John Lutz Books Overview

Ride the Lightning

AN ALO NUDGER MYSTERY No one thought Curtis Colt had been railroaded for the shooting of a liquor store owner, least of all St. Louis private investigator Alo Nudger. It had been an open and shut case of cold blooded murder, and the people of Missouri were just waiting for Colt to be strapped into the electric chair after all, three eyewitnesses couldn’t be wrong. But as time runs out on the convicted killer, Nudger receives a call from Candy Ann Adams, Colt’s fianc , who insists he’s innocent because she knows who really pulled the trigger. Much to his surprise, Nudger comes across new evidence that convinces him that maybe Candy Ann is right maybe the wrong man has been sentenced to ‘ride the lighting’…
.

Thicker Than Blood

When a shy country girl comes to Alo Nudger to help investigate a securities fraud, the last things he expects to uncover are drug dealers, a dysfunctional family, or a dangerous tattooed muscleman.

Death By Jury

Hired by an eccentric attorney to learn the facts behind a murder case, private investigator Nudger looks for answers from the defendant’s sister, a sensuous next door neighbor, an embittered sister in law, and a mysterious antiques dealer.

Tropical Heat

Tropical Heat is a first rate detective story. Fred Carver, an Orlando cop until a gunman’s bullet shattered his kneecap, acquires a cane and a new career, private investigating. From beach resorts and luxury condos, to the swamps and smuggler’s coves of the Everglades, Carver looks for a man who police think committed suicide. Mysterious coincidences follow, Carver’s life is threatened and he falls for his client, Edwina Talbot. Deception and confusion make the case into a maze, until bitter betrayal provided an explosive vehicle for a surprising climax.

Scorcher

Scorcher, the fourth book in a series that includes Tropical Heat, Flame and Kiss, again features Florida private detective Fred Carver. A serial killer is on the loose, a maniac wielding a homemade flame thrower fashioned from a scuba tank. He has murdered three people and one of them is Carver’s eight year old son. Carver will do anything to find his son’s killer and exact a father’s revenge. All clues point to the brilliant schizophrenic son of one of Florida’s wealthiest families, and when the suspect goes on the run, Carver sets out to hunt him down. A gripping story of long buried secrets and burning hate, Scorcher is a taut, explosive and thoroughly unforgettable mystery.

Kiss

Fred Carver is hired by his good friend, Lieutenant Alfonso DeSoto of the Orlando police to investigate the death of his uncle at Sunhaven, a local nursing home. Carver is harassed by Raphael Ortiz, a viciously depraved thug bent on discouraging Carver from investigating Sunhaven. Before he can solve this shocking case he must battle to stay alive, and confront some personal demons of his own in the process.

Flame

Private detective Fred Carver becomes embroiled in another strange case. A new client in an unusual situation leaves Carver’s office and gets into his car. The car explodes upon ignition and only a charred corpse remains. Identify questions develop and Carver’s case turns into murder. The compelling plot twists and turns around Carver in Lutz’s own masterful style.

The Night Caller

Young, Beautiful…
And DeadWhen he stumbles across his only daughter’s corpse in a deserted beachfront bungalow, devastated Ezekiel Cooper vows to find her murderer. What the former NYPD detective doesn’t know is that there have been other victims. Women in Queens, Sarasota, Seattle. Women who seemingly had nothing in common, aside from a grisly fate at the hands of a chillingly clever stranger. Bent on unmasking the shadowy culprit, Coop soon crosses paths with Maeve Callahan, who’s determined to lure in her sister’s killer by transforming herself into someone just like her sister. But by changing her appearance, her job, even her routine, Maeve’s plan may be working too well. Because lurking in the shadows, just as Coop feared, the elusive serial killer known as The Night Caller watches her every move…
preparing to pounce again.

The Night Watcher

9 CDs. Set in post 9/11 Manhattan, Lutz’s The Night Caller gritty psychological thriller finds NYPD homicide detectives Rica Lopez and Ben Stack on the hunt for a vengeful serial killer whose modus operandi includes binding and burning his prey in their high rise co ops. The only clue they have to go on is that the Torcher has an apparent penchant for wealthy victims, so they start at square one and investigate all of the known arsonists in the city. In the end, Rica and Stack prove to be no match for the Torcher, who manages to stay several steps ahead of them until the very end, but their lack of leads doesn’t make this book any less compelling. Lutz’s details concerning police procedure, fire fighting techniques and FDNY policy ring true, and his clever use of flashbacks draws the reader deep into the killer’s troubled psyche. The novel’s primary weaknesses include the tenuous romantic link between Ben and Rica, frequent point of view shifts and an overwhelming parade of possible suspects ranging from an avaricious real estate magnate and her aging male escort to a lesbian mayoral campaign manager. Unlike many authors in the genre, however, Lutz manages to present a fully realized villain who simultaneously inspires the reader’s sympathy and revulsion. The Night Spider / Night Victims

A computer programmer, a casting director, a call girl. The victims have nothing in common except the manner in which they spent their last night wrapped in their own bed sheets in a bloody ritual of slow, agonizing death. For NYPD Captain Thomas Horn, this adversary is unlike any he has met before. Methodical and highly skilled, the killer is always one step ahead, able to enter buildings without detection and leave no trace behind. To stop this deadly rampage, Horn must unlock the secrets of a cunning enemy who is saving his most shocking surprises for last…

