Barbara Park Books Overview

Don’t Make Me Smile

‘Don’t even try to make me smile about this,’ Charlie Hickle warns his parents. They’ve just dropped a major bombshell: They’re getting a divorce and they expect him to be happy for them! Well, Charlie has some big news for Mom and Dad: he’s not going to let them get away with this! Instead of being cheerful, he launches a campaign to show them how he really feels. He refuses to eat this mother’s cooking. He causes trouble in school. He makes nasty remarks about his father’s shabby new apartment. But no matter what he does, his parents just don’t seem to get the picture. Isn’t it obvious they’re ruining his life?

My Mother Got Married

‘Having divorced parents was bad enough, but then Charles’ mother marries Ben. Ben’s two children move in, and Charles has to share his bedroom with five year old Thomas. Charles’ reflections on his situation, told in perceptive contemporary language, are laced with humor and emotion. At times both funny and touching, this sequel to Don’t Make Me Smile paints a realistic picture of life in a blended family.’ School Library Journal. Reading level: 4.8.

The Kid in the Red Jacket

‘Ten year old Howard Jeeter’s life is temporarily destroyed by a cross country move. His first contact in Massachusetts is Molly, an intrusive first grader, whose attempts to be friendly drive Howard to distraction. Park writes in a witty and bittersweet style about the awkward, super sensitive age of early adolescence; her humor reflects and sharpens the sensibilities of her readers in the areas of family and friend relationships. Another first rate addition to the middle grade popular reading shelf.’ starred School Library Journal. Reading level: 4.5.

Mick Harte Was Here

From Publishers Weekly ‘I don’t want to make you cry. I just want to tell you about Mick. But I thought you should know right up front that he’s not here anymore. I just thought that would be fair.’ Phoebe, the eighth grade narrator of Park’s Buddies; Don’t Make Me Smile heart wrenching novel, weaves together diverting anecdotes about her endearingly eccentric brother with her reactions, and those of her parents, to his death in a bicycle accident at the age of 12. The genius of this novel is Park’s ability to make the events excruciatingly real while entirely avoiding the mawkish; likable Phoebe’s frank, at times even funny narration will leave readers feeling as though they’ve known the girl and Mick for a very long time. Park’s ability to convey so affectingly both the individual and collective pain of this family’s members is remarkable. She focuses on small moments the father closing the door to Mick’s room upon returning from the hospital; the mother covering her ears because she cannot bear Phoebe’s talk about her brother. But the novel has another crucial dimension in that it stresses the importance of wearing bike helmets. Midway through the story, in response to Phoebe’s misplaced sense of guilt, Phoebe’s father introduces the subject: ‘He heaved a God awful sigh and whispered, ‘If only I had made him wear his helmet.” The message is skillfully reprised toward the conclusion, in a powerful scene in which Phoebe overcomes her own pain and anger to participate in a school assembly on bicycle safety. An author’s note at the end reinforces the message. To Park’s great credit, the lesson never dominates the story reads not as a cautionary tale, but as a full fledged and fully convincing drama. Ages 8 12. Copyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Psssst!It’s Me…the Bogeyman

It’s the Bogeyman, and he’s stew spewin’, gravel chewin’ mad. He’s tired of all the nonsense people say about him. He doesn’t say BOO that’s a baby word. The Graduation of Jake Moon

Life hasn’t been the same for Jake Moon since his grandfather, Skelly, got Alzheimer’s disease. At first Jake thought, no big deal, it was just a disease that made old people forget where they put their car keys. But he was wrong. It is a big deal. A very big deal. For one thing, he can’t invite friends over because Skelly might do something embarrassing like tell them to zipper their ‘briskets,’ or Jake might reach into the freezer for a can of frozen orange juice and find Skelly’s frozen pajamas there instead. He used to love spending time with his grandfather…
but now he is mostly stuck fastening the Velcro on Skelly’s sneakers, or wiping rice off his chin. It’s like all of a sudden he’s the grown up, and Skelly’s the kid. How can the one person Jake could always count on be fading as fast as well, as the moon. Barbara Park, one of today’s most popular and versatile authors, has created a funny, honest, and unforgettable portrait of a boy struggling to understand this debilitating disease and graduate to a more sympathetic and accepting relationship with his beloved grandfather.
