Mike Resnick Books Overview

Kirinyaga

Hailed for his grandeur of imagination and superb worldbuilding, winner of and nominee for more than fifty awards for his outstanding work, Mike Resnick has rightfully won a place as one of science fiction’s master storytellers. Now, in Kirinyaga, Resnick presents the haunting and utterly compelling tale of one man’s utopia. By the twentieth second century in the African nation of Kenya, polluted cities sprawl up the flanks of sacred Mount Kirinyaga. Great animal herds are but distant memories. European crops now grow on the sweeping savannas. But Koriba, a distinguished, educated man of Kikuyu ancestry, knows that life was different for his people centuries ago and he is determined to build a utopian colony, not on earth, but on the terraformed planetoid he proudly names Kirinyaga. As the mundumugu witch doctor Koriba leads the colonists. Reinstating the ancient customs and stringent laws of the Kikuyu people, he alone decides their fate. He must face many challenges to the struggling colony’s survival: from a brilliant young girl whose radiant intellect could threaten their traditional ways to the interference of ‘Maintenance’ which holds the power to revoke the colony’s charter. All the while, only Koriba unbeknownst to his people maintains the computer link to the rest of humanity. Ironically, the Kirinyaga experiment threatens to collapse not from violence or greed but from humankind’s insatiable desire for knowledge. The Kikuyu people can no more stand still in time than their planet can stop revolving around its sun. Deeply moving, swiftly paced, and profound in its implications, Kirinyaga is Mike Resnick’s most triumphant work to date. His Fable of Utopia is the book every science fiction reader will want to own and savor for years to come. From the Hardcover edition.

Kilimanjaro

Ten years after the publication of Kirinyaga, the most awarded science fiction book in history, comes this companion novella by 5 time Hugo winner Mike Resnick. The Kikuyu tribe of East Africa attempted to create a Utopia on the terraformed planetoid Kirinyaga, which was named for the mountain where their god lives. Things went wrong. Now, a century later, the Maasai tribe has studied Kirinyaga’s history, has analyzed their mistakes, and is ready to create a Maasai Utopia on the planetoid Kilimanjaro, named for the mountain where their god lives. This is the story of that experiment.

Lady with an Alien

– Sci-fi author Mike Resnick has won more awards than Ray Bradbury or Isaac Asimov

– Leonardo da Vinci, star of the best-selling The Da Vinci Code, is hot

– Time travel, adventure, humor-Lady with an Alien is an Art Encounters tour de force!

Lady with an Ermine, Leonardo da Vinci’s portrait of a patron’s mistress holding the symbol of her lover’s family, is perhaps his most beautiful painting. But…is that what ermines really look like? Mike Resnick, the author of Hugo Award winners Kirinyaga and Seven Views of Olduvai Gorge, presents an exciting reimagining of this great painting in his first-ever book for young adults. The time-traveling hero, Mario Ravelli, develops a unique friendship with Leonardo da Vinci during a vacation from 2523 A.D. The story of how Mario’s pet becomes the lady’s ermine makes for an intriguing, entertaining journey to Renaissance Italy, and gives a unique look at the work and the creative process of a great master.

From the Hardcover edition.

A Club in Montmartre

Award winning author Mike Resnick weaves a story of despair and hope in Montmartre Author’s first story outside the science fiction genre Compelling story of overcoming obstacles At the cabarets and brothels of Montmartre, Henri de Toulouse Lautrec is a well known visitor. Brilliant, rich, and deformed, Toulouse Lautrec carries on flirtations and relationships with many women prostitutes as well as famous singers and dancers. In A Club in Montmartre, renowned writer Mike Resnick imagines the lonely artist meeting a starving waif, Dany, at the famous Moulin Rouge. Dany, like so many before her, falls under the spell of the dissolute can can dancer known as La Goulue. Toulouse Lautrec wages a Faustian battle with La Goulue for the young girl s soul even as he is losing the battle for his own, slipping deeper and deeper into alcoholism and bitterness. This deeply felt story, Resnick s first in a genre other than science fiction, captures the intensity of a genius caught between his limitations and his aspirations.

