Alan Dean Foster Books Overview

The Tar-Aiym Krang

Moth was a beautiful planet, the only one with wings two great golden clouds suspended in space around it. Here was a wide open world for any venture a man might scheme. The planet attracted unwary travelers, hardened space sailors, and merchant buccaneers a teeming, constantly shifting horde that provided a comfortable income for certain quick witted fellows like Flinx and his pet flying snake Pip. With his odd talents, the pickings were easy enough so that Flinx did not have to be dishonest…
most of the time. In fact, it hardly seemed dishonest at all to steal a starmap from a dead body that didn’t really need it anymore. But Flinx wasn’t quite smart enough. He should have wondered why the body was dead in the first place…

Bloodhype

It caused instant addiction, followed by an excruciating slow death, and there was no known antidote. It was a killer. Supposedly the drug had been totally eradicated from the humanx galaxy years before. At least that’s what everyone thought. But somehow, mysteriously, that dreadful substance was back in circulation on Repler and threatening to wreak havoc throughout the known galaxy. Someone somewhere was secretly manufacturing Bloodhype, but nobody seemed to know where or who!

The End of the Matter

Accompanied by his faithful minidragon Pip and a most troublesome alien called Abalamahalamatandra Ab for short Flinx set out for Alaspin, the ruggedly primitive homeworld of his flying snake. There he hoped to find the giant man with the gold earring who somehow held the key to Flinx’s mysterious past and to the strange powers he possessed. Chasing down his heritage was trouble enough, but Flinx didn’t know what real trouble was until he realized that the Qwarm a deadly assassin squad were three steps behind him with a contract to kill. But the minidragon’s homeworld did not offer safety and Flinx had a terrible time just staying alive…
a matter complicated to no mean degree by a collapsar already set on an unstoppable death course across the galaxy!BONUS AUDIO: Includes an exclusive introduction written and read by author Alan Dean Foster.

Orphan Star

One man in the Universe holds the key to the mystery of Flinx’s past and that man is trying to kill him!It is a strange childhood for a kid, to be adopted by the restless Mother Mastiff and raised in the bustling marketplace of Drallar. Flinx never knew the mom and dad who abandoned him years ago. In fact, his birth has always been shrouded in mystery. But Flinx eventually discovers that his unknown parents have left him a curious legacy extraordinary mental powers that are both a marvelous gift and a dreaded curse. This double edged legacy will lead Flinx, along with his loyal protector, the mini dragon Pip, on a harrowing journey in search of the truth…
about who he is and where he comes from. It is a daring adventure that brings him to another world and into the clutches of one of the most evil and powerful men in the galaxy…
. Orphan Star is the newest addition to the Del Rey Imagine program, which offers the best in fantasy and science fiction for readers twelve and up. From the Trade Paperback edition.

For Love of Mother-Not

Flinx was just a freckle faced, red headed kid with green eyes and a strangely compelling stare when Mother Mastiff first saw him on the auctioneer’s block. One hundred credits, and he was hers. For years the old woman was his only family. She loved him, fed him, taught him everything she knew even let him keep the deadly flying dragon he called Pip. But when Mother Mastiff mysteriously disappears, Flinx tails her kidnappers on a dangerous journey. Across the forests and swamps of the winged world called Moth, their only weapons are Pip s venom…
and Flinx s unusual Talents.

Flinx in Flux

When Flinx, no stranger to galactic intrigue, found an unconscious woman on a riverbank deep in the jungles of Alaspin, he took it in stride. When he learned that the woman, Clarity Held, was a brilliant scientist abducted from a remote outpost on inhospitable Longtunnel by a group of fanatic assassins, he tried to help the beautiful Clarity back to her project. Unfortunately, the assassins were still at work. They would do anything to stop the research on Longtunnel and would kill anyone or anything that got in their way…

