Robert W Chambers Books Overview

Cardigan

1901. Illustrated. Chambers, American artist and writer, later turned to writing romantic fiction to earn a living. According to some estimates, Chambers had one of the most successful literary careers of his period, with a few of his works achieving bestseller status. The book begins: On the 1st of May, 1774, the anchor ice, which for so many months had silver plated the river’s bed with frosted crusts, was ripped off and dashed into a million gushing flakes by the amber outrush of the springtide flood. On that day I had laid my plans for fishing the warm shallows where the small fry, swarming in early spring, attract the great lean fish which have lain benumbed all winter under their crystal roof of ice. The Maid-At-Arms

1902. Chambers, American artist and writer, later turned to writing romantic fiction to earn a living. According to some estimates, Chambers had one of the most successful literary careers of his period, with a few of his works achieving bestseller status. The Maid at Arms begins: We drew bridle at the crossroads; he stretched his legs in his stirrups, raised his arms, yawned, and dropped his huge hands upon either thigh with a resounding slap. Well, good bye, he said gravely, but made no movement to leave me. Do we part here? I asked, sorry to quit my chance acquaintance of the Johnstown highway. He nodded, yawned again, and removed his round cap of silver fox fur to scratch his curly head. We certainly do part at these crossroads, if you are bound for Varicks, he said. I waited a moment, then thanked him for the pleasant entertainment his company had afforded me, and wished him a safe journey. See other titles by this author available from Kessinger Publishing.

The Reckoning

1905. Chambers, American artist and writer, later turned to writing romantic fiction to earn a living. According to some estimates, Chambers had one of the most successful literary careers of his period, with a few of his works achieving bestseller status. From the Preface: The author’s intention is to treat, in a series of four or five romances, that part of the war for independence which particularly affected the great landed families of Northern New York: the Johnsons, represented by Sir William, Sir John, Guy Johnson, and Colonel Claus; the notorious Butlers, father and son; the Schuylers, Van Rensselaers, and others. The first romance of the series, Cardigan, was followed by the second, The Maid at Arms. The third in order is not completed. The fourth is the present volume. As Cardigan pretended to portray life on the baronial estate of Sir William Johnson, the first uneasiness concerning the coming trouble, the first discordant note struck in the harmonious councils of the Long House, so, in The Maid at Arms, which followed in order, the author attempted to paint a patroon family disturbed by the approaching rumble of battle. That romance dealt with the first serious split in the Iroquois Confederacy; it showed the Long House shattered though not fallen; the demoralization and final flight of the great landed families who remained loyal to the British Crown; and it struck the key not to the future attitude of the Iroquois toward the patriots of the frontier revenge for their losses at the battle of Oriskany and ended with the march of the militia and Continental troops on Saratoga. The third romance, as yet incomplete and unpublished, deals with the warpath and those who followed it, led by the landed gentry of Tyron County, and ends with the first solid blow delivered at the Long House, and the terrible punishment of the Great Confederacy. The present romance, the fourth in chronological order, picks up the thread at that point. See other titles by this author available from Kessinger Publishing.

The Hidden Children

William Chambers May 26, 1865 December 16, 1933 was an American artist and writer. The Little Red Foot

1921. Chambers, American artist and writer, later turned to writing romantic fiction to earn a living. According to some estimates, Chambers had one of the most successful literary careers of his period, with a few of his works achieving bestseller status. The book begins: The day Sir William died there died the greatest American of his day. Because, on that midsummer evening, His Excellency was still only a Virginia gentlemen not yet famous, and best known because of courage and sagacity displayed in that bloody business of Braddock. In the Quarter

Rex concealed a frown in the ample folds of the towel. It crossed his mind that the colonel might better have stayed and taken care of his own daughter. If he, Rex, had had a sister, would he have liked her to be on a Bavarian mountaintop in a company composed of a gamekeeper, the manager of a Paris theater and his wife, and a young person who was about to make her debut in opera bouffe, and to have no better guardian than a roving young art student? Rex felt his unfitness for the post with a pang of compunction. Meantime he rubbed his head, and Monsieur Bordier talked tranquilly on. But between vexation and friction Gethryn lost the thread of Monsieur’s remarks for a while.