World Behind the Door

Salvador Dali’s The Persistence of Memory is one of the most memorable images in the world. Everyone who sees this painting wonders: What does it mean? Now the surrealist masterpiece is at the center of a compelling science fiction story from world renowned author Mike Resnick. Resnick s first entry in the Art Encounters series, Lady with an Alien: An Encounter with Leonardo da Vinci, was named a Best Book of the Year by the Columbus Dispatch and was called ‘a most successful encounter!’ by Kliatt. Now his remarkable new tale reveals the connection between Dali s celebrated painting and quantum physics…
because, it turns out, Dali often traveled to an alternate universe, where he got a lot of his ideas from a young girl named Jinx. Meet Jinx in World Behind the Door, along with Sigmund Freud, Werner Heisenberg, and other historical characters, and discover the shadowy, strange world where all the clocks look like they re melting.

Birthright

An epic novel of human expansion across the stars. Birthright: The Book of Man is Mike Resnick’s masterful contribution to the science fiction genre’s sweeping galactic legacy that began with Asimov’s Foundation series.
Locus Poll Award Nominee

Ivory

In the year 6303, when earth is bare of anything larger than an insect or a mouse and most people have left for the stars, Duncan Rojas receives a most unusual visitor. His name is Bukoba Mandaka, and he is the last of the Maasai. Mandaka wants Rojas, senior researcher for Braxton’s Records of Big Game, to find the tusks of the Kilimanjaro Elephant, tusks that weigh over 200 lb. each. Why? Mandaka will not say, but he will pay enormous sums for them. And Rojas cannot resist the challenge of tracing something lost for 3000 years. Back and forth through time, in card games, wars, and rivalries, Rojas searches. But as he begins to glimpse the elusive, lost power of ancient Africa, he is seduced, and before long the quest has become his own. With ‘Ivory‘, Mike Resnick has created a powerful novel spanning worlds and centuries, an exploration of the nature of history and legend, and a riveting parable for our times.

A Hunger in the Soul

Dr. Michael Drake, a great medical researcher, chose to disappear into the jungles of the world called Bushveld. But now the human settled Galaxy needs him to combat a new plague. Journalist adventurer Robert Markham has determined to locate Drake and bring him back to civilization whether he wants to come or not. Award winning author Mike Resnick takes us on a new journey across alien landscapes in this powerful quest adventure.

The Outpost

Award winning writer Mike Resnick takes us back to his wild and wooly Inner Frontier in this tall tale of an adventure novel. On the planet Henry II, orbiting the twin suns of Plantagenet and Tudor, at the very edge of the great black hole at the center of the Milky Way, there is a tavern called The Outpost. Through the doors of The Outpost have come the greatest heroes, villains, and adventurers of the galaxy to drink, to brag, and to swap tales. The Outpost is neutral territory where fighting is forbidden and blood enemies can have a drink together and tell stories of battles past. After all bounty hunters, con men, itinerant preachers, thieves, and assassins have more in common with each other than they do with the rest of the mundane galaxy. But their pleasant life of recalling murder and mayhem is interrupted by an alien invasion, and to save their way of life these rugged individualists must try to work together for a change.