Mid-Flinx

Flinx: born in controversy as the product of illegal genetic experiments. Flinx: raised an orphan in the streets of Drallar on the planet Moth. Flinx: the extraordinary young man with a rare flying snake for a companion, always the inadvertent center of danger and galactic intrigue. Now in his twenties, and owner of a remarkable interstellar spacecraft, he wanted nothing more than to sink into obscurity, posing as a tourist on the backwater worlds of the Commonwealth. But even here he could not escape the attention of a rich local bully who was determined to acquire the minidrag Pip for his personal zoo. Flinx wanted only to avoid trouble, but where Flinx and Pip went, trouble followed. Flinx hoped to elude pursuit by fleeing randomly into uncharted space seemingly the only place he would find the peace he craved. Instead, he made one of the most startling discoveries of his life: a verdant planet covered by an immense jungle, miles deep, hosting an incredible variety of plant and animal life, all of it unknown and all of it deadly. But stranger still, Flinx found humans living there, the descendants of a lost colony ship from the earliest days of human expansion into space. These people called their home Midworld, for the middle levels of the jungle treetops where they lived. Flinx would need their help to survive in this wild and wonderful place, especially when his tenacious pursuers discovered his hiding place…

Reunion

The wait is over! At last, New York Times bestselling author Alan Dean Foster returns to his acclaimed Humanx universe, where a young human orphan called Flinx seeks to unlock the dangerous secrets of his past and the uncertain prospects of his future with the aid of the formidable minidrag known as Pip. Together, Flinx and Pip have roamed the galaxy on their quest for knowledge, finding friends and enemies along the way, and providing unforgettable memories for an ever growing legion of delighted fans. Now, with Reunion, Alan Dean Foster gives those fans what they’ve been clamoring for: the most mind bending Flinx and Pip adventure yet a roller coaster ride into the unknown, filled with wonder and humor…
and a host of deadly adversaries. It all starts innocently enough. Well, almost innocently. So what if Flinx uses his enhanced empathic abilities to finesse his way into a top secret security installation on Earth? Once there, he bamboozles a sophisticated AI program into releasing classified information about the Meliorare Society, the sect of renegade eugenicists whose experiments with human beings had horrified the civilized universe more than twenty years ago. After all, as one of the few Meliorare experiments to survive, Flinx has a right to know about his past. Especially since his telepathic powers seem to be evolving. The question is, evolving into what? The excruciating headaches afflicting Flinx with increasing frequency make him wonder if he will be alive to find out. But headaches are the least of his problems. For the information he uncovers leads Flinx into AAnn space, and the reptilian AAnn are more likely to eat human visitors than welcome them. Awaiting Flinx is a planet brim*ming with hidden dangers and astonishing discoveries. But nothing so dangerous, or so astonishing, as the unexpected return of an old enemy: an enemy as evil as she is beautiful…

Flinx Transcendent

From one of the most brilliant imaginations in science fiction comes Flinx Transcendent, Alan Dean Foster’s thrilling conclusion to the series that began over thirty five years ago the epic adventures of Flinx and his flying minidrag companion, Pip. Flinx is the only one with even the tiniest chance of stopping the evil colossus barreling in to destroy the Humanx Commonwealth and everything else in the Milky Way. With time running out, Flinx is a man in search of a solution and in search of himself. His efforts take him to the land of his mortal enemies, the bloodthirsty AAnn, where chances are excellent that Flinx s discovery and summary execution will eliminate all his demons and doubts in one masterstroke. The way Flinx is feeling, that might not be the worst imaginable end. After years of searching for his father, he finally has and must bear the truth. And now he must also seek out an ancient sentient weapons platform wandering around somewhere in the galaxy and then communicate with it, a powwow that could very well fry his already frazzled brain. Then there are the oblivion craving assassins determined to stop Flinx before he can prevent total annihilation. With a future that rosy, it s no surprise he s flirting with disaster. Still, Flinx is no quitter, and he s got something else going for him an uncanny ability to improvise and triumph or at least survive in impossible situations. He s certainly been through enough of them, and now he s going to need every ounce of that know how, because he s venturing to places where the laws of physics fear to tread, where no one s ever been, to do what no one s ever done, and where his deadliest enemy is so close it s invisible.

