Hugh Cook Books Overview

The Wizards and the Warriors

The Confederation of Wizards is forced to put aside its long standing historical dispute with the inhabitants of Rovac. Instead, both must join together in a common cause, to prevent the utter destruction of their world. They face two perils: the Swarms, and a power that turns living things to stone and brings rocks to life. ”Cook writes with grace, vividness, and a fair amount of wit.” Booklist. ”A nonstop fantasy adventure…
recommended for fantasy collections.” Library Journal. ”This first volume…
proclaims a talent worth watching.” Publishers Weekly.

The Wordsmiths and the Warguild

Togura Poulaan, a questing hero whether he liked it or not, is precipitated into a series of adventures in a world which includes dragons, sea serpents, war, wild tribes and the wizard Hostaja Sken Pitilkin, lord of the island of Drum. A fast paced fantasy novel published in the USA as two volumes, THE QUESTING HERO and THE HERO’S RETURN.

The Women and the Warlords

Enhances this fantasy epic collection with swift action, a well developed world in which an oracle becomes involved in superpower warlord battles for control, and characterization which is realistic.” The Bookwatch. ”Considers the plight of an intelligent single woman who, as an oracle, enjoys neither a fixed role nor a class niche…
Cook’s picaresque plot yields abundant adventure, baroque inventions along with a darkly comic edge and, along the way, a measure of rueful insight.” Publishers Weekly.

The Walrus and the Warwolf

On his 16th birthday, churlish Drake Douay finds himself exiled from his homeland amid a treacherous crew of pirates on the open sea. Through battles with sea monsters, mysterious cults, weird technology of a bygone age, and the warring gangs of two pirate lords, Drake explores a world of dark fantasy and betrayal with his keen wit and a sharp sword his only protection from an early death! Never before published in a North American edition, The Walrus & The Warwolf is the most popular of Hugh Cook’s 10 volume Chronicles of an Age of Darkness series, which blends fierce sword & sorcery action with vivid world building to create a modern classic of fantasy. Author China Mieville Perdido St. Station, The Scar provides an insightful, amusing introduction to Cook’s unforgettable book.

The Worshippers and the Way

In the city of Dalar ken Halvar, two warrior, Asodo Hatch and Lupus Lon Oliver, battle for supremacy in virtual reality arenas. The outcome of their struggle will be the key to the outcome of a struggle taking place in the city in the world of the fact and the flesh. This is military SF, much of the action set in the Combat College.

To Find and Wake the Dreamer

A fast moving fantasy novel, a no holds barred novel written on an adult level, about the war on terror. In the city state of Oolong Morblock, where a certain proportion of the people have a natural ability to cause themselves to explode, in effect making them potential suicide bombers, Ibrahim Chess tries to find the middle road: to steer a course of moderation and sanity in a world which is going mad, and where the civil peace is threatened by the increasingly intolerant fanaticism of the conflict between the minority group to which Ibrahim belongs, the astrals, and the city state’s dominant group, the norms. Note: this book contains some disturbing scenes. If you do not find something in this book to disturb you then you are a seriously disturbed person. Are you a person of exquisite good taste? Then, sorry, but you are disqualified as a reader. This book pretty much takes the attitude that boundaries especially boundaries of taste are there to be breached. You have been warned!
