Dayton Ward Books Overview

The Last World War

It started small, with an unprepared band of Marine reservists encountering deadly extraterrestrial visitors in the backwoods of Missouri. But this fatal First Contact rapidly escalates into a global crisis as mankind discovers that two warring species of aliens have invaded our world through a network of hidden interdimensional portals. The apocalyptic conflict between the hastily labeled ‘Blues’ and ‘Grays’ has already devastated their home planet. Now Earth has become the final battleground in a cataclysmic war whose origins arebarely understood. Forced into a hasty alliance with the alien Blues, humanity has no choice but to brave the awesome Gray onslaught in every corner of the Earth. From the mean streets of Atlanta to the mountains of Afghanistan, from Washington, D.C., to the alien’s war torn homeworld, all of humanity must unite to survive.

Counterstrike

From acclaimed author Dayton Ward, a continuation of the thrilling interplanetary struggle for survival first chronicled in The Last World War.

The Genesis Protocol

Resident Evil meets Jurassic Park. Science has developed a contained, man made ecosystem inhabited by an intricate array of bizarre, deadly lifeforms unlike anything else on earth. What could possibly go wrong?

Foundations, Book 1 (With: Kevin Dilmore)

The first full length novel starring the Starfleet Corps of Engineers! Now it can be told: The origin of the S.C.E.! In the twenty fourth century, the U.S.S. da Vinci and its S.C.E. team led by Commander Sonya Gomez roam the galaxy, solving the technical problems of the universe in a state of the art ship. But the road to the da Vinci was a difficult one, as the S.C.E. had to go through its share of growing pains back in the twenty third century…
. Even as the da Vinci spearheads a dramatic rescue of a runaway vessel, Captain Montgomery Scott recalls his younger days as the chief engineer of the U.S.S. Enterprise under Captain Kirk and his own encounters with a much different Corps of Engineers. From the edge of the Romulan Neutral Zone, to the planet Beta III in the wake of the Landru computer, to the uncharted regions of deep space, Scotty joins forces with the battered old U.S.S. Lovell to bring the S.C.E. into the future!

Enterprise: The First Adventure (By:Vonda N. McIntyre)

James T. Kirk is the youngest man to be promoted to the rank of captain in Federation history. His crew consists of a first officer who finds him impetuous; a chief engineer who finds him arrogent; a chief medical officer who finds him trifling; and a helmsman who wants a transfer. But the young crew, which would later become the legendary space explorers, quickly puts aside their differences when a monstrous starship appears on their nascent flight path.

Strangers from the Sky (By:)

In the twenty first centruy humanity has united after countless years of warfare, and turns toward the stars. But when an alien spacecraft crashlands in the South Pacific bearing visitors from another world, the Vulcans, Earth must decide whether to extend the hand of friendship, or the fist of war. In the distant future, horrible dreams torment Admiral James T. Kirk, dreams prompted by his reading of Strangers From the Sky, a book about that historic first contact. He dreams of an alternate reality where he somehow changed the course of history, and destroyed the Federation before it began.

Confronting the consequences of those actions, Kirk, Spock, and McCoy also face choices that will decide the fate of a civilization, and which may change them forever.

The Case of the Colonist’s Corpse (By:)

Now, once again, it’s SAM COGLEY FOR THE DEFENSE!

The planet Aneher II sits in the middle of the Neutral Zone, and neither the Klingon Empire nor the Federation can claim it. Under the terms of the Organian Peace Treaty, any such contested colony world will go to the party Federation or Klingon which shows it can best develop the planet.

At first the two colonies live in peace, but it’s a fragile peace, one shattered when Administrator Daniel Latham, the head of the Federation colony, is found murdered, and Commander Mak’Tor, the head of the Klingon colony, is found crouched over Latham’s body, discharged phaser still hot in his hand.

When Lieutenant Areel Shaw of Starfleet is assigned to prosecute Mak’Tor, Sam Cogley volunteers to defend the accused Klingon. But when Cogley’s own investigation provides the prosecution with its key piece of evidence and his courtroom tactics unexpectedly backfire, can even the galaxy’s most brilliant defense attorney win the day in…

Troublesome Minds (By:Dave Galanter)

First contact becomes an interstellar incident when the Starship Enterprise responds to a distress call from an unknown ship and saves the life of a man left to die by his own people. Berlis, member of a telepathic species calling themselves the Isitri, claims not to know why those from his homeworld want him dead. Captain James T. Kirk wants to believe him, but the damage is done: the Enterprise can neither leave the stranger to die nor turn him over to those who would kill him.

