David Gerrold Books Overview

Yesterday’s Children / Star Hunt

In the prequel to Voyage of the Star Wolf, first officer Jonathan Korie drives his captain and the crew of their obsolete starship on a fanatical, possibly disastrous search for an enemy that may be a phantom.

The Voyage of the Star Wolf

The first work in David Gerrold’s Star Wolf trilogy, this tale pits the human members of the Star Wolf space vessel against the superhuman Morthan crew. Captain Jonathan Korie, hampered by the loss of most of the human fleet to the Morthans and a nearly disabled ship of his own, faces the Morthan threat driven by the need for survival and the desire for revenge. A classic of military science fiction, the Star Wolf trilogy combines rapid action with powerful studies of military character. This replaces 0553264664.

The Middle of Nowhere

The second installment in the acclaimed Star Wolf trilogy, this tale pits the captain of the limping Star Wolf space vessel against an imp, a parasitic biocomputer that is creating havoc and pirating vital information from its position inside the ship. As the imp gathers information to aid the impending attack of the enemy Morthan fleet, Captain Korie struggles with both the internal problems caused by the imp, and the threat of an oncoming Morthan attack. Classics of military science fiction, the Star Wolf trilogy combines fast paced action with powerful studies of the military character.

Blood and Fire

Executive Officer Korie had faced and defeated seemingly invincible Morthan battleships, elusive bio computer imps, and dreaded Morthan assassins. It would be on the starship Norway, however, that he would meet his greatest challenge a challenge that could change the outcome of a war and the destiny of humankind. The latest installment of the Star Wolf series, this third galactic struggle concludes the popular trilogy with a rescue mission that is far from routine. Never before published, Blood and Fire is the long awaited conclusion to the Star Wolf series.

Jumping Off the Planet

The science here is every bit as convincing as the fiction.’ Publishers Weekly

Leaping to the Stars

But which one?Charles has come into possession of a prototype HARLIE unit so revolutionary and state of the art that corporations will stop at nothing including murder to control it. Earth is in a state of social and economic meltdown. The battle for domination between rival corporations has gone interplanetary. Charles and the HARLIE unit escape capture on Earth, but the hunt for them intensifies when they are discovered to be on the moon. The stakes have escalated to full scale war. For Charles, everyone is his enemy. No one can be trusted. Charles has been at war before: only that was a personal civil war waged between him and his parents. In an effort to end the strife once and for all thirteen year old Charles took the drastic step of ‘divorcing’ his parents. When against all odds he succeeded, he won his freedom. He and his brothers are now free to do what they choose. To go where they want. Freedom for Charles and his brothers means passage on a starship to a colony Outbeyond. There they will use HARLIE to help build a better world. But freedom also means exile. From his home. From his friends. From everything he has ever known. And even his chance for a new life on a remote planet is put in jeopardy when a critical malfunction with the HARLIE unit seemingly threatens the integrity of the voyage. However, a faction of passengers on board the Brightliner Cascade may pose an even greater risk. A risk not even an intelligence as powerful as a HARLIE unit can avert.

Child of Earth

From Publishers Weekly Khadra is the nom de plume for Algerian army officer Mohamed Moulessehoul In the Name of God; Wolf Dreams, who illustrates the effects of repression on a pair of Kabul couples in this slim, harrowing novel of life in Afghanistan under Taliban rule. Gloomy prison guard Atiq Shaukat is tired of his grim duties, keeping watch over prisoners slated for public execution. Life at home, where his wife, Musarrat, is slowly dying of a chronic illness, is no better. Mohsen Ramat, meanwhile, clings to the remains of his middle class life together with his beautiful, progressive wife, Zunaira, after the Taliban strip them of their livelihood and dignity. Khadra’s storytelling style recalls that of Naguib Mahfouz in the early chapters, in which the tense dissatisfaction of both couples is revealed. The pivotal event occurs when Ramat discharges his frustrations by participating in the brutal stoning of a female Taliban prisoner. The incident changes the dynamic of his marriage; after an extended argument about the incident, Ramat persuades Zunaira to go for a stroll in downtown Kabul and the couple is harassed and nearly brutalized by Taliban soldiers. Zunaira continues to bridle at her situation, and when their next argument turns physical, Ramat falls and dies after hitting his head on the wall. Shaukat is given the assignment of guarding Zunaira after she is arrested and charged with murder, and his instant infatuation with her sets off a remarkable chain of events. Khadra’s simple, elegant prose, finely drawn characters and chilling insights ‘Kabul has become the antechamber to the great beyond’ prepare the way for the terrible climax. Like Khaled Hosseini’s The Kite Runner, this is a superb meditation on the fate of the Afghan people. Copyright Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. The Flying Sorcerers (With: Larry Niven)