Fear the Night

He comes out when the sun goes down. He delivers death from the barrel of a rifle. He’s made New York City his shooting gallery. Men and women, natives and tourists, young and old, have all been his victims. The press has named him The Night Sniper. He taunts those who would try to stop him, threatening to increase the body count unless legendary retired homicide detective Vin Repetto is willing to engage him in a lethal game of cat and mouse. Repetto paid his dues. Over twenty years on the force, obtaining a captain’s rank, and injured in the line of duty, he’s earned his retirement. Yet, he can’t help feeling responsible for the lives The Night Sniper has taken, and will continue to take if his challenge remains unanswered. The decision is snatched from his hands when the next victim is murdered right before Repetto’s eyes. Now, the game is truly set to begin, but The Night Sniper doesn’t realize that they’re playing by Repetto’s rules…

Chill of Night

There’s a twisted serial killer stalking the streets of New York City, dealing his own perverse version of justice. He kills swiftly and silently, leaving his calling card a red ‘J’ on the bodies of his prey. His victims have one thing in common: they’ve all been jurors in the city’s most infamous cases cases in which the killer was found ‘not guilty.’ Overnight, the Justice Killer has the city in a stranglehold. And there’s only one man who has a shot at finding him. Homicide detective Artemis Beam made his reputation hunting down serial killers. After getting shot by an armed robber and stepping on the wrong toes in the NYPD he’s been retired. The city needs him now, and finding the killer is his chance to get back into the life he loves. As the body count climbs and the city’s legal system fails, the Justice Killer thinks he’s outsmarted the cops. But Beam isn’t officially a cop anymore…
and he doesn’t have to play by the rules.

Darker Than Night

A killer dubbed ‘The Night Prowler’ has turned the city that doesn’t sleep into a town kept awake by terror. Unseen, he enters couples’ homes. Unsuspected, he lingers until the perfect moment arrives. He leaves ‘gifts’ for his victims before taking their lives. Enter ex homicide cop Frank Quinn, still reeling in the wake of an elaborate setup that ended his career. For Quinn, this isn’t just any job it’s a last chance to salvage his reputation. As the investigation proceeds, the murderer loses no time stalking new prey: a loan officer and her high earning husband; a couple who made a killing in the stock market; a pretty actress and her prosperous lover. With the body count rising, it’s up to Quinn to unlock the mystery of a madman’s past and end his bloody reign. Quinn’s got his work cut out because in a city the size of New York, anyone of eight million faces could be that of a killer or his next target.

In for the Kill

Frank Quinn, the relentless detective who made his debut in John Lutz’s acclaimed thriller ‘Darker Than Night’, faces his toughest and most personal case yet…
A madman is stalking women in the city. By the time his victims are found, they’ve been dismembered with careful precision, their limbs stacked into a gruesome pyramid and completely cleansed of every last drop of blood. Accustomed to working on the most grisly homicides, detective Frank Quinn’s nerves don’t rattle easily. But when the last names of the killer’s victims spell out ‘Q u i n n,’ the veteran cop feels a chill run down his spine. Then a fresh victim is linked to the one woman Quinn can’t stop desiring. Hunting down killers is what Quinn does best. But this time, Quinn is up against a psychopath that will test him as never before…

Night Kills

Frank Quinn is sure he is hunting for a madman: someone is shooting young women in the heart, defiling their bodies, leaving only torsos to be found. Quinn, a former NYPD detective, is called into the case by an ambitious chief of police and mobilises his team of brilliant law enforcement misfits. But in the concrete canyons of New York, this shocking serial murder case is turning into something very different. Jill Clark came to the city with too many hopes and too little cash. Now a seemingly deranged woman is telling her an extraordinary story. New to an exclusive dating service, Jill is warned that other women have died on their dates and that she could be next. Struggling against a death trap closing in around her, Jill has a powerful ally in Frank Quinn. But no one knows the true motive behind a rampage of cold blooded murder and how much more terrifying this is going to get.

Urge To Kill

Homicide detective Frank Quinn can’t stay retired when a new breed of murdering madman is on the prowl. In a city terrorized by bloody brutality, Quinn and his team hunt a psychopath who lures beautiful women into a night of unbridled passion, then wakes them to a vicious, drawn out death. Stumbling over a trail of horribly defiled bodies, Quinn can’t seem to catch up to the killer because the killer is about to catch up to him.

Mister X

He mutilates his victims. Slices their throats. And carves an X into their flesh. Five years ago, he claimed the lives of six women. Then the killings abruptly stopped no one knows why. Ex homicide detective Frank Quinn remembers. Which is why he’s shocked to see one of the dead women in his office. Actually, she’s the identical twin of the last victim, and she wants Quinn to find her sister’s murderer. But when the cold case heats up, it attracts the media spotlight and suddenly the killings start again…

Serial

In this new thriller by the ‘New York Times’ bestselling author of ‘Mister X,’ homicide detective Frank Quinn is pitted against a Serial killer playing a cat and mouse game full of twists, violence, and dark suspense.

Single White Female

Desperate to find a new roomate after she throws her no good boyfriend out, Allie Jones lets shy, unimposing Hedra move in, but she soon discovers that there is something horribly wrong with her new flatmate. Movie tie in.

The Ex

It’s so exciting to start over. Deidre Jones should know, since she’s doing just that. The first step was getting out of the mental hospital in St. Louis. There were those who tried to stop her…
so she had to make them understand: Deirdre gets what she wants. And she wants her ex husband, David, back. He’s got a new wife and little boy. He’s forgotten what he and Deidre once shared. But it will be easy enough to remind him now that she’s moved in upstairs…
For David, his time with Deirdre was a dark chapter he was glad to see end. Their marriage was based on dangerous, obsessive passion and when David left he never looked back. He’d hoped it was the same for Deirdre, but her ‘neighbourly’ behaviour soon proves him wrong. She’s doing her best to manipulate herself back into his life: through his child, through seduction…
through murder. Because Deirdre will do anything to get what she can never be hers and now David is the only one who can stop her…