Berlis seems harmless, but his people say he cannot live among them: his telepathy is so strong that their wills are subsumed to his. The same fear that compels the Isitri to seek the death of one of their own drives the neighboring Odib people toward genocide. For every time a ‘troublesome mind’ dominates the Isitri, the Odib pay the price in their own blood.

With Spock becoming erratic under Berlis’s influence, and the Isitri begging Kirk to allow them to destroy the man who threatens their existence, matters take a disastrous turn when Berlis makes his way back to Isitra…
and an entire world falls to his whims.

Unspoken Truth (By:)

A social experiment was conceived. Its goal was to breed the best, the brightest, the most malleable and most loyal soldiers to ever serve. To this end, the Romulan Empire used its own children, blinded by the belief that anything that would bring glory to the praetor was justified. And when the winds of politics changed, these children were abandoned, left to die on a world so horrifying that it was dubbed by those who dared to cling to life Hellguard. One wild child, Saavik, was rescued by Spock. He took the half Vulcan, half Romulan child home to his parents, knowing that if anyone could reach and rescue Saavik, it was them. Now a Starfleet officer, Saavik has striven to honor her mentor and her Vulcan heritage. But recent events have shaken her. Left behind on Vulcan while the rest of the Enterprise crew goes to face court martial for stealing and destroying their ship, the young science officer is adrift when two men from her past confront her. Tolek, another Hellguard survivor, tells Saavik that the survivors are being killed one by one and only they can discover who and why. That Which Divides

Located in an area of non aligned space near Federation and Romulan territory, the Kondaii system is home to a unique stellar phenomenon: a spatial rift that opens every three years in proximity to the system’s sole inhabited planet. Only during this brief period is communication possible with the small, mineral rich planetoid inside the rift. The local population has established a mining colony on this planetoid, and for the limited du ration that the rift is open, a massive interplanetary operation is set into motion: ferrying mineral ore to the home planet while simultaneously transferring personnel and replenishing essential supplies and equipment everything necessary to sustain the colony before it once again enters forced isolation. While studying the rift, the science vessel U.S.S. Huang Zhong is severely damaged and crash lands on the planetoid. After the Starship Enterprise arrives to conduct rescue operations, evidence quickly points to the rift s artificial nature. It is a feat far beyond the capacity of the local inhabitants, and presents an alluring mystery for Captain James T. Kirk and his crew. It also attracts the attention of the Romulans, who are most interested in studying and perhaps seizing this supposed advanced technology by any means necessary.

Glass Empires (With: Greg Cox)

There are moments glimpsed only in shadow, where darkness rules and evil incarnate thrives. You hope against hope that in your lifetime, evil is relegated to the shadows. But what if it wasn’t? What if you lived in a universe where your life was measured only by what you could do for the Empire? What would you do to survive? Would you sell your soul to free yourself? If you were offered the chance to rule, would you seize it? If you could free your universe from the darkness but only at the cost of your life, would you pay that price? Star Trek: Enterprise She seized power in a heartbeat, daring to place herself against all the overlords of the Empire. Empress Hoshi Sato knows the future that could be; now all she has to do is make sure it never happens. For her to rule, she must hold sway not only over the starship from the future but also over her warlords, the resistance, and her Andorian husband. As quickly and brutally as Hoshi seized power, imperial rule is taken from her. Her only chance to rule again is to ally herself with a lifelong foe, and an alien. Star Trek One man can change the future, but does he dare? Spock, intrigued by the vision of another universe’s Federation, does what no Vulcan, no emperor, has ever done: seize power in one blinding stroke of mass murder. And at the same instant he gains imperial power, Spock sows the seeds for the Empire’s downfall. Is this a form of Vulcan madness, or is it the coolly logical plan of a man who knows the price his universe must pay for its freedom? Star Trek: The Next Generation Humanity is a pitiful collection of enslaved, indentured, and abused peoples. No one dares to question the order, except at peril of their lives. One man survives by blinding himself to the misery around him. However, Jean Luc Picard resists, just once. And in that one instant he unlocks a horror beyond the tyranny of the Alliance. Can a man so beaten down by a lifetime of oppression stop the destruction?