As he cheerlessly reflects on the passing of a lousy year, which saw his business partner run off with his wife, he assumes the bourbon is responsible for the appearance of a belligerent elf. This elf informs him that he needs the detective’s help in searching for a unicorn that was stolen from his charge. When Mallory realises the little green fellow is not going to disappear with the passing of his inebriation, he listens to the elf’s impassioned plea that the stolen magical beast must be returned to his care by daylight or his little green life will be forfeited by the elves’ guild. Stalking the Vampire

It’s Halloween, and John Justin Mallory’s partner, Winnifred Carruthers, has been so busy preparing for the biggest holiday of the year in this Manhattan, anyway that she seems short of energy and pale. Mallory is worried that she’s been working too hard. Then he notices the two puncture marks on her neck…
On this night when ghosts and goblins are out celebrating, detective Mallory must stalk the vampire who has threatened his partner and killed her nephew. With the aid of Felina, the cat girl, Mallory and Carruthers investigate clubs and lairs that only seem to exist on this one night of the year. His hunt takes him to Creepy Conrad’s Cut Rate All Night Mortuary, where he questions the living and the dead; to the Annual Zombies’ Ball, to learn more about the undead; to the Hills of Home Cemetery, where the vampire sleeps by day; and to Battery Park, where all of Manhattan’s bats come to feed and sleep. Along the way he meets a few old friends and enemies, and a host of strange new inhabitants of this otherworldly Manhattan. Locked in an intriguing battle of wits with the millennia old vampire, Mallory has until dawn if he is to save his trusted partner.

Stalking the Dragon

It is Valentine’s Day and private detective John Justin Mallory is planning on closing up the office early and taking his partner, Colonel Winnifred Carruthers, out to dinner, since he’s sure no one else will do so. But before he can turn off the lights and lock the door, a panic stricken Buffalo Bill Brody visits them. It seems that the Eastminster pet show is being held the next day, and his dragon, Fluffy, the heavy favourite, has been kidnapped. Mallory’s nocturnal hunt for the miniature dragon takes him to some of the stranger sections of this Manhattan Greenwitch Village which is right around the corner from Greenwich Village and is populated by witches and covens; a wax museum where figures of Humphrey Bogart, Sydney Greenstreet and Peter Lorre come alive; Gracie Mansion which is haunted by the ghosts of former mayors; and the Bureau of Missing Creatures, a movie set where they’re filming a PBS documentary on zombies and various other denizens of the Manhattan night. As Mallory follows the leads and hunts for clues, he comes up against one dead end after another. Along the way he meets a few old friends and enemies, and a host of strange new inhabitants of this otherworldly Manhattan. Aided by a strange goblin named Jeeves, Mallory has only one night to find a tiny dragon that’s hidden somewhere in a city of seven million.

Santiago

Bandit, murderer, known to all, seen by none…
has he killed a thousand men? Has he saved a dozen world? His legend is as large as the Rim itself, his trail as elusive as a wisp of starlight in the empty realms of space. The reward for him is the largest in history.

The Return of Santiago

A decade ago, Hugo and Nebula Award winning author Mike Resnick captivated the imagination of a generation of readers with his star spanning saga Santiago, an epic tale of a daring outlaw and rebel whose life had become legend. The novel won high praise from readers and critics alike, and was hailed as a modern masterwork of science fiction adventure. Now, at last, Resnick offers a new chapter in this spellbinding saga with The Return of Santiago. It has been more than a century since the bandit and assassin known as Santiago blazed a trail of havoc and glory across the Inner Frontier. Some say he is immortal, destined to return again when he is needed most. Some say he was gunned down by a bounty hunter long ago. Others whisper that he never existed at all. When Danny Briggs, a bright but unexceptional thief, stumbles upon the lost poems of Black Orpheus, the poet who had immortalized Santiago with verses about his friends, foes, and exploits, he begins an interstellar odys sey to unravel the truth behind Santiago’s legend. And, in the farthest reaches of the Rim, Danny comes face to face with Santiago. Brim*ming with action, excitement, mystery, and suspense, The Return of Santiago is pure storytelling in the grand tradition.

Mutiny

The starship Theodore Roosevelt is fighting on the far outskirts of a galactic war, its crew made up of retreads and raw recruits. A new first officer reports, Wilson Cole, a man with a reputation for exceeding his orders but getting results. He’s been banished to the Teddy R for his actions, but once there, he again ignores his orders.