Midworld

Born was a child of the rain forest that covered Midworld, part of the primitive society that the peaceful jungle planet had sustained for hundreds of years. He was wise in the ways of his world, and he knew well the precarious natural balance that governed all things. Then one day the aliens came. Giants. They knew nothing of the Upper or Lower Hell and they cared less. Born had risked his life to save them, to guide them through the myriad tangled boughs, past unseen, unsuspected dangers lurking in the underbrush. But worse than their ignorance of how to survive, the aliens had plans for Midworld, plans that could utterly destroy the globe spanning forest that his people called home. As the days passed, Born realized his mistake. And as he had once hunted only to live, he knew now that he would be forced to live only to kill…

The Howling Stones

The newly discovered planet of Senisran was a veritable paradise. Its vast oceans were dotted with thousands of lush islands containing vast deposits of rare earths and minerals. But Senisran was also the Humanx Commonwealth’s problem child, for each island was inhabited by a different tribe of aboriginal natives whose customs and tribal rites varied from island to island. Each had to be negotiated with separately for mining rights, and the Commonwealth was locked in a race against the vicious AAnn Empire to secure those rights. Now the clans of the Parramat Archipelago on Senisran were resisting entreaties by the Commonwealth and AAnn alike. So, xenologist and first contact specialist Pulickel Tomochelor was dispatched from Earth to handle this sensitive and stubborn negotiation. More comfortable with aliens than with his own species, and confident in his extraordinary ability to communicate with them, Pulickel looked forward to a short assignment and a triumphant return to Earth. But he hadn’t counted on the incredible secret of Parramat: the strange green stones that the natives used to bless the crops, ensure plentiful fishing, heal the injured and ill, and control the weather. Within these stones lay an awesome technology the origin of which was lost in time, technology that had to be kept from the AAnn at any cost. In his previous travels around the planets of the Commonwealth, Pulickel had seen many wonders, but never any like this. And he had seen the effects of evil on both beings and planets, but he never expected to meet the very essence of evil face to face…
Enter the amazing world of the Humanx Commonwealth, the interstellar empire governed jointly by humans and insectoid Thranx aliens as New York Times bestselling author Alan Dean Foster continues the saga that began with For Love of Mother Not, The Tar Aiym Krang, and Orphan Star!

Drowning World

Alan Dean Foster doesn t just build worlds, he creates entire universes. Book by book, his star spanning saga of the Humanx Commonwealth has evolved into one of science fiction’s most notable achievements. Filled with rigorously imagined aliens and sophisticated cultures, spiced with humor and passion, and driven by relentless adventure and intrigue, Foster s remarkable Commonwealth series just keeps getting better. They call it the Drowning World. It is Fluva, a planet on the fringes of the Commonwealth where it rains torrentially, ceaselessly, and maddeningly for all but one month of the Fluvan year. Chief Administrator Lauren Matthias is fairly new to the position. Her primary goal: keeping Fluva s indigenous species, the warlike Sakuntala and immigrant species, the timid but hard working Deyzara, from annihilating one another. The wettest place on Fluva is Viisiiviisii, an immense, mostly unexplored jungle. Thanks to the endless rains and humid conditions, exotic animals and plants have thrived there, many of them deadly predators. Yet the same evolutionary process responsible for creating toxic creatures has made the jungle a treasure trove of undiscovered botanicals potentially useful in engineering everything from pharmaceuticals to perfumes. A man can get rich there. Or die trying. Bio prospector Shadrach Hasselemoga has come to the jungle to get rich if he survives the terrain once his sabotaged ship goes down. When a Sakuntala and a Deyzara are dispatched by Matthias to rescue the unfortunate soul, their ship crashes, too. Now, in order to survive, the three unlikely allies must do something that no one has ever done before: walk out of the Viisiiviisii. Meanwhile, in what pas*ses for civilization, long simmering tensions between Sakuntala and Deyzara erupt into violence, threatening Matthias s official position of neutrality and her life. Behind the violence, Matthias detects a mysterious presence, one related to Shadrach s disappearance. But how are the two related? The answer, when it comes, will send shock waves through the entire Commonwealth…
and beyond. From the Hardcover edition.