The Red Republic

1895. Chambers, American artist and writer, later turned to writing romantic fiction to earn a living. According to some estimates, Chambers had one of the most successful literary careers of his period, with a few of his works achieving bestseller status. The book begins: All Englishmen are pigs! observed a young man who stood swaying in the doorway of the Cafe Cardinal. Nobody replied to this criticism. The cafe was full. The young man advanced unsteadily to the center of the long room and looked about for a seat. His lusterless eyes traveled from table to table until they became fixed on a group of people in the embrasure of one of the windows which opened on the rue des Ecoles. Toward these people he shuffled, but when he laid a heavy hand on the shoulder of one, a woman, she cried out and shrank away. A man sitting beside her started up angrily, but sat down again when he saw who it was, and resumed his jaunty air. See other titles by this author available from Kessinger Publishing.

Excerpt from book: Ill TOWARDS sunset I came out on a sheer granite cliff where the sea birds were whirling and clamoring, and the great breakers dashed, rolling in double thundered reverberations on the sun dyed, crimson sands below the rock. Across the half moon of beach towered another cliff, and, behind this, I saw a column of smoke rising in the still air. It certainly came from Halyard’s chimney, although the opposite cliff prevented me from seeing the house itself. I rested a moment to refill my pipe, then resumed rifle and pack, and cautiously started to skirt the cliffs. I had descended half way towards the beech, and was examining the cliff opposite, when something on the very top of the rock arrested my attention a man darkly outlined against the sky. The next moment, however, I knew it could not be a man, for the object suddenly glided over the face of the cliff and slid down the sheer, smooth lace like a lizard. Before I could get a square look at it, the thing crawled into the surf or, at least, it seemed to but the whole episode occurred so suddenly, so unexpectedly, that I was not sure I had seen anything at all. However, I was curious enough to climb the cliff on the land side and make my way towards the spot whereI imagined I saw the man. Of course, there was nothing there not a trace of a human being, I mean. Something had been there a sea otter, possibly for the remains of a freshly killed fish lay on the rock, eaten to the back bone and tail. The next moment, below me, I saw the house, a freshly painted, trim, flimsy structure, modern, and very much out of harmony with the splendid savagery surrounding it. It struck a nasty, cheap note in the noble, gray monotony of headland and sea. The descent was easy enough. I crossed the crescent beach, hard as pink m…

The Danger Mark

‘I wonder,’ mused Geraldine, ‘if there is anything the matter with us, Scott?’ ‘Why?’ ‘Oh I don’t know. People stare at us so nurses always watch us and begin to whisper as soon as we come along. Do you know what a boy said to me once when I skated very far ahead of Kathleen?’ ‘What did he say?’ inquired Scott, flattening his nose against the window pane to see whether it still hurt him. ‘He asked me if I were too rich and proud to play with other children. I was so surprised; and I said that we were not rich at all, and that I never had had any money, and that I was not a bit proud, and would love to stay and play with him if Kathleen permitted me.’ ‘Did Kathleen let you? Of course she didn’t.’ ‘I told her what the boy said and I showed her the boy, but she wouldn’t let me stay and play.’ ‘Kathleen’s a pig.’ ‘No, she isn’t, poor dear. They make her act that way Mr. Tappan makes her. Our grandfather didn’t want us to have friends.’ ‘I’ll tell you what,’ said Scott impatiently, ‘when I’m old enough, I’ll have other boys to play with whether Kathleen and and that Thing likes it or not.’ The Thing was the Half Moon Trust Company.

