Steve Vance Books Overview

The Hyde Effect

In the hills of Southern California, a series of violent and gruesome deaths occurs within the space of a few hours. The murders are attributed to some unknown, savage animal. Precisely one month later, college student Meg Talley is attacked in the same manner. Astonishingly, she survives, but when she insists that her assailant was a hideous monster like creature, she is called hysterical. Journalist Douglas Morgan, private eye Nick Grundel, and horror novelist Blake Corbett, however, have each theorized that the mangling, incredible though it seems, might be the work of a werewolf. Now they team up with Meg to puruse an intensive investigation. When a suspect is apprehended and confined, the four are on hand. But neither skeptics nor believers are prepared for the bone chilling terror and cataclysmic violence that will be unleashed in the night of the January full moon…

The Abyss

ABANDON HOPE, ALL YE WHO ENTER YORK HOUSE

It was such a lively old house, elegant and airy, but it had one minor flaw. The people who checked in, never checked out alive.

Undaunted by rumors of evil, Cathy Lockwood walked right into the festering heart of the crumbling mansion, determined to find her brother. She was sure he was alive in some form and she swore she’d rip York House apart, timber by timber, to find him.

She thought nothing human or inhuman could scare her away until she confronted the horrifying secret that waited for her in the dark, fetid baseme*nt. The she could scream to high heaven, but only hell would hear her.

Spook

Better to leave Spook alone, advise the townspeople of Sturgis, Georgia, an old mill town at the foot of the Appalachian Mountains. Or else Spook might just reciprocate!

The Asgard Run

Roger Griffin’s lifetime dream lay before him. He stood within an immense interstellar vessel that had lain beneath the Wyoming mountains for millennia. It had remained a virtually impenetrable fortress to the scientific teams that prowled its two mile long exterior until they managed to pry open the door. Then the dream of scientific discovery became a horrific nightmare as an earthquake awakened the long dormant brain of the malfunctioning spacecraft and rocked the door shut. Griffin and his fellow survivors frantically tried to escape, but the ship’s computer took steps to rescue itself and exterminate the humans in board. Suddenly, the newly awakened control room displayed a clock for its terrified inhabitants to see. Its lights blinked in and off, but the message was clear: Six hours until lift off. Six hours to live. Six hours to die.

Shapes

A CIRCLE OF DEATH.

The Shapeshifter stalked the moonlit night, thirsting for blood, hungering for the flesh of new victims. Once a man, now a grotesque monster, he left behind him a bloody trail of mangled corpses. Before him lay only more death.

A RING OF MADNESS.

They were the believers, men and women sworn to exterminate the beast from the face of the earth. But all their strength could not prevent the hunters from becoming the hunted. For soon they were trapped in a terrifying game that led not to death but to everlasting pain and eternal hell. Their only hope for survival was to succumb to the powers of the shape shifter they had once sought to destroy.

Pound for Pound

Seventeen year old Megan Thornton, with her aging father, Clay, works as an independent truck driver in contemporary Southern California. She becomes acquainted with 17 year old Gorden Elder, a drifter, when he happens along a highway in time to forestall a hijacking attempt of her truck during a nighttime run from San Diego to Mitford, the big town small city in which much of the novel takes place. Because of a past experience, Megan is reluctant to get close to anyone outside of her family, and although she is grateful to Gordon for his intervention, she refuses to respond beyond the impersonal thank you. Megan is also very suspicious of her employer for the last several years, David Colby, head of the Golden West Trucking Company. She feels that the pedantic and extremely cold Colby is engaging in some sort of illegal activity. Her instincts are correct. Megan and Clay have been saving their money in order to move from Mitford and begin their lives anew. But through Colby’s manipulations Clay is arrested for a crime he did not commit. Megan, unaware of the real contents of her cargo, will be forced to drive a huge shipment of illegal materials to Colby’s contacts in Reno, Nevada. Once more Gordon appears on the scene. He uses his extraordinary abilities as a boxer to enter and win the local ‘Wild Man’ competition and presents Megan with enough money to pay off the damages Clay has been charged with, thus seeming to break Colby’s hold on the pair. But Colby’s machinations continue to work to get Megan to truck the delivery to Reno. With Gordon riding with her, and other legitimate truckers joining them in another loaded rig, the adventure kicks into high gear. Colby learns that the shipment has been tampered with and is now desperately trying to contact the rigs to get them back. Megan and the others are determined to complete the delivery. Colby sends out his henchmen, and there are confrontations on the road. There are surprises from more than one source, and one more important prize fight that Gordon must win.
