Terry Jones Books Overview

The Knight and the Squire

In a small village in 14th century England, a bright young boy named Tom is restless. Tired of studying and digging ditches, he dreams of noble crusades in far off lands. He decides that he must have his freedom and flees to the forest to elude pursuers. There he meets the terrifying Wolfman, who becomes an unexpected friend. Throughout his eventful journey, Tom encounters a colorful assortment of characters, but none more lively than Alan, who leads them both to France to fight for king and country. With its non stop adventure and marvelous humor, readers will be turning the pages as quickly as they can to follow Tom and Alan through ambush and skirmish, battle and siege. Terry Jones, a former member of the legendary Monty Python group, is also the author of Nicobobinus and Fairy Tales and Fantastic Stories. Michael Foreman is the award winning illustrator of numerous books, including Farm Boy, War Boy, and The Little Ships.

The Saga of Erik the Viking

‘This is the tale of a Viking warrior who lived hundreds and hundreds of years ago. His name was Erik. His ship was called Golden Dragon, and its figurehead was a fierce monster carved out of wood and covered with gold.’ So begins this lively series of adventures from master storyteller Terry Jones. Drawn from the most thrilling Nordic Sagas, Erik the Viking tells of a hero and his brave band of men who set sail in search of a new land. The wicked treachery of the Old Man of the Sea, the beguiling evil of the Enchantress of the Fjord, the ruthless and cold blooded fury of the Dogfighters are but a few of their gripping encounters. Each chapter forms a complete story, while the mythical landscape is vividly depicted by Michael Foreman. Terry Jones is perhaps best known as a former member of Monty Python. His Fairy Tales and Fantastic Stories won Britain’s coveted Smarties Prize. Michael Foreman is a widely acclaimed children’s book illustrator.

Nicobobinus

Nicobobinus and his friend Rosie go in search of the Land of Dragons and find more adventure than they’d bargained for.

Starship Titanic

In this thoroughly satisfying and completely disorienting novel based on a story line by Douglas Adams author of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Terry Jones recounts an unforgettable tale of intergalactic travel and mishap. The saga of ‘the ship that cannot possibly go wrong’ sparkles with wit, danger, and confusion that will keep readers guessing which reality they are in and how, on earth, to find their way out again. At the center of the galaxy, a vast, unknown civilization is preparing for an event of epic proportions: the launching of the greatest, most gorgeous, most technologically advanced Starship ever built the Starship Titanic. An earthling would see it as a mixture of the Chrysler Building, the tomb of Tutankhamen, and Venice. But less provincial onlookers would recognize it as the design of Leovinus, the galaxy’s most renowned architect. He is an old man now, and the creation of the Starship Titanic is the pinnacle achievement of his twenty year career. The night before the launch, Leovinus is prowling around the ship having a last little look. With mounting alarm he begins to find things are not right: unfinished workmanship, cybersystems not working correctly, robots colliding with doors. How could this have happened? And how could this have happened without his knowing?Something somewhere is terribly wrong. On the following day, in an artificial event staged for the media, the Starship Titanic will leave its construction dock under autopilot and, a few days later, make its way to the terminal to pick up passengers for its maiden voyage. Although the ship will be deserted during its very first flight, it is nevertheless a major event, watched by all the galaxy’s media. Hugely, magnificently, the fabulous ship eases its way forward from the construction dock, picks up speed, sways a bit, wobbles a bit, veers wildly, and just before it can do massive damage to everything around it, appears to undergo SMEF Spontaneous Massive Existence Failure. In just ten seconds, the whole, stupendous enterprise is over. And our story has just begun. Somehow three earthlings, one Blerontin journalist, a semideranged parrot, and a shipful of disoriented robots must overcome their differences. It’s the only way to save the Starship Titanic ‘The Ship That Cannot Possibly Go Wrong’ from certain destruction and rescue the economy of an entire planet not to mention to survive the latest threat, an attack by a swarm of hostile shipbuilders…

The Goblins of Labyrinth

In 1986, the magical fantasy movie Labyrinth introduced the world to a set of unforgettable goblins from the minds of Jim Henson and Brian Froud. Not only has the film become a classic with a huge cult following, but Brian Froud’s long out of print book about the malevolent and cantankerous goblins packed with his brilliant drawings and paintings has achieved similar cult status. Now Abrams is proudly reissuing The Goblins of Labyrinth in a brand new 20th Anniversary Edition. With even more artwork than the original and a new afterword from Brian Froud, this mesmerizing work, like Froud s The World of The Dark Crystal, is a must have for collectors and Brian Froud fans everywhere.