Quofum

Bestselling author Alan Dean Foster’s new adventure takes place in the amazing Humanx Commonwealth, home of the ever popular Pip & Flinx. Although the dynamic redhead and his daring minidrag do not appear in Quofum, this knockout thriller sets the stage for their explosive date with destiny in the duo s final climactic adventure, Flinx Transcendent. The mission to planet Quofum is supposed to be a quickie for Captain Boylan and his crew. Boylan is tasked with delivering four scientists two men, one woman, and one thranx to the unknown world, setting up camp while the experts investigate flora and fauna, then ferrying them safely home. The first surprise is that Quofum, which regularly slips in and out of existence on Commonwealth monitors, is actually there when Boylan and company arrive. The second surprise is more about what Quofum is not: The planet is not logical, ordered, or rational. The team encounters three intelligent, warring species some carbon based, others silicate based, all bizarre along with thousands of unique, often unclassifiable life forms. Quofum s wild biodiversity doesn t appear to be natural. But if it is by design, then by whose, and for what purpose? There are more revelations, more highly evolved species waiting to be identified, even tantalizing clues to a civilization light years ahead of the Commonwealth s. But the crew members are not ready for the real shockers, because none of them expect to find a killer in their midst, or to discover that their spaceship is missing and, with it, all means of communication. Of course, the marooned teammates know nothing about the Great Evil racing toward the galaxy, and they certainly have never heard of Flinx, the only person with half a chance to stop it. Nor do they know that Quofum could play a crucial role in defeating the all devouring monster from beyond. One thing the scientists do know, however, is how to ferret out the truth. But whether that will be enough to alter the course of the oncoming catastrophe is anyone s guess.

Into the Thinking Kingdoms

Bound by honor, Ehomba has traveled through many exotic and perilous lands on a quest to save a beautiful princess he has never met from the hands of the evil Hymneth the Possessed. Will they be able to rescue the princess and bring her safely home with their lives intact?

A Triumph of Souls

The bestselling author of The Dig & the Flinx series delivers the thrilling conclusion to his popular new epic fantasy trilogy, Journeys of the Catechist. /Content /EditorialReview EditorialReview Source Amazon. com Review /Source Content ‘The truth is a riddle wrapped in an enigma or sometimes in a nice piece of hot flat bread fresh from the oven. That’s my friend Etjole.’ So surmises the boisterous sword swinger Simna Ibn Sind, one of three fantastical companions that the seemingly simple Ejtole Ehomba has gathered in his wanderings through the three book Journeys of the Catechist series preceded by Into the Thinking Kingdoms and Carnivores of Light and Darkness Triumph of Souls concludes the series. But as every fan knows at times, unfortunately, to the point of eye rolling, the self effacing Ehomba only seems simple: Alan Dean Foster’s answer to Baron Von Munchhausen is a modest, humble sheperd who talks with dolphins, fights tornadoes, summons man eating sharks out of the air, and plays music that will make the snow dance. And that, predictably, is not the half of it.

Fulfilling the dying gasp request of Tarin Beckwith from book 1, Etjole is finally getting around to rescuing the Visioness Thermaryl of Laconda from the evil clutches of Hymneth the Possessed, a very disagreeable sorcerer type. Along with Simna and his two other companions, the big talking cat, Ahlitak, and the hulking man beast, Hunkapan Aub, Etjole dutifully heads west to rescue the damsel, but must first control the four winds, get his ship towed by a jet propelled Kraken for, literally, the price of a big cup of coffee, stare down skeletons, dupe demons, and all other sorts of such likable nonsense. Phylogenesis

With such classic novels as Orphan Star and The Tar Aiym Krang, New York Times bestselling author Alan Dean Foster has captivated readers with his brilliantly imagined Humanx Commonwealth, the interstellar empire where intelligent aliens and humans live side by side. Now Foster takes us back to the unplanned beginnings of this extraordinary alliance…
In the years after first contact, humans and the insect like Thranx agreed to a tentative sharing of ideas and cultures despite the ingrained repulsion they had yet to overcome. Mindful that one day they might need each other as allies, the leaders of the two species conceded that the only way to reach an accommodation was through a slow, lengthy process of limited contact. When the time was right, the leaders of both worlds would reveal to their respective peoples that a union with an alien race was indeed possible. However, they never planned for a chance meeting between a misfit artist and a petty thief. Desvendapur was a talented Thranx poet who was bored with his life and needed new inspiration for his work. Hearing a rumor that a secret alien contact project existed on his homeworld, he recklessly forged a new identity and headed off to find his muse. In a place unlike the familiar Hives of Willow Wane, Desvendapur ran into Cheelo Montoya, a small time criminal with big dreams of making a fast buck. But chance and circumstance tossed the con man and the mad poet together in what was to become a journey that would forever change their beliefs, their futures, and their worlds.

