their young son before they are murdered-by his ruthless sister.

But there are a couple of wild cards in the deck, including a missing mobile weapons system that can bring down a commercial airliner, not to mention powerful political careers. Now, as she vanishes into hostile territory with a man who may or may not be what he seems, Tara is going to find out that the war on terror is more terrifying than anyone knows. For in a battle where betrayal is a conventional weapon, loyalty is a weakness, and anyone-even a child-is a legitimate target: it’s every spy, every woman, for herself.

Combine a thriller that defies every expectation with a hero*ine for whom nothing is out of bounds, and the result is Private Wars, a suspense novel so explosively realistic, it should be classified.

The Last Run

The game of espionage catches up to everyone in the end. Now, in Greg Rucka’s sensational new Queen & Country thriller, the world s most lethal woman embarks on one final and all too likely fatal mission. For nearly a decade Tara Chace has been Britain s top covert agent. But Chace is past her expiration date. Her body hurts. Her nerves are scrambled. She s ready for a desk job, the quiet role of mentor to a new generation of special operations officers. But before her replacement can be chosen, there s one last job for Queen and country…
and it may be the last thing she does. Ever. The assignment begins with an enigmatic message from Iran a message made all the more perplexing not just by its cryptic code but by its apparent dispatcher. But what if the long dormant cipher is a trap meant to entice Iran s enemies into the open? There s only one way to find out and only one agent who can do it: Tara Chace. Soon Chace is on the ground in Tehran leading an extraction team toward a high profile defector. But obtaining him is one thing, getting him out of the country will be another. For with the likelihood of a double cross at every turn, Chace knows that chaos can erupt in a heartbeat. And when it does, it s far worse than even she expects. Now, if she s to have a future, Chace must survive any way she can. And that means one thing hasn t changed: Tara Chace is never the hunted. She s always the hunter.

Secrets of New Orleans (By:Fred Van Lente)

New Orleans in the 1920’s is a city of many faces. The gaiety of Mardi Gras is juxtaposed with the rampant corruption that earned New Orleans the nickname The City That Care Forgot. The genteel decline of the French Quarter, the location of the city s original settlement, stands in contrast to the rich opulence of the Garden District, where the Americans later built their mansions. Voodoo and Catholicism exist peacefully side by side. And beneath it all, the face of the Mythos can sometimes be glimpsed…
. This guidebook includes detailed chapters on: the history of New Orleans, the French Quarter and the greater city, and the bayous and coastal area. A chapter on voodoo includes guidelines for integrating it into Call of Cthulhu. New occupations unique to the Crescent City and the area are suggested, and five secret societies are covered. A scenario designed to acquaint investigators with most of New Orleans areas completes the book.

Secrets of San Francisco: A 1920s Sourcebook for the City by the Bay (By:)

A 1920s Sourcebook for the City by the Bay

In all of North America there is no more perfect intersection of climate, culture, and colorful history than San Francisco – the culmination of Manifest Destiny, the Golden Gate to the Pacific Ocean, and the treasure house of the wealth of the great California Gold Rush. Purged of her wild, anarchic past by a devastating earthquake and fire at the beginning of the twentieth century, San Francisco has emerged as the most cosmopolitan city on the West Coast.

San Francisco is deceptively ancient; its history shrouded in a fog of false domesticity. The Bay Area has known many masters, each leaving a distinctive mark upon the land. As San Francisco blossoms it attracts fugitives and practitioners of unorthodox faiths from across the world. Tales of the region assume mythic proportions as it becomes the most ethnically diverse, and most lawless, place in America.

SECRETS OF SAN FRANCISCO provides excellent background for a Call of Cthulhu campaign set in the Bay Area of the 1920s. It includes urban geography, civic history, research venues, and mythos lore. Many period photographs are provided and dozens of historical figures are introduced, including several who collaborated and corresponded with Lovecraft. Here are provided descriptions of where San Franciscan’s are sent when they break the law, go insane, or pass-beyond. Here are the sights, sounds, and secrets of this place that makes it a unique city.

A Fistful of Rain

Greg Rucka has earned the kind of reputation that all thriller writers envy: his crime fiction grabs readers by the throat and compels them to read as if their own lives were at stake. Now, in an electrifying departure, Rucka creates a new kind of hero: a damaged young woman in free fall who’s not only in danger but dangerous.A Fistful of RainMim Bracca is riding the fast lane straight off the end of the world. Now she s coming home without a job, without a future, and without a prayer and only one last chance to get her feet under her, or go down forever. But home has its own terrors, including a past Mim has done everything possible to leave behind. Now that past is coming back with the shocking speed and deadly intent of a sniper s bullet, aimed to destroy her once and for all. When Mim suffers her first blackout, waking up dazed and bloodied, she s certain she s hit rock bottom. She s wrong. She s only just begun to fall. The photos are invasive, obscene, and all over the Internet for anyone to see. How they got there, where and when they were shot, and by whom, Mim has no idea. And before the investigation into the matter even begins, a brutal murder makes it clear that whatever Mim thinks her life has been up to now, she s about to learn it s all a lie. The kind of lie that will kill. Written with stunning originality, A Fistful of Rain crosses the line separating the guilty from the innocent as it takes us on a breakneck ride of deceit and double cross and quite possibly the last twenty four hours in Mim Bracca s stormy life.

Gotham now teeters at the edge of the abyss…

Batman: No Man’s Land – Volume 3 (By:Sergio Cariello)

Fans of Batman are lucky to get Greg Rucka the talented, gritty young author of Keeper and Finder, among others sharing time with their favorite licensed character in this novelization of DC’s complete No Man’s Land comic series. And fans of Rucka assuming they get around to reading this at all will still likely hold the opinion that Atticus Kodiak could take Batman in a standup fight any day. DC shook up Gotham literally in its 1999 Batman plot arc: a 7.6 earthquake rocked Gotham City, wreaking enough destruction to bring the broken, crime ridden, runt kid brother of Metropolis and New York to its knees. In the story line’s most indulgent liberty, those fat cats in Washington decide to write off Gotham, la Escape from New York, blowing up the connecting bridges, mining the surrounding waterways, and signing into law the Federal Declaration of No Man’s Land, which makes it a crime to even set foot in the city. The usual suspects from Arkham Asylum, Two Face and the Penguin, the Riddler and Dr. Freeze, Poison Ivy and Mr. Zsasz, file out to begin running the show, strong arming and manipulating the block by block turf battles that envelop the now ultraviolent city. A conflicted Batman shows up fashionably late, only to find that these lunatics are the least of his worries: Lex Luthor, Superman’s archfoe, has nefarious designs on Gotham too. Could this possibly get any better? Sure, No Man’s Land is derivative fiction, but the appeal of Rucka and, of course, Batman can make this one worth the read. Paul Hughes