Excerpt from book: PART TWO WHAT SHE BECAME chapter Section 4 Special Messenger N the third day the pursuit had become so hot, so unerring, that she dared no longer follow the rutty cart road. Toward sundown she wheeled her big bony roan into a cow path which twisted through alders for a mile or two, emerging at length on a vast stretch of rolling country, where rounded hills glimmered golden in the rays of the declining sun. Tall underbrush flanked the slopes; little streams ran darkling through the thickets; the ground was moist, even on the ridges; and she could not hope to cover the deep imprint of her horse’s feet. She drew bridle, listening, her dark eyes fixed on the setting sun. There was no sound save the breathing of her horse, the far sweet trailing song of a spotted sparrow, the undertones of some hidden rill welling up through matted tangles of vine and fern and long wild gras*ses. Sitting her worn saddle, sensitive face partly turned, she listened, her eyes sweeping the bit of open ground behind her. Nothing moved there. Presently she slipped off one gauntlet, fumbled in her corsage, drew out a crumpled paper, and spread it flat. It was a map. With one finger she traced her road, bending in her saddle, eyebrows gathering in perplexity. Back and forth moved the finger, now hovering here and there in hesitation, now lifted to her lips in silent uncertainty. Twice she turned her head, intensely alert, but there was no sound save the cawing of crows winging across the deepening crimson in the west. At last she folded the map and thrust it into the bosom of her mud splashed habit; then, looping up the skirt of her kirtle, shedismounted, leading her horse straight into the oak scrub and on through a dim mile of woodland, always descending, until the clear rushing music o…

1919. Chambers, American artist and writer, later turned to writing romantic fiction to earn a living. According to some estimates, Chambers had one of the most successful literary careers of his period, with a few of his works achieving bestseller status. The novel begins: The butler made an instinctive movement to detain him, but he flung him aside and entered the drawing room, the servant recovering his equilibrium and following on a run. Light from great crystal chandeliers dazzled him for a moment, the butler again confronted him but hesitated under the wicked glare from his eyes. Then through the brilliant vista, the young fellow caught a glimpse of a dining room, a table where silver and crystal glimmered, and a great gray man just lowering a glass of wine from his lips to gaze at him with quiet curiosity. Excerpt from book: CHAPTER III SUB JUDICE r’SN’T this a mess!’ said Silvette in a m I m clear, unembarrassed voice, giving him her hand. ‘ Imagine my excitement up on the roof, Mr. Edgerton, when Diana appeared and told me what a perfectly delightful man had come to evict us! ‘ ‘ I didn’t say it that way,’ observed Diana, her ears as pink as the powder puff peonies above them. ‘ My sister,’ she explained, ‘ is one of those girls whose apparent frankness is usually nonsense. I’m merely warning you, Mr. Edgerton.’ Silvette a tall, free limbed, healthy, and plumper edition of her sister laughed. ‘ In the first place,’ she said, ‘ suppose we have luncheon. There is a fruit salad which I prepared after breakfast. Our maid is out, but we know how to do such things, having been made to when schoolgirls.’ ‘ You’ll stay, won’t you ? ‘ asked Diana. ‘ Poor Mr. Edgerton where else is he to go?’ said Silvette calmly. ‘Diana, if you’ll set places for three at that very beautiful and expensive antique table, I’ll bring some agreeable things from the refrigerator.’ ‘ Could I be of any use ?’ inquired Edgerton, smiling. ‘ Indeed, you can be. Talk to Diana and explain to her how respectable we are and you are, and how everything is certain to be properly arranged to everybody’s satisfaction. Diana has a very wonderful idea, and she’s come to one of her celebrated snap shot conclusions a conclusion, Mr. Edgerton, most flattering to you. Ask her.’ And she went away toward the kitchenette not at all embarrassed by her pretty morning attire nor by the thick braid of golden hair which hung to her girdle. Diana cast a swift glance at Edgerton, and, seeing him smile, smiled, too, and set about laying places for three with snowy linen, crystal, silver, and the lovely old Spode porcelain which had…

There’s no doubt about that! But, as I said before, what can / do? As soon as there is an alarm given, I am obliged to call in as fire fighters the very ruffians who set the woods afire; and I am forced by law to pay ’em two dollars a day! That’s why they set the fires, G d damn ’em! / know, it: the Commissioner knows it; but what are we to do? I can’t catch ’em in the act. I haven’t any men to patrol the forests. And when the woods are afire I’ve got to call out people to fight the flames haven’t I? or the whole North Woods would go up in smoke and ashes. Now, I ask you, gentlemen, what am I to do?’ ‘I can’t see what more you can do,’ admitted Kemper. ‘It’s up to the State to establish a forest constabulary a body of trained foresters for patrolduty. And if that isn’t done, and done pretty soon, I can see the end of the North Woods.’ The Fire Warden, standing there in his shirtsleeves, rubbed a stubbly chin with his scarred thumb, reflectively: ‘I’ll admit,’ he said, ‘that now and then a fire is started by careless hunters or by fishermen, or fool berry pickers. But the proportion is small. It’s the miserable half starved creatures who try to keep soul and body together in these woods who set fire to the woods so they can earn the only money they ever see from one year to the next!’ ‘Lazy pigs,’ grunted Rittenfeldt, ‘mit a leedle industry they grow for themselves vat farmers grow; und so iss it they have to eat sufficient.’ The Fire Warden shook his head: ‘The s…

