Arthur O Friel Books Overview

Tiger River

A novel by the popular pulp fiction writer.

The Pathless Trail

Arthur Olney Friel 1887 1959 was one of the most popular writers for the adventure pulps. He began appearing in Adventure magazine in 1919 with stories set in the Amazon jungle featuring the characters Pedro and Lourenco, two rubber industry workers who undergo harrowing experiences in the impenetrable jungle surrounding the Javary River. Friel, a 1909 Yale University graduate, had been South American editor for the Associated Press which led him into his subject matter. In 1922, he became a real life explorer when he took a six month trip down Venezuela’s Orinoco River and its tributary, the Ventuari River. His travel account was published in 1924 as The River of Seven Stars. In late 1922, Friel began writing longer works, which were serialized in Adventure. The first ones, featuring a trio of adventurers called McKay, Ryan and Knowlton, and other characters, were The Pathless Trail 1922, Tiger River 1923 and Mountains of Mystery 1925. He remained a popular writer in Adventure throughout the 1920s and 1930s.

King of Kearsarge

A novel by the popular pulp fiction writer.

Forgotten Island

A novel by the South American explorer and popular pulp fiction writer.

Amazon Nights

When one thinks of the classic adventure story authors of the pulp fiction era, H. Rider Haggard, Talbot Mundy, and Rafael Sabatini may come first to mind. But Arthur O. Friel’s stellar contributions particularly his stories featuring Lourenco and Pedro, two workers on a rubber tree plantation in the Amazon Jungle. Their adventures in the Amazon’s mysterious back country certainly deserve honorable mention. Here are tales of peril and last minute rescue, brutal savages and men of honor, snake worshipping armies and half ape Lost Races and many more! For in the shadows of the rain forest, many evils lurk…
human and otherwise! Features a new introduction by Darrell Schweitzer, eight short stories, and The Jararaca, a complete novel.