Enterprise are summoned to Vulcan when its people consider seceding from the Federation and returning to their isolationist ways. Vulcan’s savage history becomes fully revealed as Spock, his father Sarek, and Kirk work to preserve the planet’s future from anti Terran factions with hidden agendas. The crisis is twofold for the half human Spock should Vulcan secede, he will be required to resign from Starfleet and return home, or forever sever ties with his homeworld. Imzadi II: Triangle (By:Peter David)

Even in the 24th century, three is definitely a crowd. Imzadi: to the people of the planet Betazed, including Counselor Deanna Troi of the Starship Enterprise , it means ‘beloved’ and denotes a special closeness that can never be truly broken. Or can it? In his acclaimed earlier novel, Imzadi, bestselling author Peter David explored the special bond between Deanna Troi and Commander William T. Riker. It revealed new facets of their long and intimate relationship and put that bond to its ultimate test in a powerful and unforgettable story that remains one of the most popular Star Trek adventures ever published. Imzadi was a New York Times bestseller in both hardcover and paperback. Now David examines the heart of Deanna Troi from an altogether different perspective, as he reveals for the first time the full story of Troi’s troubled romance with Lieutenant Commander Worf. At first glance, they cannot be more different. She is an empath, gentle and acutely sensitive to the needs and feelings of others. He is a fierce Klingon warrior, dedicated to a harsh and warlike code of honor. Brought together, however, by a common need to care for Alexander, Worf’s troubled, motherless son, they discover hidden reserves of courage and compassion within each other. Soon mutual respect leads to much stronger emotions as they embark on an unexpected courtship, much to the surprise and discomfort of William Riker. But does Worf’s future truly lie with Deanna…

The Valiant (By:Michael Jan Friedman)

Three hundred years ago, the S.S. Valiant was destroyed during an ill fated attempt to cross the legendary Galactic Barrier. Starfleet had always assumed that the Valiant had perished with all hands aboard, until a pair of unusual humanoids arrive at Starbase 209, claiming to be the descendants of a handful of Valiant survivors who found refuge on an M Class planet beyond the Barrier. Even more shocking, the visitors warn that a hostile alien species, the Nuyyad, are preparing to invade our galaxy. Uncertain of how much of the strangers’ story to believe, Starfleet orders the U.S.S. Stargazer to investigate at once. Lieutenant Commander Jean Luc Picard is second officer on the Stargazer. A young man who has yet to command a vessel of his own, he soon develops a special bond with one of the visitors, a strikingly beautiful woman who has inherited mysterious psychic abilities from her alleged Starfleet ancestors. But can Picard truly trust her? His doubts deepen when the Stargazer is ambushed by Nuyyad warships, leaving the captain dead and the first officer incapacitated. Picard suddenly finds himself in command and facing immediate danger. Trapped on the wrong side of the Barrier, cut off from Starfleet, he must now rely on questionable allies and a crew uncertain of his abilities. And not only the Stargazer, but perhaps the entire Federation, may depend on the decisions he must make. The Valiant is a gripping saga that explores an untold chapter in the life of Jean Luc Picard and reveals the making of a captain!

Death in Winter (By:Michael Jan Friedman)

Long before Captain Jean Luc Picard took command of the legendary Starship Enterprise, he fell deeply and hopelessly in love with Doctor Beverly Crusher. Though, for one reason or another, Picard never acted on his feelings, he found a measure of contentment as Beverly’s close friend, colleague, and daily breakfast partner. But when Doctor Crusher leaves her position on the Enterprise to become the chief medical officer of Starfleet, the brightest light in Picard’s life is taken from him. And he has hardly resigned himself to his loss when he learns that Beverly has been declared missing in action on a distant planet and presumed dead. Kevratas is a bleak, frozen world on the far side of the Romulan Neutral Zone where the Federation has become the plague ravaged natives’ only real hope of survival and freedom. Starfleet has no recourse but to send in another team to try to save the Kevrata and Picard is the natural choice. Critical to the success of his mission are two colleagues who served under him when he commanded the Starship Stargazer Pug Joseph, a man with a past to live down, and Doctor Carter Greyhorse, who has served time for attempted murder as well as a Romulan who left his people years earlier and never expected to return. Together, they follow the trail of Beverly Crusher to Kevratas, determined to succeed where the doctor failed. On the Romulan homeworld, meanwhile, the political vacuum created by the demise of Praetor Shinzon has been filled by his staunchest supporter, Senator Tal’aura. But there are those who oppose her, including Commander Donatra and the warbird fleets under her command, because of the way Tal’aura has mishandled rebellions on the Empire’s subject worlds. And one rebellion in particular; the movement for self determination on frigid Kevratas. So begins a desperate struggle not only for the freedom of the long oppressed Kevrata but also for the soul of the Romulan Empire. Before it’s over, destinies will be forged and shattered, the Empire will be shaken to its ancient foundations, and Jean Luc Picard’s life will be changed…
forever.