Pirate

The date is 1967 of the Galactic Era, almost three thousand years from now. The Republic, created by the human race but not yet dominated by it, is in the midst of an all out war with the Teroni Federation. After his latest exploit saved millions of lives but embarrassed his superiors, Captain Wilson Cole, a man with a reputation for exceeding orders but getting results, found himself the victim of the media feeding frenzy, a political scapegoat despite years of dedicated military service. Faced with a court martial, he was rescued by the loyal crew of his ship, the Theodore Roosevelt. Now branded mutineers, the crew of the Teddy R. has quit the Republic, never to return. Seeking to find a new life for themselves, Wilson Cole and comrades remake the Teddy R. as a Pirate ship and set sail for the lawless Inner Frontier. Here, powerful warlords, cut throat Pirates, and struggling colonies compete for survival in a game where you rarely get a second chance to learn the rules. But military discipline is poor preparation for a life of pillaging and plundering, and Cole’s principles naturally limit his targets. Seeking an education on the nature of piracy, Cole hunts more knowledgeable players. Enter the beautiful but deadly Valkyrie, Val for short, and the enigmatic alien fence known as David Copperfield. But hanging over everything is the fearsome alien Pirate the Hammerhead Shark. With ‘Starship: Pirate‘, five time Hugo winner Mike Resnick continues the story begun in his very first military SF. Will the galaxy ever be the same?

Mercenary

The date is 1968 of the Galactic Era, almost three thousand years from now. The Republic, created by the human race but not yet dominated by it, is in the midst of an all out war with the Teroni Federation. Captain Wilson Cole, a man with a reputation for exceeding orders but getting results, found himself the victim of a media feeding frenzy, a political scapegoat despite years of dedicated military service. Faced with a court martial, he was rescued by the loyal crew of his ship, the Theodore Roosevelt. Branded mutineers, the Teddy R has quit the Republic, never to return. Seeking to find a new life, Wilson Cole first remade the Teddy R as a pirate ship plying the spaceways of the lawless Inner Frontier. But military discipline and honour were a poor match for a life of pillaging and plundering, and Cole’s principles naturally limited his targets. Taking on a new role, the Teddy R becomes a Mercenary ship, hiring out to the highest bidder. Whether it’s evacuating a hospital before war can reach it, freeing a client from an alien prison, or stopping a criminal cartel from extorting money from a terrified planet, the crew of the Teddy R proves equal to the task. Along the way they form a partnership with the once human Platinum Duke, team up with a former enemy, and make the unique Singapore Station their headquarters. But the life of a Mercenary is not always predictable, and eventually circumstance pits Cole and the Teddy R against his right hand woman, the former Pirate Queen known as the Valkyrie. Soon the fragile trust that has grown between these two legends is put to the test as they find themselves on opposite sides of a job.

Rebel

The date is 1968 of the Galactic Era, almost three thousand years from now. The Republic, dominated by the human race, is in the midst of an all out war with the Teroni Federation. Almost a year has passed since the events of Starship: Mercenary. Captain Wilson Cole now commands a fleet of almost fifty ships, and he has become the single greatest military force on the Inner Frontier. With one exception. The Republic still comes and goes as it pleases, taking what it wants, conscripting men, and extorting taxes, even though the Frontier worlds receive nothing in exchange. And, of course, the government still wants Wilson Cole and the starship Theodore Roosevelt. He has no interest in confronting such an overwhelming force, and constantly steers clear of them. Then an incident occurs that changes everything, and Cole declares war on the Republic. Outnumbered and always outgunned, his fleet is no match for the Republic’s millions of military vessels, even after he forges alliances with the warlords he previously hunted down. It’s a hopeless cause…
but that’s just what Wilson Cole and the Teddy R. are best at.

