Charles Kingsley Books Overview

The Saint’s Tragedy

The writer of this play does not differ with his countrymen generally, as to the nature and requirements of a Drama. He has learnt from our Great Masters that it should exhibit human beings engaged in some earnest struggle, certain outward aspects of which may possibly be a spectacle for the amuseme*nt of idlers, but which in itself is for the study and the sympathy of those who are struggling themselves.

Yeast

This little tale was written between two and three years ago, in the hope that it might help to call the attention of wiser and better men than I am, to the questions which are now agitating the minds of the rising generation, and to the absolute necessity of solving them at once and earnestly, unless we would see the faith of our forefathers crumble away beneath the combined influence of new truths which are fancied to be incompatible with it, and new mistakes as to its real essence.

Westward Ho!

ALL who have travelled through the delicious scenery of North Devon must needs know the little white town of Bideford, which slopes upwards from its broad tide river paved with yellow sands, and many arched old bridge where salmon wait for autumn floods, toward the pleasant upland on the we3t. Above the town the hills close in, cushioned with deep oak woods, through which juts here and there a crag of fern fringed slate; below they lower, and open more and more in softly rounded knolls, and fertile squares of red and green, till they sink into the wide expanse of hazy flats, rich salt marshes, and rolling sand hills, where Tor ridge joins her sister Taw, and both together flow quietly toward the broad surges of the bar, and the everlasting thunder of the long Atlantic swell. Pleasantly the old town stands there, beneath its soft Italian sky, fanned day and night by the fresh ocean breeze, which forbids alike the keen winter frosts, and the fierce thunderTable of Contents Introductionix; chapter; I How Mr Oxenham saw tiie White Bird i II How Amyas Came Home the First Time 27; III Of Two Gentlemen of Wales, and how they; Hunted with the Hounds, and yet Ran with tiie Deer73; IV The Two Ways of Being Crost in Love 99 V Clovelly Court in the Olden Time135; VI The Combes of the Far West172; VII, The True and Tragical History of Mr John; Oxexham of Plymouth184; VIH How the Noble Brotherhood of the Rose was; Founded245; IX How Amyas Kept his Christmas Day 270 X How the Mayor op Bideford Baited his Hook; with his Own Flesh320; XI How Eustace Leigh Met the Pope’s Lecate 336 XII How Bideford Bridge Dined at Annery; House361; XIZ1 How the Golden Hind Came Home Again 400 XIV How Salvation Yeo Slew the King of the; Gubbings413; XV How Mr John Brimulecomde Understood the; Nature of an Oath443About the Publisher Forgotten Books is a publisher of historical writings,

The Water Babies

1907. The Water Babies was an exceptionally popular fantasy serialized in Macmillan’s Magazine. It is the story of Tom, a young boy who is a chimney sweep employed by the brutal bully Mr. Grimes. Falling down a chimney, Tom finds himself in the presence of a girl called Ellie. Her cleanliness and neatness makes Tom aware for the first time of his own dirty blackened body. He is chased out of Ellie’s house and falls into the river where he enters a magical underwater world and becomes a water baby. Here we meet the caddis fly, the salmon and other creatures that teach Tom morality. Most readers, however, will be carried away by the fantasy and its sense of hope and possibility in life. The famous characters of Mrs. Doasyouwouldbedoneby and Mrs. Bedonebyasyoudid appear in the story, and Kingsley portrays the water world in a consistently vivid and exciting manner. ORG St. Paphnutius used to tell a story which may serve as a fit introduction to this book. It contains a miniature sketch, not only of the social state of Egypt, but of the whole Roman Empire, and of the causes which led to the famous monastic movement in the beginning of the fifth century after Christ. Now Paphnutius was a wise and holy hermit, the Father, Abba, or Abbot of many monks; and after he had trained himself in the desert with all severity for many years, he besought God to show him which of His saints he was like. And it was said to him, ‘Thou art like a certain flute player in the city.’ Then Paphnutius took his staff, and went into the city, and found that flute player. But he confessed that he was a drunkard and a profligate, and had till lately got his living by robbery, and recollected not having ever done one good deed. Nevertheless, when Paphnutius questioned him more closely, he said that he recollected once having found a holy maiden beset by robbers, and having delivered her, and brought her safe to town. And when Paphnutius questioned him more closely still, he said he recollected having done another deed.