Dirge

Alan Dean Foster has written more than twenty novels set in the Humanx Commonwealth, an unforgettable world where humans, thranx, AAnn, and numerous other aliens live and work side by side. But the amicable relationships between species have always hung in a tenuous balance between distrust and diplomacy. Dirge is the second thrilling novel in The Founding of the Commonwealth, an adventure that delves deeper into the fragile early years when humans made first contact. In the second half of the twenty fourth century, diplomatic relations proceed cautiously between thranx and humans, who are slow to overcome their aversion to the insectlike beings. But the lowly thranx are nearly forgotten with the sudden discovery of an ideal planet to colonize Argus V and the startling appearance of a new race of space faring aliens. People are dazzled by the beautiful, glamorous pitar. Then tragedy strikes.A cargo ship making a routine delivery to Argus V finds a scene of grisly carnage has replaced the bustling new world. The entire human population 600,000 men, women, and children has been brutally slaughtered. Not one survivor or a single clue remains to identify the unseen executioners. Even the combined efforts of all alien species prove fruitless in the search for killers who have perpetrated planetary genocide on such a vast scale. But from a tiny inner moon of Argus V comes a faint, wavering signal and on that insignificant chunk of rubble lies the key to the crime. The cataclysm that follows is replete with shock and deadly consequences for thranx, pitar, and human alike. For their worlds will change forever by the colossal space battle that is both in their future and their destiny.

Diuturnity’s Dawn

In nearly two dozen novels about the Humanx Commonwealth, Alan Dean Foster has fascinated readers with his brilliantly imagined interstellar realm where humans, thranx, AAnn, and other species strive to work together to put the common good above selfish ends. But renewed efforts at cooperation prove that familiarity breeds contempt. Diuturnity’s Dawn is the third thrilling novel in The Founding of the Commonwealth, a spectacular space adventure that traces the perilous early years of this remarkable universe. From the beginning, while sharing the Orion Arm of the galaxy, contact between humankind and the thranx has been tenuous at best. Yet nearly a century after first contact, the likelihood of closer humanthranx relations is as far away as ever. Humans still find these insectlike beings physically repulsive, a distaste the thranx return in kind. At times the cordial veneer barely conceals the suspicion and distrust boiling just below the surface. Yet idealists on both sides refuse to surrender their dreams of achieving a thranxhuman alliance. Among the most dedicated are a minor diplomat named Fanielle Anjou and her thranx counterpart. Others intend to make sure such a liaison never comes to pass…
by any means necessary. For these xenophobes, the upcoming Humanx Inter Cultural Fair, the first wholly cross species event, is a hideous confirmation of their worst fears. Zealots on both sides vow it will be the last of its kind, no matter how many must die. In the coming conflagration Fanielle holds the key to triumph but only if she can outwit those desperate to silence her forever. Meanwhile, on a faraway planet, the duplicitous AAnn watch intently as archaeologists labor to discover what happened to an advanced human race that perished thousands of years ago. For the answers contain grave consequences for human, thranx, and AAnn alike…

Now this writer of bold imagination and stunning originality has created an electrifying space epic set in a universe at once strangely familiar and starkly terrifying. Familiar because the universe is ours; terrifying because the human condition might soon be…