Flagship

The date is 1970 of the Galactic Era, almost three thousand years from now, and the Republic, created by the human race but not yet dominated by it, finds itself in an all out war against the Teroni Federation, an alliance of races that resent Man’s growing military and economic power. The rebel starship, the Theodore Roosevelt, under the command of Wilson Cole, is preparing to lead Cole’s ragtag armada into the Republic, even though he is outnumbered thousands to one. Cole is convinced that the government has become an arrogant and unfeeling political entity and must be overthrown. The trick is to avoid armed conflict with the vast array of ships, numbering in the millions, in the Republic’s Navy. For a time Cole’s forces strike from cover and race off to safety, but he soon sees that is no way to conquer the mightiest political and military machine in the history of the galaxy. He realises that he must reach Deluros VIII, the headquarters world of the Republic and of the race of Man, in order to have any effect on the government at all but Deluros VIII is the best protected world in the Republic. But a new threat looms on the horizon. Cole, the Valkyrie, David Copperfield, Sharon Blacksmith, Jacovic, and the rest of the crew of the Teddy R face their greatest challenge yet, and the outcome will determine the fate of the entire galaxy.

The Branch

The Messiah of the Old Testament was no Prince of Peace. He was expected to come with sword and fire and raze the old kingdoms to the ground. There were four signs by which he would be known. Jesus of Nazareth fulfilled only one of the signs. That was more than a dozen other would be Messiahs could boast. Until 2047 A.D., when a grifter named Jeremiah the B fulfills them all and puts the world in more jeopardy than it’s been in since the comet hit 65 million years ago! Back in print after 15 years, complete and unabridged, here is Mike Resnick s controversial classic, The Branch. A stunner of a book. Barry N. Malzberg

Second Contact

It looked like a no-brainer to defense attorney Major Maxwell Becker. A starship captain has gone a little crazy and killed two of his crewmen in cold blood. Just plead insanity, make sure they give his client a nice, comfortable, padded cell, and go skiing at Aspen.

But the captain refuses to cop an insanity plea. He insists that the two crew members he killed were not humans, but aliens. That’s his story, and he’s sticking by it. So Becker reluctantly goes through the motions of trying to prove his case-

-and suddenly his witnesses start getting transferred or disappearing, and when he finally finds one he realizes there are holes in his story… and suddenly Becker is running for his life, hunted by every branch of the military. He can’t figure it out: he’s a loyal officer, he’s just doing his job as a military attorney, he’s never broken a law, there are no aliens: so why does everybody want him dead?

Join Hugo- and Nebula-winning author Mike Resnick as he chronicles Becker’s desperate attempt to learn the only thing that can save him: the truth.

The Other Teddy Roosevelts

Theodore Roosevelt: president, naturalist, explorer, author, cowboy, police commissioner, deputy marshal, soldier, taxidermist, ornithologist, and boxer. Everyone knows about that. But how about vampire hunter?Or African king?Or Jack the Ripper’s nemesis?Or World War I doughboy?Mike Resnick the most awarded short story writer in science fiction history, according to Locus has been the biographer of these other Teddy Roosevelts for almost two decades. Here you will find a familiar Roosevelt, but in unfamiliar surroundings stalking a vampire through the streets of New York, or a crazed killer down the back alleys of Whitechapel, coming face to face with the devastation of 20th Century warfare, waging an early battle for women’s suffrage, applying all his skills to bring American democracy to the untamed African wilderness, or coming face to face with one of H. G. Wells’ Martian invaders in the swamps of Cuba. And, as Winston Churchill said of the Arthurian legends, if these stories aren’t true, then they should have been. Enjoy.

Will the Last Person To Leave the Planet Please Shut Off the Sun?

This first collection of short fiction from Resnick Second Contact features several of his most popular stories and an array of less distinguished work. Girls for the Slime God

Girls for the Slime God is a collection based around three Henry Kuttner stories published in 1938, stories that almost actually delivered on the lurid promises of the pulp magazine covers of the day. Besides the Kuttner stories, the 1960 Playboy article by William Knoles that sparked the interest of future editor Mike Resnick and the story science fiction legend Isaac Asimov was prompted to write in response are included. As are the script that Mike’s wife Carol adapted from one of the stories and Barry Malzberg’s afterword that sheds a bit of additional light on the Asimov story. Wrapped in a cover by Hugo Award nominee Peggy Ransom, Girls for the Slime God is a fascinating look into an era when heroic spacemen saved scantily clad women from bug eyed monsters and evil scientists bent on galactic conquest.

