J.K. Rowling Books Overview

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s / Philosopher’s Stone

Harry Potter is an ordinary boy who lives in a cupboard under the stairs at his Aunt Petunia and Uncle Vernon’s house, which he thinks is normal for someone like him who’s parents have been killed in a ‘car crash’. He is bullied by them and his fat, spoilt cousin Dudley, and lives a very unremarkable life with only the odd hiccup like his hair growing back overnight! to cause him much to think about. That is until an owl turns up with a letter addressed to Harry and all hell breaks loose! He is literally rescued by a world where nothing is as it seems and magic lessons are the order of the day. Read and find out how Harry discovers his true heritage at Hogwarts School of Wizardry and Witchcraft, the reason behind his parents mysterious death, who is out to kill him, and how he uncovers the most amazing secret of all time, the fabled Philosopher’s Stone! All this and muggles too. Now, what are they? /Content /EditorialReview EditorialReview Source Amazon. com Review /Source Content Say you’ve spent the first 10 years of your life sleeping under the stairs of a family who loathes you. Then, in an absurd, magical twist of fate you find yourself surrounded by wizards, a caged snowy owl, a phoenix feather wand, and jellybeans that come in every flavor, including strawberry, curry, grass, and sardine. Not only that, but you discover that you are a wizard yourself! This is exactly what happens to young Harry Potter in J.K. Rowling’s enchanting, funny debut novel, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. In the nonmagic human world the world of ‘Muggles’ Harry is a nobody, treated like dirt by the aunt and uncle who begrudgingly inherited him when his parents were killed by the evil Voldemort. But in the world of wizards, small, skinny Harry is famous as a survivor of the wizard who tried to kill him. He is left only with a lightning bolt scar on his forehead, curiously refined sensibilities, and a host of mysterious powers to remind him that he’s quite, yes, altogether different from his aunt, uncle, and spoiled, piglike cousin Dudley.

A mysterious letter, delivered by the friendly giant Hagrid, wrenches Harry from his dreary, Muggle ridden existence: ‘We are pleased to inform you that you have been accepted at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.’ Of course, Uncle Vernon yells most unpleasantly, ‘I AM NOT PAYING FOR SOME CRACKPOT OLD FOOL TO TEACH HIM MAGIC TRICKS!’ Soon enough, however, Harry finds himself at Hogwarts with his owl Hedwig…
and that’s where the real adventure humorous, haunting, and suspenseful begins. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, first published in England as Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, continues to win major awards in England. So far it has won the National Book Award, the Smarties Prize, the Children’s Book Award, and is short listed for the Carnegie Medal, the U.K. version of the Newbery Medal. This magical, gripping, brilliant book a future classic to be sure will leave kids clamoring for Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

The Dursleys were so mean that hideous that summer that all Harry Potter wanted was to get back to the Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry. But just as he’s packing his bags, Harry receives a warning from a strange, impish creature named Dobby who says that if Harry Potter returns to Hogwarts, disaster will strike. And strike it does. For in Harry’s second year at Hogwarts, fresh torments and horrors arise, including an outrageously stuck up new professor, Gilderoy Lockheart, a spirit named Moaning Myrtle who haunts the girls’ bathroom, and the unwanted attentions of Ron Weasley’s younger sister, Ginny. But each of these seem minor annoyances when the real trouble begins, and someone or something starts turning Hogwarts students to stone. Could it be Draco Malfoy, a more poisonous rival than ever? Could it possibly be Hagrid, whose mysterious past is finally told? Or could it be the one everyone at Hogwarts most suspects…
Harry Potter himself?