The Candle of Distant Earth

From science fiction legend and New York Times bestselling author Alan Dean Foster, creator of the ever popular Pip and Flinx series, comes the climactic final novel in The Taken trilogy, his electrifying space epic about a man and his dog for whom the expression out of this world takes on a whole new meaning. Location is everything. In Chicago, Marcus Walker was a hotshot commodities broker. In the cargo hold of the alien Vilenjji spaceship, he and a laconic dog named George, who has been speech enhanced to increase his value, are just two more primitive creatures being shipped to the civilized part of the universe, where the market for cuddly extraterrestrial pets is busting wide open. Though Walker and George manage to escape, man and dog are far from overjoyed, being even farther from Earth billions of miles, in fact and without a clue as to whether the direction home is up, down, or sideways. Possessing universe level social skills, Walker becomes the leader of his own armada. Yet even a fleet commander is hard pressed to find a piece of space that no one’s ever heard of, much less cares to find. To make matters worse, it seems the Vilenjji are proving to be notoriously sore losers. Even if Walker does pull off the impossible and pinpoint his needle of a solar system in the universe haystack, there s a good chance that the unrelenting Vilenjji will get to him before he ever gets to Wrigley Field. Yep, it s a wide open universe out there, bursting with possibilities and Walker s going to get hit with all of them. From the Hardcover edition.

In a dark alley in Savannah, Whispr and Jiminy murder what they take to be a random tourist in order to amputate and then fence his sophisticated artificial hand. But the hapless victim also happens to be carrying an unusual silver thread that appears to be some kind of storage medium. Ever quick to scent potential profit, Whispr and Jiminy grab the thread as well. Chance later deposits a wounded Whispr at the clinic of Dr. Ingrid Seastrom. Things have not gone smoothly for Whispr since he acquired the mysterious thread. Powerful forces are searching for him, and Jiminy has vanished. All Whispr wants to do is sell the thread as quickly as he can. When he offers to split the profits with Ingrid in exchange for her medical services, she makes an astonishing discovery. So begins a unique partnership. Unlike Whispr, Ingrid is a natural, with no genetic or bodily alteration. She is also a Harvard educated physician, while Whispr s smarts are strictly of the street variety. The Chronicles of Riddick

Excerpt. Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. INo matter how long or how hard they strive, no matter how extensive their education as a species, no matter what they experience of the small heavens and larger hells they create for themselves, it seems that humans are destined to see their technological accomplishments always exceed their ability to understand themselves. Certainly there was no understanding, no meeting of the minds, on the world called Aquila Major. There was only the devastation of one mind set by another. Proof of it took the form of a statue fashioned of advanced, reinforced preformata resin. It was an imposing piece of work, for all that it had been reproduced by its originators on many other worlds. Too many other worlds, according to some. Not nearly enough, according to those who had put it in place, its massive footing firmly rammed into the resistant soil of Aquila Major. It was a Conquest Icon of the Necromongers. Over five hundred meters tall, it gaped openmouthed at the utter desolation and wreckage that spread outward from its base. Whether it was seen as wailing in despair at its surroundings or moaning in triumph depended on whether one was a surviving citizen of that world’s once splendid capital city, now reduced to waste and ruin, or a member of that peculiar space dwelling group who called themselves followers of the faith known as Necroism. They had been preparing for such moments for a very long time. They had burst out of the great darkness to impose themselves on the civilized worlds with a forcefulness and cool brutality that was as stunning in its single mindedness as it was in its efficiency. Aquila Major was not the first of their conquests, nor would it be the last. As long as there were worlds to be freed, as long as humans lived who dwelled in ignorance of their true destiny, the Necromongers would continue with their work. Unlike so much of the humankind who had spread explosively throughout the galaxy, the Necromongers were driven by genuine purpose beyond the need to merely exist. They believed fervently in their work, and went about it with a determination and competence that was breathtaking to behold. In the majority of cases, literally breathtaking. Furthermore, there was no meanness in them, no suggestion of brutality for its own sake or of sadism. Like all true believers since the beginning of time, they saw only good arising out of the destruction they inflicted. Everything they did was for the benefit of the destroyed, they knew. Nor was their great work devoid of irony. For it was the dead who triumphed by passing on, while only the most dedicated forced themselves to carry on the work by continuing to live until due time.