Excerpt from book: IN THE NAME OF THE MOST HIGH. ON the third day toward noon the fire slackened ; the smoke from the four batteries on the bluff across the north fork of the river slowly lifted, drifting to the east. The Texas riflemen kept up a pattering fusilade until one o’clock, then their bugles rang ‘ Cease firing, ” and the eahoes of the last sulky shot died out against the cliffs. Keenan, crouching behind one of his hot guns, could see the Texas sharpshooters retiring to the bluff, little grey shadows in the scrub oak thicket gliding, flitting like wild hedge birds toward the nest of cannon above. ‘ Don’t let ’em get away like that ! ‘ shouted Douglas, ‘ give it to them in the name of God !’ And Keenan smiled, and sent the Texans a messenger in the name of God a messenger which fell thundering from the sky above them, crushing the face of the iron stained cliff and the lives of those who had clustered there to breathe a little. ‘ Amen,’ said Keenau, patting his gun. Douglas crawled out of a hole in the rocks and drew himself up to the edge of the breastworks. Cleymore emerged from a shallow rifle pit and walked slowly along the iutrenchments, motioning his men back into their burrows. ‘ Because,’ he said, ‘ a hole in the hill is worth two in your head get into that ditch, Morris ! Cunningham, if you don’t duck that red head of yours, I ’11 dock it ! ‘ ‘ Captain Cleymore,’ said Douglas, lowering his field glass, ‘ two batteries have limbered up, and are trotting toward the cemetery ‘ ‘ May they trot into it, and stay there ! ‘ said Keenan, examining the wreck of an ammunition chest in the ditch. Cleymore studied the bluff with his marine glas*ses for awhile, then called to Keenan: ‘ How many guns have you now ?” ‘ Four,’ shouted Keenan from the ditch; ‘ all…

And once, into her halfdreaming senses came the soft stirring of wings, and she opened her eyes and looked up, startled and thrilled.

Excerpt from book: his awakening, ‘is to consider you impersonally and make notes of everything.’ And he fumbled for pencil and note book, and, rising, stepped across to the front door, where a light was burning. Standing under it he resolutely composed his thoughts; but to save his life he could remember nothing of which to make a memorandum. This worried him, and finally alarmed him. And so long did he stand there, note book open, pencil poised, and a sickly expression of dismay imprinted upon his otherwise agreeable features, that the girl rose at last from her chair, glanced in through the door at him, and then came forward. ‘What is the matter ?’ she asked. ‘The matter is,’ said Brown, ‘that I don’t seem to have anything to write about.’ ‘You are tired,’ she said. ‘I think we both are a little tired.’ ‘I am not. Anyway, I have something to write about now. Wait a moment till I make a note of how you walk the easy, graceful, flowing motion, so exquisitely light and ‘ ‘But 7 don’t walk like that!’ she said, laughing. ‘ Graciously as a youthful goddess,’ muttered Brown, scribbling away busily in his notebook. ‘Tell me; what motive had you just now in rising and coming to ask me what was the matter with such a sweetly apprehensive expression in your eyes?’ ‘My my motive?’ she repeated, astonished. ‘Yes. You had one, hadn’t you?’ ‘Why I don’t know. You looked worried; so I came.’ ‘The motive,’ said Brown, ‘was feminine solicitude an emotion natural to nice women. Thank you.’ And he made a note of it. ‘But motives and emotions are different things,’ she said timidly. ‘I had no motive for coming to ask you why you seemed troubled.’ ‘Wasn’t your motive to learn why?’ ‘Y yes, I suppose so.’ He laid his head on one side and inspected her critically. ‘And…
