Hoop Crazy!

When Nick and his pals suddenly find themselves short a man for the NBA sponsored three on three tournament they plan to enter during the summer, the answer seems simple enough. Nick, Kia and Mark are the key players on the team, so the fourth, though mandatory according to the rules, doesn’t really have to be good at the game. A surprise visit from Nick’s mother’s cousin brings Ned, who is exactly Nick’s age but not exactly athletic, into the picture and onto the team. Nick and Ned, though related, are about as different as two boys born on the same day can be. And they don’t get along. Nick cares mostly about sports and basketball is his passion. Ned is nuts about bugs and lives out West in a national park, three hours’ drive from the nearest basketball court. The other three teammates figure that as long as they don’t actually have to use Ned in a game they will be fine. Then Mark sprains his ankle and can’t play. Now Nick and Kia must find a way to make Ned a real team player

Long Shot

Book four in the popular basket ball series.

Road Trip

Nick, Kia and their Mississauga Magic teammates are on the road, heading off to an elite hoop tournament in the Mid West. Feeling outmatched by many of the high profile teams, the kids are still looking forward to a good time. However, Coach Barkley, who played college ball in the area and is still regarded as a hero, has other ideas. As usual, nothing but winning will be good enough for Coach. As the tournament progresses, the Magic players learn to believe in themselves and come to realize that they can hold their own against the opposing teams. And then, just as the team seems to have a shot at making the finals, the eligibility of one of their players is questioned and they face disqualification. Will the team spirit the Road Trip has instilled be strong enough to get the kids over this hurdle?

Off Season

Readers of Hoop Crazy will remember Ned as the bug loving beanpole who lives in an isolated national park out West, three hours from the nearest basketball court. But Ned’s participation in the three on three tournament when he visited Nick has sparked his interest in the game and now he and his father have built their own basketball court in the wilderness. And Ned’s hoop skills have improved considerably. Nick and Kia are just beginning to get the hang of life in the wilderness when disaster strikes. A raging forest fire threatens to destroy Ned’s home and cut off their escape.

Underdog

Underdog is the seventh installment in Eric Walter’s popular basketball series for young readers.

Triple Threat (With: Jerome Williams)

Three bullies learn a lesson. The eigth book in Eric Walters’ basketball series.

Boot Camp (With: Jerome Williams,Johnnie Williams III)

When Nick and Kia are invited to former Toronto Raptor Jerome ‘Junk Yard Dog’ Williams’ basketball camp in Washington, DC, they quickly discover that this is no ordinary summer hoop camp. This is a basketball boot camp that focuses on discipline and hard work. Jerome and Johnnie’s father, ‘Sergeant Push up’ to the campers, is the no nonsense camp director. When scrimmages begin, Nick and Kia fall victim to the antics of their teammate Jamal, a talented but troubled player who tries to win games on his own. Only after some hard lessons and some tough losses do the three youngsters learn that it takes everyone on the team to accomplish real success. For the ninth installment of this best selling series, Eric Walters has teamed up with retired NBA star Jerome Williams and his brother Johnnie Williams III to write another exciting chapter in the lives of Nick and Kia. Although Boot Camp is fiction, there is a real JYD Basketball Boot Camp in Washington each summer. The Williams’ royalties will go to support the JYD Project, which offers a variety of community outreach programs for youth in Canada and the United States. 20070608

Once they arrive at the airport, however, they quickly learn that the camp is not what it seemed.

Tiger Trap

Sarah and Nicholas Fraser, the irrepressible sister and brother duo of Eric Walters’s bestselling Tiger by the Tail, Tiger in Trouble, and Tiger Town, are back for a fourth adventure. Then a man named Anthony appears on the farm, and Sarah and Nick have a lot more to fear. Who is this newcomer friend or foe, patron or poacher? All Sarah knows is that some shady characters are threatening her beloved animals again, a bunch of gun toting crooks are trying to buy illegal wildlife for zoos, and some sort of parrot disease has put McCurdy’s farm under quarantine!

Stars

Joseph had never known that the sky could be so big, but somehow out in the wilderness everything was clearer. Maybe he had just been too busy stealing and running and hiding from the cops to look up. Or maybe being stuck with a stupid bunch of losers and social workers was beginning to get to him. Whatever it was, the sky was huge, and filled with Stars. And the Stars were what Joseph liked best.