Depahli, the fabulously beautiful woman from the ‘untouchable class’ would die for him, just as surely as his father would like to kill him for shaming the very traditional family for such a relationship. Chalcedony ‘Chal’ Schneemann doesn’t want to kill Taneer, if he doesn’t have to, but it wouldn’t upset him terribly much if it came to it, and he’ll stop at nothing to recover the stolen property for the company that pays him very, very well to solve big problems discreetly and quickly. Sanjay Ghosh, a poor farmer turned merchant in the big city of Sagramanda would like to help Taneer unload his stolen items, for the $30 million dollars his 3 per cent fee is worth. Jena Chalmette, a crazy French woman pledged to Kali, simply wants to kill for the glory of her god, and she’s very good at it. Chief Inspector Keshu Singh would like to put this sword wielding serial killer away as quickly as possible before the media gets a hold of the story. Then there’s a man eating tiger, come in from the nearby jungle reserve and just looking for his next meal. A fast paced and gripping techno thriller set in an India just around the corner from today.

The Approaching Storm

Four Cassettes, 6 hrs. abridgedRead byIn the years since the events of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, the Republic has continued to crumble, and more and more, the Jedi are needed to help the galactic government maintain order. As Star Wars: Episode II opens, Obi Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker have just returned from a mission on a world called Ansion. Written by beloved Star Wars veteran Alan Dean Foster, and starring a new character from the upcoming movie, The Approaching Storm tells the story of that daring mission. The Republic is decaying, even under the leadership of Supreme Chancellor Palpatine, who was elected to save the galaxy from collapsing under the forces of discontent. On the tiny but strategic planet of Ansion, a powerful faction is on the verge of joining the growing secessionist movement. The urban dwellers wish to expand into the prairies outside their cities the ancestral territory of the fierce, independent Ansion nomads. If their demands are not met, they will secede an act that could jump start a chain reaction of withdrawal and rebellion by other worlds of the Republic. At the Chancellor’s request, the Jedi Council sends two Jedi Knights, Obi Wan Kenobi and Luminara Unduli, to resolve the conflict and negotiate with the elusive nomads. Undaunted, Obi Wan and Luminara, along with their Padawans Anakin Skywalker and Barriss Offee, set out across the wilderness. Many perils lie waiting to trap them. The Jedi will have to fulfill near impossible tasks, befriend wary strangers, and influence two great armies to complete their quest, stalked all the while by an enemy sworn to see the negotiations collapse and the mission fail…

Tatooine Ghost

Han Solo and Leia Organa take center stage, and stunning revelations from the past play a critical role in shaping the future, as the New York Times bestselling author of Star Wars: The New Jedi Order: Star by Star now turns to a crucial chapter in the classic Star Wars saga. The deaths of Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine, and victory at the Battle of Endor by no means spelled the end of the Empire. In the aftermath, the New Republic has faced a constant struggle to survive and grow. And now a new threat looms: a masterpiece of Alderaanian art lost in transit after the planet’s destruction has resurfaced on the black market. Offered at auction, it will command a handsome price…
but its greatest value lies in the vital secret it conceals the key to a code used to communicate with New Republic agents deep undercover within the Empire. Discovery of the key by Imperial forces would spell certain disaster. The only option is recovery and Han, Leia, Chewbacca, and C 3PO have been dispatched to Tatooine to infiltrate the auction. But trouble is waiting when they arrive: an Imperial Star Destroyer is orbiting Tatooine on the lookout for Rebels; a mysterious stranger at the auction seems to recognize Leia; and an Imperial officer s aggressive bidding for the Alderaanian painting could foil the Solos mission. When a dispute erupts into violence, and the painting vanishes in the chaos, Han and Leia are thrust into a desperate race to reclaim it before Imperial troops or a band of unsavory treasure peddlers get there first. Dangerous as the chase is, for Leia it leads into especially dark territory. Already haunted by the specter of her infamous father, and fearful that his evil may infect future generations, she has suffered a disturbing Force vision of Luke turning to the dark side. As she battles beside Han against marauding TIE fighters, encroaching stormtroopers, and Tatooine s savage Tusken Raiders, Leia s struggle with the warring emotions inside her culminates in the discovery of an extraordinary link to the past. And as long buried secrets and truths at last emerge, she faces a moment of reckoning that will forever alter her destiny…
and that of the New Republic. From the Hardcover edition.