Excerpt from book: at first in vain, to fix our eyes on some one dominant or typical form, while every form was clamoring, as it were, to be looked at, and a fresh Dryad gazed out of every bush, and with wooing eyes asked to be wooed again. The first two plants, perhaps, we looked steadily at were the Ipo moea pes caprae, lying along the sand in straight shoots thirty feet long, and growing longer, we fancied, while we looked at it, with large bilobed green leaves at every joint, and here and there a great purple convolvulus flower; and next, what we knew at once for the ‘shore grape.’ We had fancied it and correctly to be a mere low bushy tree with roundish leaves. But what a bush ! with drooping boughs, arched over and through each other, shoots already six feet long, leaves as big as the hand shining like dark velvet, a crimson midrib down each, and tiled over u, aj. eaeh other ‘ imbricated,’ as the botanists would say, in that fashion which gives its peculiar solidity and richness of light and shade to the foliage of an old sycamore; and among these noble shoots and noble leaves, pendent every where, long, tapering spires of green grapes. This shore grape, which the West Indians esteem as we might a bramble, we found to be, without exception, the most beautiful broad leaved plant which we had ever seen. Then we admired the Frangipani,f a tall and almost leafless shrub with thick fleshy shoots, bearing, in this species, white flowers, which have the fragrance peculiar to certain white blossoms, to the jessamine, the tuberose, the orange, the Gardenia, the night blooming Ce rens; then the Cacti and aloes; then the first cocoa nut, with its last year’s leaves pale yellow, its new leaves deep Coccoloha uvifern. t Plnmieria. preen, and its trunk ringing, when struck, like metal; then t…

Excerpt from book: 110 PROCLUS THE LAST GREAT ALEXANDRIAN. the accidents of brute matter, and a part of that nature which is born to die. The culmination of all this confusion we see in Proclus. The unfortunate Hypatia, who is the most important personage between him and lamblichus, has left no writings to our times; we can only judge of her doctrine by that of her instructors and her pupils. Proclus was taught by the men who had heard her lecture ; and the golden chain of the Platonic succession descended from her to him. His throne, however, was at Athens, not at Alexandria. After the murder of the maiden philosopher, Neoplatonism prudently retired to Greece. But Proclus is so essentially the child of the Alexandrian school, that we cannot pass him over. Indeed, according to M. Cousin, as I am credibly informed, he is the Greek philosopher; the flower and crown of all its schools; in whom, says the learned Frenchman, ‘ are combined, and from whom shine forth, in no irregular or uncertain rays, Orpheus, Pythagoras, Plato, Aristotle, Zeno, Plotinus, Porphyry, and lamblichus;’ and who ‘ had so comprehended all religions in his mind, and paid them such equal reverence, that he was, as it were, the priest of the whole universe ! ‘ THE MODERN ADMIRERS. 117 I have not the honour of knowing much of M. Cousin’s works. I never came across them but on one small matter of fact, and on that I found him copying at second hand an anachronism which one would have conceived palpable to any reader of the original authorities. This is all I know of him, saving these his raptures over Proclus, of which I have quoted only a small portion, and of which I can only say, in Mr. Thomas Carlyle’s words, ‘ What things men will worship, in their extreme need!’ Other moderns, however, have expressed their admir…

Madam How and Lady Why

Excerpt from book: CHAPTER IIL VOLCANOS. V/OLJ want to know why the Spaniards in Peru and Ecuador should have expected an earthquake. Because they had had so many already. The shaking of the ground in their country had gone on perpetually, till they had almost ceased to care about it, always hoping that no very heavy shock would come; and being, now and then, terribly mistaken. For instance, in the province of Quito, in the yeai 1797, from thirty to forty thousand people were killed at once by an earthquake. One would have thought that warning enough : but the warning was not taken: and now, this very year, thousands more have been killed in the very same country, in the very same way. They might have expected as much. For theii towns are built, most of them, close to volcanos some of the highest and most terrible in the world. And wherever there are volcanos there will be earthquakes. You may have earthquakes without volcanos, now and then; but volcanos without earthquakes, seldom or never. How does that come to pass? Does a volcano make earthquakes? No; we may rather say that earthquakes are trying to make volcanos. For volcanos are the holes which the steam underground has burst open that it may escape into the air above. They are the chimneys of the great blastfurnaces underground, in which Madam How pounds and melts up the old rocks, to make them into new ones, and spread them out over the land above. And are there many volcanos in the world? You have heard of Vesuvius, of course, in Italy; and Etna, in Sicily; and Hecla, in Iceland. And you have heard, too, of Kilauea, in the Sandwich Islands, and of Pele’s Hair the yellow threads of lava, like fine spun glass, which are blown from off its pools of fire, and which the Sandwich Islanders believed to be the hair of a go…

Discipline: And Other Sermons

We hold that because we are not under the law, but under grace, there is no condemnation for sin at least for the special sort of sin which happens to be in fashion, which is now a days the sin of making money at all risks. We hold that there is one law of morality for the kingdom of heaven, and another for the kingdom of mammon. Therefore we hold, more and more, that when money is in question anything and everything is fair. There are we have reason to know it just now but too well thousands who will sell their honour, their honesty, yea, their own souls, for a few paltry pounds, and think no shame.
