The House on the Borderland

The story of an adventure in time and space that spans all of creation. A building, constructed across an invisible chasm of space time, fated to witness the very end of the world, is waiting with open doors for anyone who dares to enter it. /Content /EditorialReview EditorialReview Source Amazon. com Review /Source Content This classic novel of the weird supernatural, first published in 1908, was an important influence on H. P. Lovecraft. In the ruins of an ancient stone house in Ireland is found the diary of an elderly man who lived alone with his sister and their pets, and who longed for his lost love. The diary tells of how the man explores a cyclopean cavern beneath the house and fights off swarms of white pig like monsters pouring up from below. Then, in a visionary sequence, he breaks through to an alternate space time dimension and sees a doppelganger of his house on a vast desolate plain. The prose is hokey at times, but the strange mood evoked by the other dimensional setting is powerful indeed. As acclaimed horror writer T. E. D. Klein says, ‘Never has a book so hauntingly conveyed a sense of terrible loneliness and isolation.’

The Night Land

The Night Land is a classic horror novel by William Hope Hodgson, first published in 1912. As a work of fantasy it belongs to the Dying Earth subgenre. H. P. Lovecraft’s described the novel as ‘one of the most potent pieces of macabre imagination ever written’. According to critical consensus, in this work, despite his often laboured and clumsy language, Hodgson achieves a deep power of expression, which focuses on a sense not only of terror but of the ubiquity of potential terror, of the thinness of the invisible bound between the world of normality and an underlying reality for which humans are not suited.

From the Tideless Sea

He slit up the oilskin as be spoke. Underneath, there was another covering of the same material, and under that a third. Then a longish bundle done up in tarred canvas. This was removed, and a black, cylindrical shaped case disclosed to view. It proved to be a tin canister, pitched over. Inside of it, neatly wrapped within a last strip of oilskin, was a roll of papers, which, on opening, the Captain found to be covered with writing. The Captain shook out the various wrappings; but found nothing further. He handed the MS. across to Jock.

Sea-Horses

Each time the boat went ashore, it brought sad news, that first this and then that one had gone the Long Road; but it was chiefly the children that interested Nebby. Each time that his Granfer came up out of the depths, Nebby would dance round him impatiently, until the big helmet was unscrewed; then would come his inevitable, eager question:…

Gothic Horror 1

Gothic Horror 1 brings together in one volume the first two books of William Hope Hodgson’s ‘Trilogy’ which was an important influence on H.P. Lovecraft. Fast paced adventure combines with the supernatural to create ‘The Boats of Glen Garrig.’ Events unfold with a vivid believability that could only come from an author who has had first hand experience with danger. Hodgson’s early career at sea allows him to write with authority and create an atmosphere of such authenticity that when the malignant forces begin to intrude, they are all the more convincing. ‘The House on the Borderland’ is an ancient and crumbling estate, overrun by wild gardens. There resides a man who has a most unusual story to tell a story that blends horror, fantasy, and science fiction. As a beautifully written work of pure imagination, Hodgson’s work has few equals, and has been compared to the writings of Poe, Machen, and Blackwood. As acclaimed horror writer T. E. D. Klein says, ‘Never has a book so hauntingly conveyed a sense of terrible loneliness and isolation.’ Hodgson’s Trilogy concludes in Gothic Horror 2 which features ‘The Ghost Pirates’ and also includes the chilling account of ‘Carnacki The Ghost Finder.’ Enjoy a wild ride into the supernatural!

Adrift on the Haunted Seas

William Hope Hodgson 1877 1918 is acknowledged as one of the undisputed masters of the sea story. This is the first time a collection of his finest short stories have been brought together in one volume. Hodgson’s sea stories have an unusual authenticity, owing to his having spent eight years at sea, where the experience of mistreatment, poor conditions, and worse food was only abated by his immeasurable fascination with the sea and all its glory. This unique collection will bring readers face to face with some of the most exciting and dramatic sea tales ever put to paper from fantastic and terrible creatures to the ever changing mood of the powerful seas.

The Derelict

‘Yes, doctor, in a way, you are,’ I said. ‘But I don’t agree with you, though I think I understand you. Electricity and fire are both what I might call natural things, but life is an abstract something a kind of all permeating wakefulness. Oh, I can’t explain it! Who could?

The Finding of the Graiken

Just at the going down of the sun, I saw another; she was nearer, and still possessed two of her masts, which stuck up bare and desolate into the darkening sky. She could not have been more than a quarter of a mile in from the edge of the weed. As we passed her I craned out my head through the port to stare at her. As I stared the dusk grew out of the abyss of the air, and she faded presently from sight into the surrounding loneliness.