New Dreams for Old

New Dreams for Old is a collection of science fiction and fantasy stories by Mike Resnick, showing the depth and range that has not only made him a popular seller, but also placed him fourth and climbing on the all time award list of all science fiction writers living and dead as compiled by Locus. This book contains award winners and nominees. It contains two stories that are currently in development by Hollywood. It contains stories that have won readers polls, that have won foreign prizes, and a few that are just out and out hilarious. Most of these stories constitute recent work. One of them ‘Travels With My Cats’ was a 2005 Hugo Award winner and a Nebula nominee, while another ‘A Princess of Earth’ was also a 2005 Hugo nominee. The story ‘Robots Don t Cry’ was a 2004 Hugo nominee the previous year. Also included are the Hugo and Nebula nominee ‘For I Have Touched the Sky,’ Hugo nominee ‘Mwalimu in the Squared Circle,’ and Hugo winner ‘The 43 Antarean Dynasties.’ This collection also includes two novellas that have never seen print outside of the members only Science Fiction Book Club. Are there really elephants on Neptune? What does Old MacDonald of nursery rhyme fame actually grow on his farm? Is there much difference between pruning elderly flowers and elderly people? A trio of award nominees, ‘The Elephants on Neptune,’ ‘Old MacDonald Had a Farm,’ and ‘Hothouse Flowers,’ provide the answers. This is a collection of enormous range and the highest quality. More to the point, every story will not only make the reader think, but feel. The collection is introduced by Nancy Kress, herself a multiple Hugo and Nebula winner, and a monthly columnist for Writer’s Digest.

Dreamwish Beasts and Snarks

At times humorous, at other times serious, this endearing collection of short fiction explores many concepts regarding fantastical or futuristic safaris. Detailing the many contrasting pitfalls of hunting, a hardboiled detective attempts to locate a unicorn in New York City on New Year’s Day, and in a later tale, must track down a millennia old vampire in order to save his assistant. In the Nebula nominated story Hunting the Snark, a classical big game hunt on a newly discovered planet develops similarities to Lewis Carroll s famous poem, yet ends with a surprising twist. In The Soul Eater and Nicobar Lane The Soul Eater s Story, separate views are offered from the hunter and the hunted in an eccentric love story that incorporates elements of Moby Dick and the legend of the Flying Dutchman. Offering a few somber features, Safari 2103 AD looks at a world where the number of wild animals can be counted on one s fingers, while in Bwana, colonists leave industrialized Africa to create a paradise on a new world, only to discover how fragile they are. Imaginative and captivating, each narrative offers a unique spin on what it means to be a hunter.

Blasphemy

Comprised of two novellas and five short stories from one of science fiction’s most renowned contemporary authors, this volume is a collection of all of Mike Resnick s works that deal with religious themes. From the story about the nature of killing to an offbeat interpretation of the coming of the Messiah at the end of the 21st century, these tales are all conversations elaborating Resnick s philosophies on God, Jesus, the Wandering Jew, and other elements of religion. Thought provoking and irreverent, these stories exemplify some of the great work from this award winning author.

Putting It Together

Subtitled ‘Turning Sow’s Ear Drafts into Silk Purse Stories,’ this may be the finest how-to-write book of the year. Resnick takes the reader through multiple drafts of his own award-winning stories, showing what he changed and why. Features questions and Resnick’s answers from readers who critiqued his drafts as he wrote them. Highly recommended.