In the pages of her diary, Helen records the fate of the crew and her family as they leave the ship and try to make their way across shifting ice flows, through blinding blizzards and past polar bears to safety.

Diamonds in the Rough

I pulled out the picture Cole had given us…
my gaze fell on the boy, my uncle. I thought about the sadness in his eyes and what he’d been through at such a young age. And I was shocked to see a bit of me, staring back. After the sudden death of Sky’s mother, Sky wants nothing more than to keep her and her two young sisters together. The solution may lie with a newly discovered uncle. But Cole’s criminal history and his constant struggle to escape the past are not exactly the stable parental qualities that the authorities are looking for. When Sky and Cole strike a mutually beneficial deal to create an acceptable image, they both get more than they bargained for.

The Money Pit Mystery

Sam and Beth accompany their mother on a visit to their grandfather’s home on Oak Island. What occurs when they arrive is more than Sam could have hoped for, more surprising than the magic tricks he spends hours perfecting. Something strange seems to be happening to grand dad, a fact confirmed by his odd behavior and the disgusting state of his once immaculate home. Apart from losing his memory, he s also spending a lot of time engaged in a bizarre hunt for a 200 year old treasure. When Sam is bitten by the treasure bug too, not even the discovery of a human skull or a dangerous run in with a monstrous digging machine can keep him and the whole family from plunging into a breakneck speed mystery, in which the winner will take all.

The Hydrofoil Mystery

It is 1915 and 13 year old William is sent by his mother to spend the summer working with an eccentric inventor Alexander Graham Bell and his crew in a tiny Nova Scotia town. They are hard at work designing and building a hydrofoil boat that they hope will help the allies defend themselves from the German U boats that are sinking ships and threatening coastal towns during the war. William’s mom is hoping that the hard work and close community will keep William, who has developed a taste for gambling and tough ways, out of trouble. But the sleeping village life William thinks he has been sentenced to turns out to be something quite different as the young boy finds himself embroiled in a deadly mystery that is plaguing the hydrofoil and its builders. Packed with action and suspense, as well as fascinating glimpses of the past, The Hydrofoil Mystery is a wonderful adventure for any young reader. AUTHOR BIO: Eric Walters is an elementary school teacher in Mississauga who began writing as a way to encourage his students to become more enthusiastic about their creative writing. He is the author of five other children’s books including Trapped In Ice, which was shortlisted for the Ruth Schwartz Award and the Silver Birch Award.

Rebound

It’s like I said, it isn’t what you do with the shots you make, but the ones that don’t go in. The Rebounds. Sean vows that this year will be different: he ll stay out of trouble and make the basketball team, even if it means ditching his old friends. David also needs to make a new start. A serious accident has left him confined to a wheelchair and horribly bitter about how his life has changed. Forced together, the boys learn to like each other, and their friendship may be what they both need to get back in the game.

Northern Exposures

Kevin Spreekmeester can’t believe it’s not a practical joke. He’s just won a photography contest he doesn’t even remember entering and his winning photo was the result of a weird shutter glitch not the amazing talent that the judges seem to think he possesses. What’s even more bizarre is that the prize is a five day trip to Churchill, Manitoba, to photograph polar bears with a renowned wildlife photographer. It all sounds pretty good though it’s a chance for Kevin to escape his ber controlling parental units and the tedium of school. Of course, Kevin doesn’t count on losing his luggage, or becoming the youngest and most reluctant member of a seniors’ eco tour, or even finding himself sprinting across the tundra with a very large, hungry polar bear about to swat him into oblivion. Northern Exposures is Eric Walters’ latest thrilling adventure complete with his trademark humor and sensitivity toward the growing up challenges faced by his young characters. It’s fun and exciting packed with fascinating encounters with bears and thrilling rides in the gargantuan all terrain buggies used to spot Arctic wildlife and it manages to introduce the issue of environmental commercialization to its young audience with subtlety. Always a number one choice of both kids and parents, Eric Walters does it again with this terrific new story.