Outbound Flight

It began as the ultimate voyage of discovery only to become the stuff of lost Republic legend…
and a dark chapter in Jedi history. Now, at last, acclaimed author Timothy Zahn returns to tell the whole extraordinary story of the remarkable and doomed Outbound Flight Project.

The Clone Wars have yet to erupt when Jedi Master Jorus C baoth petitions the Senate for support of a singularly ambitious undertaking. Six Jedi Masters, twelve Jedi Knights, and fifty thousand men, women, and children will embark aboard a gargantuan vessel, equipped for years of travel on a mission to contact intelligent life and colonize undiscovered worlds beyond the known galaxy. The government bureaucracy threatens to scuttle the expedition before it can even start until Master C baoth foils a murderous conspiracy plot, winning him the political capital he needs to set in motion the dream of Outbound Flight.

Or so it would seem. For unknown to the famed Jedi Master, the successful launch of the mission is secretly being orchestrated by an unlikely ally: the evil Sith Lord, Darth Sidious, who has his own reasons for wanting Outbound Flight to move forward…
and, ultimately, to fail.

Yet Darth Sidious is not the mission’s most dangerous challenge. Once underway, the starship crosses paths at the edge of Unknown Space with the forces of the alien Chiss Ascendancy and the brilliant mastermind best known as Thrawn. Even Jedi Knight Obi Wan Kenobi, aboard Outbound Flight with his young Padawan student, Anakin Skywalker, cannot help avert disaster. Thus what begins as a peaceful Jedi mission is violently transformed into an all out war for survival against staggering odds and the most diabolical of adversaries.

Timothy Zahn s unique mix of espionage, political gamesmanship, and deadly interstellar combat breathes electrifying life into a Star Wars legend.

Star Wars

Never before has the incendiary mix of action, politics, and intrigue that has become Timothy Zahn’s trademark, been mmore evident that in this new Star Wars epic. On the heels of the stunning events chronicled in Star Wars: A New Hope, the newly minted heroes of the Rebellion-fledgling Jedi Luke Skywalker, smuggler turned reluctant freedom-fighter Han Solo, and Princess Leia Organa, a bold leader with a world to avenge-must face the harsh realities of the cataclysmic conflict into which they have so bravely plunged. From this point forward, legends will grow, treachery will abound, and lives will be irrevocably altered, in the long, hard fight to counter the fist of tyranny and restore hope to a galaxy too long in darkness.

The destruction of the Death Star by the Rebel Alliance was a decisive blow against the Empire, but Palpatine and his monstrous enforcer, Darth Vader, are no less of a threat. The brutal extermination of Alderaan not only demonstrated the magnitude of their murderous power, but served as a chilling testament to their resolve to crush the Rebel uprising. Standing against them, Skywalker, Solo, and the Princess remain uncertain opponents. Luke is gifted and brave, but unschooled in the power he possesses. Han has doubts about waging someone else’s war-and his contentiousness is one more burden for Leia to bear as she struggles to help keep the Rebellion alive. The three have been sent to mediate a dispute between Rebel Alliance factions in Shelsha Sector-agitating matters by forcing Han to deal not only with pirates, but with his more dreaded enemy, politics. At the same time, Mara Jade-all of eighteen and years away from her fateful meeting with Luke-is serving her evil master, Palpatine, well in her role as the Emperor’s Hand: tracking suspected treachery in the Empire to what may be high places-while trying to stay out of Darth Vader’s way.

But the Rebels will prove to be only one of the Empire’s concerns. For Imperial Stormtrooper Daric LaRone, his faith in the Empire shaken by the wanton destruction of Alderaan, will commit a sudden and violent act of defiance, and take four other enforcers with him, in a desperate bid to elude their masters’ wrath.

Each of these fateful actions, whether sanctioned, secret, or scandalous, will expose brutality and corruption, spur upheavals destined to shake the Empire to its core, and shape momentous events yet to come.