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

What’s a young wizard to do when he must spend the summer with distasteful relatives and refrain from practicing magic? Thirteen year old Harry Potter puts up with this situation until Aunt Marge so annoys him that he violates a code of ethics by using his magic on her. Instead of being punished, Harry is allowed to finish out his holiday at the Leaky Cauldron Inn, a thoroughly enjoyable experience. But as Harry’s third year at Hogwarts school of Witchcraft and Wizardry begins, things turn serious when Sirius Black, the man who killed Harry’s parents and has it in for Harry, too, escapes from Azkaban Prison. While trying to find out why Sirius murdered his parents, the young hero learns more about his own past and actually ‘hears’ the end of his mothers life. In this third book of the Harry Potter series, Harry Hangs out with his friends Ron and Hermione, meets the ‘Hippogriffs’ and ‘Dementors,’ and continues to make readers care very much about his fate. Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire

The fourth book in this wildly popular series finds Harry Potter back with his muggle relatives, the Dursleys, where he has just had a very disturbing ‘dream’ involving his mortal enemy Voldemort, the sorcerer who killed his parents years earlier. When he finds his signature lightning bolt scar aching, he suspects it was more than just a dream, so he sends a letter to his godfather Sirius Black, who remains in hiding. As usual, Harry can hardly wait for the school year to begin so he can escape his mean and exceedingly nasty relations and return to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Relief from the Dursleys comes two weeks early when Harry is invited to attend the Quidditch World Cup as a guest of the Weasley family. New adventures await Harry at the World Cup and back at Hogwarts, where once again he faces mortal danger from Voldemort. When Harry and his friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger arrive at Hogwarts, they soon discover that surprises are in store: Quidditch matches have been canceled in lieu of a very special international tournament, they have a new Master of Defense Against the Dark Arts, Hagrid has obtained some new and rather disgusting specimens for the Care of Magical Creatures class, and Harry develops a crush on fellow Hogwarts student Cho Chang. Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix

I say to you all, once again in the light of Lord Voldemort’s return, we are only as strong as we are united, as weak as we are divided. Lord Voldemort s gift for spreading discord and enmity is very great. We can fight it only by showing an equally strong bond of friendship and trust. So spoke Albus Dumbledore at the end of Harry Potter s fourth year at Hogwarts. But as Harry enters his fifth year at wizard school, it seems those bonds have never been more sorely tested. Lord Voldemort s rise has opened a rift in the wizarding world between those who believe the truth about his return, and those who prefer to believe it s all madness and lies just more trouble from Harry Potter. Add to this a host of other worries for Harry A Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher with a personality like poisoned honey A venomous, disgruntled house elf Ron as keeper of the Gryffindor Quidditch team And of course, what every student dreads: end of term Ordinary Wizarding Level exams and you d know what Harry faces during the day. But at night it s even worse, because then he dreams of a single door in a silent corridor. And this door is somehow more terrifying than every other nightmare combined. In the richest installment yet of J. K. Rowling s seven part story, Harry Potter confronts the unreliability of the very government of the magical world, and the impotence of the authorities at Hogwarts. Despite this or perhaps because of it Harry finds depth and strength in his friends, beyond what even he knew; boundless loyalty and unbearable sacrifice. Though thick runs the plot as well as the spine, readers will race through these pages, and leave Hogwarts, like Harry, wishing only for the next train back.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

Book 6 in the Harry Potter seriesA New York Times BestsellerIn the fifth and most recent book, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, the last chapter, titled ‘The Second War Begins,’ started: ‘In a brief statement Friday night, Minister of Magic Cornelius Fudge confirmed that He Who Must Not Be Named has returned to this country and is active once more. ‘It is with great regret that I must confirm that the wizard styling himself Lord well, you know who I mean is alive among us again,’ said Fudge.’ Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince takes up the story of Harry Potter’s sixth year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry at this point in the midst of the storm of this battle of good and evil. The author has already said that the Half Blood Prince is neither Harry nor Voldemort. And most importantly, the opening chapter of Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince has been brewing in J. K. Rowling’s mind for 13 years. No Canadian Rights for the Harry Potter SeriesHARRY POTTER and all related characters and elements are trademarks of and Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