The Dying Earth / Mazirian the Magician

The stories included in The Dying Earth introduce dozens of seekers of wisdom and beauty, lovely lost women, wizards of every shade of eccentricity with their runic amulets and spells. We meet the melancholy deodands, who feed on human flesh and the twk men, who ride dragonflies and trade information for salt. There are monsters and demons. Each being is morally ambiguous: The evil are charming, the good are dangerous. All are at home in Vance’s lyrically described fantastic landscapes like Embelyon where, The sky was a mesh of vast ripples and cross ripples and these refracted a thousand shafts of colored light, rays which in mid air wove wondrous laces, rainbow nets, in all the jewel hues…
. The dying Earth itself is otherworldly: A dark blue sky, an ancient sun…
. Nothing of Earth was raw or harsh the ground, the trees, the rock ledge protruding from the meadow; all these had been worked upon, smoothed, aged, mellowed. The light from the sun, though dim, was rich and invested every object of the land…
with a sense of lore and ancient recollection. Welcome. The Dying Earth and its sequels comprise one of the most powerful fantasy/science fiction concepts in the history of the genre. They are packed with adventure but also with ideas, and the vision of uncounted human civilizations stacked one atop another like layers in a phyllo pastry thrills even as it induces a sense of awe at…
the fragility and transience of all things, the nobility of humanity s struggle against the certainty of an entropic resolution. Dean Koontz, author of the Odd Thomas novels. He gives you glimpses of entire worlds with just perfectly turned language. If he d been born south of the border, he d be up for a Nobel Prize. Dan Simmons author of The Hyperion Cantos.

Cugel’s Saga / Cugel: The Skybreak Spatterlight

‘Vance sees himself in the tradition of popular fantasy writers, but his classic writing style is also comparagle to Homer’s Odyssey, and Cervante’s Don Quixote. Though the Cugel tales may lack the scope and pathos of the greatest adventure yarns, in the twenty-first century, they may be as close as one gets to the celebration of epic human perseverance.’–editor, Brilliance Audio Cugel’s Saga, published 17 years after Eyes of the Overworld, is the second novel that features the scoundrel and trickster, Cugel. Again, Cugel tests wits with Iucounu and acquires rudimentary powers himself. ‘Cugel the Clever [is a rogue so venal and unscrupulous that that he makes Harry Flashman look like Dudley Do-Right. How could you not love a guy like that?…
. Judging from the number of times that Cugel has come back…
you can’t keep a bad man down.’ -George R.R. Martin, author of A Song of Ice and Fire. ‘Cugel the Clever [is a liar and thief in a doomed world of liars and thieves…
. Probably the least attractive hero it would be possible to find, struggling through a universe like a Hieronymus Bosch painting, a hero only in that nearly everybody else he encounters in that universe is on the make too, and yet the Cugel stories are howlingly funny.’ -Kage Baker, author of Empress of Mars.

The Eyes of the Overworld / Cugel the Clever

The Eyes of the Overworld is the first of Vance’s picaresque novels about the scoundrel Cugel. Here he is sent by a magician he has wronged to a distant unknown country to retrieve magical lenses that reveal the Overworld. Conniving to steal the lenses, he escapes and, goaded by a homesick monster magically attached to his liver, starts to find his way home to Almery. The journey takes him across trackless mountains, wastelands, and seas. Vance s career began when he was in the merchant marine and continued through extended stays in exotic cities. Through cunning and dumb luck, the relentless Cugel survives one catastrophe after another, fighting off bandits, ghosts, and ghouls stealing, lying, and cheating without insight or remorse leaving only wreckage behind. Betrayed and betraying, he joins a cult group on a pilgrimage, crosses the Silver Desert as his comrades die one by one and, escaping the Rat People, obtains a spell that returns him home. There, thanks to incompetence and arrogance he misspeaks the words of a purloined spell and transports himself back to the same dismal place he began his journey.