This funny and insightful science fiction classic introduces Shoogar, the greatest wizard ever known in his village. His spells can strike terror in the hearts of even his most powerful enemies. But the enemy he faces now is like none he has ever seen before. The stranger has come from nowhere and is ignorant of even the most basic principles of magic. But the stranger has an incredibly powerful magic of his own. There is no room in Shoogar’s world for an intruder whose powers match his own, let alone one whose powers might exceed his. So before the blue sun can cross the face of the red sun once more, Shoogar will show this stranger just who is boss.

The Man Who Folded Himself

This classic work of science fiction is widely considered to be the ultimate time travel novel. When Daniel Eakins inherits a time machine, he soon realizes that he has enormous power to shape the course of history. He can foil terrorists, prevent assassinations, or just make some fast money at the racetrack. And if he doesn’t like the results of the change, he can simply go back in time and talk himself out of making it! But Dan soon finds that there are limits to his powers and forces beyond his control. This replaces 0553290061.

The Martian Child

A Novel about a Single Father Adopting a SonBased on a True Story’Oh. One more thing: Dennis thinks he’s a Martian…
.’Soon to be parents are instructed to ‘expect the unexpected.’ Good advice, it turns out. Especially for the anxious or apprehensive parent who is considering adoption. How can one know about an adopted child? All David Gerrold knew for certain was that he wanted to be a parent. As a single gay man he thought adoption would be the most direct route to fatherhood. But he soon found out to both his joy and dismay that the emotional route to fatherhood was anything but direct. In fact, it was a roller coaster ride that changed his life forever. When he first saw the picture of eight year old Dennis beaming up at him from the photograph in the adoption book, David knew this was the boy for him. But these were the facts: Abandoned as an infant by drug addicted parents. Documented abuse. Shuffled from one foster home to another. Deficit hyperactivity disorder. Ritalin to control his violent emotional outbursts. For his antisocial behavior: Disipramine. The conclusion from experts: Dennis was ‘hard to place.’ A polite bureaucratic euphemism for unadoptable. It was a depressing as*sessment that David could not would not accept. He needed Dennis. And he believed Dennis needed him. It was that simple. Until the reality of single fatherhood set in.A searingly honest, funny, moving, and heartfelt portrait of the joys and perils of parenting, The Martian Child is David Gerrold’s valentine to the redemptive value of love…
in this case a father’s love for his son. A son who thinks he’s a Martian.

Alternate Gerrolds

Everyday themes as diverse as exploration, the fight against evil, laboratory experiments, and self improvement are presented in this new anthology of short stories from David Gerrold. Largely consisting of stories featuring an alternative history, and often written for Mike Resnick’s Alternative series, the stories range from funny to horrifying and lighthearted to profound. In ‘Franz Kafka, Superhero!’ Kafka employs his unusual metamorphosis to fight evil throughout the world and take on even Sigmund Freud. Two characters who hope to better themselves experience ‘The Seminar from Hell,’ while ‘The Firebringers’ features Humphrey Bogart, Gregory Peck, Ronald Reagan, and Jimmy Stewart as soldiers charged with dropping the first atom bomb. Taking an archaeological turn, a team of anthropologists struggles with understanding the artifacts of a mysterious alien race in ‘Digging in Gehenna.’ With wit and imagination, these pieces provide a rare and intriguing addition to any Gerrold collection.

The Involuntary Human