Readers beware. The brilliant, breathtaking conclusion to J.K. Rowling’s spellbinding series is not for the faint of heart such revelations, battles, and betrayals await in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows that no fan will make it to the end unscathed. Luckily, Rowling has prepped loyal readers for the end of her series by doling out increasingly dark and dangerous tales of magic and mystery, shot through with lessons about honor and contempt, love and loss, and right and wrong. Fear not, you will find no spoilers in our review to tell the plot would ruin the journey, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is an odyssey the likes of which Rowling’s fans have not yet seen, and are not likely to forget. But we would be remiss if we did not offer one small suggestion before you embark on your final adventure with Harry bring plenty of tissues. The heart of Book 7 is a hero’s mission not just in Harry’s quest for the Horcruxes, but in his journey from boy to man and Harry faces more danger than that found in all six books combined, from the direct threat of the Death Eaters and you know who, to the subtle perils of losing faith in himself. Attentive readers would do well to remember Dumbledore’s warning about making the choice between ‘what is right and what is easy,’ and know that Rowling applies the same difficult principle to the conclusion of her series. While fans will find the answers to hotly speculated questions about Dumbledore, Snape, and you know who, it is a testament to Rowling’s skill as a storyteller that even the most astute and careful reader will be taken by surprise.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (As: Newt Scamander)

J K Rowling has also written two small volumes, which appear as the titles of Harry’s school books within the novels. ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ and ‘Quidditch Through The Ages’ were published by Bloomsbury Children’s Books and Scholastic in March 2001 in aid of Comic Relief. The Harry Potter books have sold 400 million copies worldwide. They are distributed in over 200 territories and are translated into 67 languages.

The Tales of Beedle the Bard

The Tales of Beedle the Bard, a Wizarding classic, first came to Muggle readers attention in the book known as Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Now, thanks to Hermione Granger’s new translation from the ancient runes, we present this stunning edition with an introduction, notes, and illustrations by J. K. Rowling, and extensive commentary by Albus Dumbledore. Never before have Muggles been privy to these richly imaginative tales: The Wizard and the Hopping Pot, The Fountain of Fair Fortune, The Warlock s Hairy Heart, Babbitty Rabbitty and Her Cackling Stump, and of course, The Tale of the Three Brothers. But not only are they the equal of fairy tales we now know and love, reading them gives new insight into the world of Harry Potter. The stories are accompanied by delightful pen and ink illustrations by Ms. Rowling herself, featuring a still life frontispiece for each one. Professor Dumbledore s commentary apparently written some eighteen months before his death reveals not just his vast knowledge of Wizarding lore, but also more of his personal qualities: his sense of humor, his courage, his pride in his abilities, and his hard won wisdom. Names familiar from the Harry Potter novels sprinkle the pages, including Aberforth Dumbledore, Lucius Malfoy and his forebears, and Sir Nicholas de Mimsy Porpington or Nearly Headless Nick , as well as other professors at Hogwarts and the past owners of the Elder Wand. Dumbledore tells us of incidents unique to the Wizarding world, like hilariously troubled theatrical productions at Hogwarts or the dangers of having a hairy heart. But he also reveals aspects of the Wizarding world that his Muggle readers might find all too familiar, like censorship, intolerance, and questions about the deepest mysteries in life. Altogether, this is an essential addition to our store of knowledge about the world and the magic that J. K. Rowling has created, and a book every true Harry Potter fan will want to have for their shelves. This purchase also represents another very important form of giving: From every sale of this book, Scholastic will give its net proceeds to the CHILDREN’S HIGH LEVEL GROUP, a charity cofounded in 2005 by J.K. Rowling and Baroness Nicholson of Winterbourne, MEP. CHLG campaigns to protect and promote children’s rights and make life better for vulnerable young people. www. chlg. org Published by the Children’s High Level Group, in association with Arthur A. Levine Books, The Tales of Beedle the Bard will be available December 4, 2008.
