Anne Fine Books Overview

The Killjoy

Nobody, not even his former wife Margaret, has ever treated Ian Laidlaw in a natural way. Presented with his hideous facial scars, everyone he meets reliably falls back on cast iron, distant courtesy to hide pity or disgust or shock. But then Alicia Davie, a careless young student, breaks the rules totally by laughing in his face. Alicia goes on to infiltrate the hidden man, exposing the obsessive, destructive passions that lurk beneath his primly cordial manner, never realizing that she is playing with fire…

Taking The Devil’s Advice

Spending the summer with his ex wife, his children, his ex gardener and ex wife’s new husband was never going to be a good idea. Perhaps Oliver should have expected the autobiography he was writing would be constantly sabotaged? Perhaps he should have guessed that he’d have scorn and derision poured upon him? But then Oliver was a philosopher, always happier with abstraction than reality, and the realities of his life have never been simple and they’re just about to come crashing down around him in the most unexpected and hilarious of ways.

Telling Liddy

The Palmer sisters are close. They see each other often, for shopping trips and casual suppers. They care for one another’s children and houses and pets through holidays and emergencies. They phone one another ceaselessly. And there are never any secrets. Not until now.

All Bones and Lies

Colin is in many ways an ideal citizen, holding down a responsible job, taking care of his elderly mother, and trying to keep his family together. But no one in his life knows about his other much more secret life, that involves a garden shed, a circus acrobat, a much adored three year old charmer, and a certain Mr. Haksar’s increasingly disquieting penchant for squabbling with his neighbors. What Colin doesn’t know is that, thanks to a house insurance policy incorrectly filled in by his mother, his two lives are set to collide, and there is nothing he can do to stop them.

Raking the Ashes

Full of insight and dark humour, the story of a man, his two children and their stepmother, who gradually finds herself an outsider in her own home. Whether its lovers, colleagues or family, Tilly has always been good at pushing people in and out of her life exactly as it suits her. Then along comes Geoffrey, gentle, compassionate, generous to a fault, with his miserable little children and his manipulative ex wife. Tilly’s own expertise in the arts of deception and avoidance should be enough to make sure she s always one step ahead of Geoffrey s crumbling family. But time and again she finds herself staying, brought down by their cowardly backsliding and their barefaced lies. How has she managed to stay so long in a relationship she knows perfectly well has to be doomed? More importantly, how can Tilly plan her permanent escape?Anne Fine s sixth novel is a scintillating comedy about the ties that bind more savagely than any other those of families.

Our Precious Lulu

The final straw in the ongoing rivalry between Geraldine and her stepsister comes when Lulu gloatingly gets herself pregnant, much to the silent horror of Geraldine who’s been trying to do the same for five years. Anne Fine s spiky, funny and utterly readable novel of revenge mercilessly dissects family life.

The Diary of a Killer Cat

The hilarious confessions of a ferocious feline

Poor Ellie is horrified when her cat, Tuffy, drags a dead bird into the house. Then a mouse. Before long, another apparent victim arrives though the cat door. Can softhearted Ellie get her beloved pet to change his wild, wild ways before he ends up in even deeper trouble? Especially when Tuffy can’t understand what all the fuss is about?

Chock a block with lighthearted illustrations, readers experience a deliciously sharp and funny view of the world through a cat’s eyes.

The Return of the Killer Cat

When Ellie tells Tuffy the family is leaving for the week, Tuffy couldn’t be more thrilled. A whole blissful week of rolling around in the flower bed and lounging on top of the TV? Tuffy can’t wait! But the cat sitter the family procures doesn’t understand Tuffy’s refined feline palate, and Little Miss Soppy next door seems intent on dressing Tuffy in a nightie and calling him Janet. To get out of such a terrible mess, Tuffy is going to have to rely on his comical killer instincts. In this raucous sequel to The Diary of a Killer Cat, brim*ming with witty illustrations, Anne Fine reunites her readers with an unforgettable narrator who sees the world as only a conniving cat can.

The Jamie and Angus Stories

Jamie and Angus an imaginative little boy and his treasured toy bull spring to life in six delightful stories from Britain’s Children s Laureate, Anne Fine illustrated with warmth and charm by Penny Dale. The moment Jamie sets eyes on Angus in the toy shop window, with his silky white coat and forlorn gaze, he just knows they belong together. On Christmas morning the two are united at last, and the coveted Highland Bull becomes Jamie s constant companion through an ill fated run in with the washing machine, Uncle Edward s nighttime jump training sessions, a stay at the hospital for a stomachache, and three more thoroughly amusing adventures.

Jamie and Angus Together

The imaginative Jamie and his coveted Highland bull, endearing stars of the award winning Jamie and Angus Stories, return in six charming tales imbued with the gentle, dry humor of Anne Fine’s storytelling and Penny Dale’s illustrative warmth.

Goggle-Eyes

What’s the hook? The protagonist’s humour and shrewd insight makes this a Gripping novel. What are the themes? Step families, conflicting generations, home and school life. Teaching points? Many excellent passages which are good models for pupils’ writing.

The Angel of Nitshill Road

But the angel brings a clever solution. Life at school is going to be very different from now on.

The Chicken Gave It To Me

This is a classic story from one of our best loved authors. Gemma doesn’t believe a chicken could have written a book chickens can’t even read! But here in front of them is ‘The True Story of Harrowing Farm’, and its scratchy pages definitely look, well, chickeny. It is an epic tale of cruelty and bravery, the story of a chicken who flies frillions of miles, reaching the heights of intergalactic superstardom, to try to save us humans…

In an author’s note, Anne Fine describes The Road of Bones as an adventure escape story set in a sort of Russia, in a sort of 1930s, under a Stalin type leader. This chilling political thriller follows the frantic footsteps of a teenager on the run, a criminal who hasn t committed a crime, a young man on a path to discovering the truth about how far he will go in order to survive.