The Sky’s the Limit (By:Marco Palmieri)

Taking its title from the final words spoken by Captain Jean Luc Picard in the series finale, The Sky’s the Limit is a collection of brand new original stories spanning and celebrating the entire twenty year history of the most popular and successful Trek series of all. Stories by a variety of authors some old favourites, some new set during the events of the television series give the authentic feel of a newly discovered ‘missing season’ of Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Q & A (By:Keith R.A. DeCandido)

Nearly two decades ago, Jean Luc Picard took command of the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC 1701 D. The captain knew it was an honor without equal. His new command bore the name of Enterprise. The people who had commanded other like named starships had gone down in Starfleet’s annals. Some officers would be intimidated, but they would not have been given command of Enterprise.

On her first mission, the Enterprise was sent to Farpoint Station. A simple, straightforward investigation. Perfect for a crew that had never served together. Then there was Q. An omnipotent lifeform that seemed bent on placing obstacle after obstacle in the ship’s and in particular in Picard’s way. And it hadn’t ended with that first mission. When he was least expected, Q would appear. Pushing, prodding, testing. At times needling captain and crew with seemingly silly, pointless, and maddening trifles. Then it would turn all too serious, and the survival of Picard’s crew was in Q’s hands.

Why was it today that Picard was remembering the day he took command of the Enterprise D? Now he commanded a new ship, the Enterprise E. His crew was different. There was nothing about Gorsach that in the least resembled Farpoint. But Picard couldn’t shake the feeling that something all too familiar was going on. All too awful. All too Q.

Before Dishonor (By:Peter David)

An enemy so intractable that it cannot be reasoned with. The entire race thinks with one mind and strives toward one purpose: to add our biological distinctiveness to their own and wipe out individuality, to make every living thing Borg. In over two centuries, the Federation has never encountered a greater threat. Twice Starfleet assembled and threw countless starships to stand against them. The Borg were stopped, the price paid in blood. Humanity breathed a sigh of relief, assuming it was safe. And with the destruction of the transwarp conduits, the Federation believed that the killing blow had finally been struck against the Borg. Driven to the point of extinction, the Borg continue to fight for their very existence, for their culture. They will not be denied. They must not be stopped. The old rules and assumptions regarding how the Collective should act have been dismissed. Now the Borg kill first, assimilate later. When the Enterprise manages to thwart them once again, the Borg turn inward. The dark places that even the drones never realized existed are turned outward against the enemy they have never been able to defeat. What is revealed is the thing that no one believed the Borg could do.

Greater Than the Sum (By:Christopher L. Bennett)

The Starship Rhea has discovered a cluster of carbon planets that seems to be the source of the quantum energies rippling through a section of space. A landing party finds unusual life forms inhabiting one of the planets. One officer, Lieutenant T’Ryssa Chen a half Vulcan makes a tenuous connection with them. But before any progress can be made, the Rhea comes under attack from the Einstein a Starfleet vessel now controlled by the Borg. The landing party can only listen in horror as their comrades are assimilated. The Borg descend to the planet, and just as Chen accepts that she will be assimilated, the lieutenant is whisked two thousand light years away. A quantum slipstream instantaneous transportation is controlled by these beings in the cluster, and in the heart of the cluster there is now a Borg ship. Cut off from the rest of the Borg collective, the Einstein cannot be allowed to rejoin it. For the sake of humanity, the Borg cannot gain access to quantum slipstream technology. Starfleet Command gives Captain Picard carte blanche: do whatever he must to help the beings in the cluster, and stop the Einstein no matter the cost.

A Time to Be Born (By:John Vornholt)

On the cusp of their epic battle with Shinzon, many of Captain Jean Luc Picard’s long time crew were heading for new assignments and new challenges. Among the changes were William Riker’s promotion to captain and his new command, Riker’s marriage to Counselor Deanna Troi, and Dr. Beverly Crusher’s new career at Starfleet Medical. But the story of what set them on a path away from the Starship Enterprise has never been told. UNTIL NOW. The site of one of the Dominion War’s fiercest battles, the Rashanar Sector now contains a vast interstellar graveyard littered with the lifeless hulks of hundreds of devastated starships. The explosive destruction of so many varied warp drives has severely distorted the space time continuum in this region, resulting in dangerous unleashed energies and bizarre gravitational anomalies. The Enterprise has been assigned to patrol the perimeter of the danger zone, while other vessels carry out the difficult and highly hazardous task of retrieving the bodies of the dead from the wrecked warships. To some alien races, the former battleground is hallowed space. To others, including the rapacious Androssi, it is a scavenger’s paradise, ripe for salvage. None expect this ship’s graveyard to hold a deadly secret that will force the android Data to make a heart wrenching decision about the path his life will take and that will endanger not only the Enterprise, but Picard’s future in Starfleet.