Rhialto the Marvellous

Rhialto the Marvellous takes up the personal and political conflicts among a conclave of two dozen magicians of Ascolais and Almery in the 21st Aeon. The shocking appearance of the Llorio the Murtha, a powerful female force from an earlier aeon threatens to unbalance nature by ensqualming or feminizing the magicians. This triggers a tremendous struggle for power and the other mages turn against Rhialto. Hoping to reestablish his rightful place, Rhialto travels to other aeons to restore the missing Perciplex which projects the Mostrament, the constitution of the association. In his final adventure, Rhialto must, ultimately, travel to the very ends of time and space to confront an old adversary whom he had wronged and must commit further misdeeds to restore order. Out of this welter of exotic politics, values systems, personal eccentricity, and magic, the figure of Rhialto slowly comes into focus and takes on dimension. He is a vain, apparently superficial man, not ashamed to demonstrate his melancholy to enhance his reputation. But he is courteous, patient, and subtle, even kind. He is self aware and introspective as Cugel never could be the wisest and most sympathetic of all of Vance’s wizards.

Once upon a time, Jezebel was a powerful succubus, capable of seducing men and sucking out their souls. But that was before Hell put a bounty on her head. Now her only chance to escape a fate far worse than death is to live as a mortal, losing herself in a sea of unfamiliar humanity, in a place where sinners walk hand in hand with saints a place like Belle’s strip club in New York City.

Working as an exotic dancer is a piece of cake for a former demon who once specialized in sex. Taking money from men? Please. It’s like leading lawyers to the Lake of Fire. Plus the lingerie is great. But she hadn’t counted on meeting sexy Paul Hamilton, a man haunted by his past. Good bye, succubus; hello, lovestruck. Learning all about how complicated and pleasurable love can be, Jezebel thinks she’s turned her back on Hell.

But Hell hasn’t stopped looking for her. The secrets Jezebel holds are the most dangerous of all, the kind every demon in the Underworld would do their worst to protect. Demons are closing in, which is enough to make Jezebel shiver in her G string. But it’s her love for Paul that’s going to have deadly consequences…

Like the fact that bad boy incubus Daunuan keeps popping up from the Underworld to put some toe curling moves on her; that her former associates are trying to strong arm her back into the fold; and that every supernatural entity on the planet seems to want to have a conversation with her in the bathroom. But someone in the Underworld isn’t ready to play nice go figure, and this time, the stakes are nothing less than Paul’s immortal soul. If Hell wants Jesse back so badly, they’ve got her. But payback’s a bit*ch, and this bit*ch is about to rock Hell like a hurricane or lose her soul trying…

Lilith Unbound (With: Jonathan Moeller,,Lawrence Schimel,Ed Greenwood,,Elaine Cunningham,J. Robert King,,,Jackie Kessler,Stephen D. Sullivan)

‘Bound is the bewitching Lilith…
‘ So begins an ancient incantation for protection against the demon Lilith. Lilith, the First Woman, the wife Adam discarded. Lilith, the goddess of storms, the night bird. Hotter Than Hell (By:Jackie Kessler)

Daunuan was never the ambitious type. There’s so much to love about his job just the way it is mind blowing sexual prowess, the power to seduce any human, excellent dental plan. But now Pan, the King of Lust, has offered to make Daun his right hand incubus a position other demons would give their left horn for. All he has to do is entice a soul destined for heaven into a damnable act of lust. Should take, oh, seven minutes, tops. Then he meets his target, Virginia Reed. She’s cute. Funny. Smart. Unfathomably resistant to his charms. He can’t understand it. But Daun has centuries of seduction to his credit. He’s the best there is. Sooner or later he’ll transform this polar icecap of a female into a pool of molten desire, and every instinct tells him she’ll be worth the effort. Meanwhile, he has to deal with a plague of rogue demons Hell bent on taking him down, sent by an unknown enemy with a serious grudge. And one other problem: the dawning realization that he’s falling in love that unholiest of four letter words with the woman he’s about to doom for all eternity…