The Fantastic World of Terry Jones: Fantastic Stories

Audio Cassette, Orion Children’s Books

Lady Cottington’s Pressed Fairy Book

This is a reproduction of the diary of Lady Angelica Cottingham, which features pressed garden fairies. Or rather the psychic images of the fairies, who quickly turned it into a game, where they leapt between the closing pages in an effort to outdo each other to produce the most outrageous poses. The book claims to be the facsimile edition of the notebook of Lady Cottington who, it is said, took the infamous photograph of a group of fairies that was authenticated by Conan Doyle, but later discredited. She was determined to prove the existence of fairies and began to capture them between the pages of her notebook, in which she had previously pressed wild flowers. This is a record of the fairies she caught, and of the disruptive influence they had on her otherwise sheltered life.

The Goblin Companion

Earthy, enigmatic, and until now elusive, the goblin is little known and even less well understood. Thanks to Brian Froud’s discovery of the notebooks of Dashe, a goblin portraitist, this rare breed is now an open book. This is a definitive, profusely illustrated field guide to the goblin world, annotated by Terry Jones, Monty Python professor emeritus of Obscure, Absurd and Truly Hilarious Arts. Full color illustrations.

Strange Stains and Mysterious Smells

The former member of Monty Python’s Flying Circus presents a journal of fairy research by Quentin Cottingham that attempts to analyze the protoplasmic nature of fairy stains.

Fairy Tales and Fantastic Stories

How slow is an ogre? How do you get rid of a dragon if it’s on your roof? Would you go off with a fly by night? And who was the funniest dog in the world? These are a few of the important questions that are answered in this book. Terry Jones s fairy tales take readers to strange lands and fabulous kingdoms where they will find mystery and magic, sadness and silliness, and more adventures than they will know what to do with.

Bedtime Stories

This enchanting book gathers the favorite tales of master storytellers Terry Jones and Nanette Newman, all brought to life in the magical watercolors of Michael Foreman. A boastful herring, a flying tiger, a cat called Spider, a rather unconventional bear, and a beast with a thousand teeth all these and more are waiting to whisk you away in this delightfully different collection of Bedtime Stories. Terry Jones is best known as a writer and member of Monty Python. His books for children include Fairy Tales and Fantastic Stories and The Knight and the Squire. Actress and children’s writer Nanette Newman is the author of My Granny and Ben’s Book. Michael Foreman is the popular author illustrator of books like Cat and Canary, Little Albatross, and Toro! Toro! He is also the winner of the Smarties Prize and two Kate Greenaway Medals.

The Complete Monty Python’s Flying Circus Vol 1

Perhaps the ultimate in TV comedy madness and absurdity, this cult series, which began in 1969, was conceived, written and performed by Graham Chapman, Eric Idle, Michael Palin, Terry Gilliam, and Terry Jones. Its innovative and ground breaking comedy inspired many of today’s writers and performers. Its sketches, songs, and catchphrases are legendary, and this ‘best of’ disc features: the dead parrot, the Ministry of Silly Walks, The Lumberjack Song, And Now for Something Completely Different, and many more. Presented on 1 CD, starring Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, and Michael Palin.

The Crusades

In 1095, Pope Urban II called upon Christians to march under the banner of the Cross and save their brothers in the East from the advance of Islam. This vision of crusading Christianity dominated the events of the next two centuries and brought together people of all ages and backgrounds, sworn to spread Christianity and wrest the Holy Land from the Infidel. First published to accompany the acclaimed BBC television series, ‘Crusades’ tells the compelling, often horrific, story of the fanatics and fantasists, knights and peasants who were caught up in these fervent times. It reveals how Muslims, Jews and Christians were massacred, and how The Crusades sowed the seeds of ‘jihad’, the holy war for Islam, a legacy that endures today.

The Fairly Incomplete and Rather Badly Illustrated Monty Python Songbook

From ‘The Lumberjack Song’ to ‘Always Look on the Bright Side of Life,’ the Songbook collects the cream of the Python team’s musical output, from the four TV series and the various feature films. Includes the original songs from The Holy Grail, basis for the musical Spamalot. Arranged with music for the piano and accompanied by Terry Gilliam’s incomparable cartoons.