Overdrive

I got the car moving. I had one eye on the road in front and the other on my rearview mirror, trying to see the accident. I saw flashing red lights behind me in the distance. For a split second I took my foot off the accelerator. Then I pressed down harder, picked up speed and took a quick left turn. Jake has finally got his driver’s license, and tonight he has his brother’s car as well. He and his friend Mickey take the car out and cruise the strip. When they challenge another driver to a street race, a disastrous chain reaction causes an accident. Jake and Mickey leave the scene, trying to convince themselves they were not involved. Jake finds he cannot pretend it didn’t happen and struggles with the right thing to do. Should he pretend he was not involved? Or should he go to the police? 20041001

She has a secret crush on a boy in her class and she thinks Elvis Presley is ‘dreamy.’ Elizabeth also has a part time job babysitting an adorable little grade 2 girl named Suzie, and Suzie’s not so adorable grade 6 brother, David. Elizabeth s job is to walk Suzie and David home after school and then stay at their house with them until their mother gets home from work. David resents Elizabeth because he thinks he is too old for a babysitter, and he goes out of his way to make life miserable for her.

On this particular evening, however, Elizabeth has more than a badly behaved boy to contend with. It is on this October night that Hurricane Hazel roars down on Toronto, bringing torrential rains that cause extensive flooding. David and Suzie s house is on Raymore Drive, a street that will be practically wiped out by the floodwaters.

They are surrounded by rising water. The electricity goes out. The phone goes dead. Still, Elizabeth is sure they will be safe as long as they remain in the house.

But are Elizabeth and the children really as ‘Safe as Houses‘? Bifocal (With: Deborah Ellis)

On the White Ravens’ Outstanding New International Books for Children and Young Adults list, 2008 ForeWord Magazine’s Book of the Year Awards Bronze Medal Winner YA Fiction category, 2007 Snow Willow Award nominee, 2008 CCBC’s Best Books for Kids & Teens, 2008 Two bestselling authors join forces to write a powerful novel about racism. A student arrested on suspicions of terrorism. A high school torn apart by racism. Two boys from two different sets of circumstances forced to choose sides. These are the issues at the heart of Bifocal, a groundbreaking new novel for young adults. The story is told from two different points of view. Haroon is a serious student devoted to his family. His grandparents emigrated from Afghanistan. Jay is a football star devoted to his team. He is white. One day their high school is put on lockdown, and the police arrest a Muslim student on suspicion of terrorist affiliations. He might be guilty. Or is he singled out because of his race? The entire student body fragments along racial lines and both Haroon and Jay find that their differences initially put them at odds. The Muslim students become targets and a smoke bomb is set off near their lockers while Jay and his teammates believe they’ve been set up to look like racists. Bifocal is, by no stretch, an easy book. Award winning authors Deborah Ellis and Eric Walters deliver a serious, hard hitting book about racism that does not talk down to young people.

They exchange the traditional wooden targets for human targets and, before they know it, they are running the most popular event at the fair. While doing research for a social justice class, he learns that the manufacturer of the uniforms is on the top ten list for human rights violations. She’s not the only one concerned about the dogs: a group of animal rights protestors become a regular fixture outside the institute. When the group leader tries to enlist Ruth’s support, she is torn between her sympathy for animals and her loyalty to Dr. Banting and Mr. Best.

When Elephants Fight (With: Adrian Bradbury)

When elephants fight, it is the grass that suffers. This ancient proverb of the Kikuyu people, a tribal group in Kenya, Africa, is as true today as when the words were first spoken, perhaps thousands of years ago. Its essence is simplicity when the large fight, it is the small who suffer most. And when it comes to war, the smallest, the most vulnerable, are the children. ‘When Elephants Fight’ presents the stories of five children Annu, Jimmy, Nadja, Farooq and Toma from five very different and distinct conflicts Sri Lanka, Uganda, Sarejevo, Afghanistan and the Sudan. Along with these very personal accounts, the book also offers brief analyses of the history and geopolitical issues that are the canvas on which these conflicts are cast. ‘When Elephants Fight’ is about increasing awareness. For the future to be better than the past, better than the present, we must help equip our children with an awareness and understanding of the world around them and their ability to bring about change. Gandhi stated, ‘If you are going to change the world, start with the children.’