The Pythons’ Autobiography By The Pythons

Over thirty years ago, a group of five Englishmen and one wayward American, re wrote the rules of comedy. Monty Python’s Flying Circus, an unheralded, previously unseen and practically unprogrammed half hour of sketches, hilarities, inanities and animations first appeared on the BBC late one night in 1969. Its impact on the world has been felt ever since. From its humble beginnings as late night entertainment on a British TV channel that went off the air before midnight, it blossomed into arguably the most influential movement in modern comedy. They found the Holy Grail, they detailed the life of the Savior also ran Brian, and when we were lost, they explained The Meaning of Life. Now, those purveyors of dead parrots and silly walks are going to tell us something more: Their story. In their own, intimate, never before heard words. The Pythons by The Pythons is the definitive word on all things Pythonesque the only word invented by a modern comedian which is listed in the Oxford English Dictionary. 30 years of insight, hindsight, and bad sight now told for the first time. Stuff they’re never remembered before alongside stories they’d forgotten to say, coupled with things they couldn’t say then and even more things they can’t pronounce now with a healthy dollop of things they would never have said in the first place if any others had been in the room at the time. The Pythons by The Pythons is a unique look at arguably the most important comic team of the modern age, lavishly illustrated with 1000 photographs and illustrations, many culled from the teams’ own personal collections, many seen here for the first time. A tome, a tombstone, the definitive word on all things Python, as told by all things Python do you want Spam with that?

Who Murdered Chaucer?

In this spectacular work of historical speculation Terry Jones investigates the mystery surrounding the death of Geoffrey Chaucer over 600 years ago. A diplomat and brother in law to John of Gaunt, one of the most powerful men in the kingdom, Chaucer was celebrated as his country’s finest living poet, rhetorician and scholar: the preeminent intellectual of his time. And yet nothing is known of his death. In 1400 his name simply disappears from the record. We don’t know how he died, where or when; there is no official confirmation of his death and no chronicle mentions it; no notice of his funeral or burial. He left no will and there’s nothing to tell us what happened to his estate. He didn’t even leave any manuscripts. How could this be? What if he was murdered? Terry Jones’ hypothesis is the introduction to a reading of Chaucer’s writings as evidence that might be held against him, interwoven with a portrait of one of the most turbulent periods in English history, its politics and its personalities.

Terry Jones’ Medieval Lives

Famous for lampooning the medieval world in Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Terry Jones has a real passion for and detailed knowledge of the Middle Ages. In Terry Jones’ Medieval Lives, his mission is to rescue the Middle Ages from moth eaten cliches and well worn platitudes. Behind the stereotypes of ‘damsels in distress’ and ‘knights in shining armor,’ there are wonderfully human stories that bring the period to life. Terry will start with the medieval archetypes the Knight, Peasant, Damsel, Monk, Outlaw, King, Merchant, and Physician and in the course of unravelling their role and function will introduce a host of colorful real life characters, recreating their world by visiting key locations.

Terry Jones’s War on the War on Terror

Terry Jones is known the world over as one of the beloved creators of the legendary Monty Python. But independent of the Python team, Jones has been writing columns targeting the Anglo American response to September 11. His wit and venom are particularly focused on the messianic vernacular of Bush and Blair and the semantics of the ‘war on terror.’ As Jones writes, ‘What really alarms me about President Bush’s War on Terrorism is the grammar. How do you wage war on an abstract noun?…
How is Terrorism going to surrender? It s well known, in philological circles, that it s very hard for abstract nouns to surrender.’ Terry Jones s War on the War on Terror proves that in times of high political anxiety, humor and irony are most potent antidotes to the spin emanating from the White House and Downing Street.

Terry Jones’ Barbarians

Renowned as a member of Monty Python, Terry Jones also proved himself to be an unorthodox connoisseur of history with Terry Jones Medieval Lives. Now, Professor Jones shows us once again that history can be fun. Terry Jones Barbarians takes a completely fresh approach to Roman history. No one nowadays would try to tell the story of the British Empire from the point of view of the British, but the story of the Roman Empire is still always told from the perspective of Rome. Well, not any more! This is the story of the Roman Empire as seen by the Britons, Gauls, Germans, Hellenes, Persians, and Africans. And suddenly, the Romans don t look all that familiar. In place of the propaganda pushed on us by the Romans, we ll see these people as they really were. The Vandals didn t vandalize the Romans did. The Goths didn t sack Rome the Romans did. Traversing the landscape of the Roman Empire, Terry Jones brings wit, irreverence, and the very latest scholarship to transform a history that seemed well past its sell date. Terry Jones is most famous as a member of Monty Python; he has also directed a number of feature films, including Monty Python and the Holy Grail and The Life of Brian. Alan Ereira is an award winning television producer and writer.
