Georgette Heyer Books Overview

Death in the Stocks

A bobby on his night rounds discovers a corpse in evening dress locked in the stocks on the village green. Inspector Hannasyde is called in, but sorting out the suspects proves a challenge. Anyone in the eccentric, exceedingly uncooperative Vereker family had the motive and means to kill Andrew Vereker, who seemed to have been universally disliked. One cousin allies himself with the inspector, while the victim’s half brother and sister, each of whom suspects the other, markedly try to set him off the scent. To readers’ delight, the killer is so cunning not to mention the author, that the mystery remains until the very end PRAISE FOR GEORGETTE HEYER: ‘Our Georgette Heyer display of the Sourcebooks reprints has been a huge success, not only to those early fans like myself, but to many new readers who appreciate her style and wit.’ Nancy Olson, Quail Ridge Books, Raleigh, NC ‘Reading Georgette Heyer is the next best thing to reading Jane Austen.’ Publishers Weekly ‘Wonderful characters, elegant, witty writing, perfect period detail, and rapturously romantic. Behold, Here’s Poison

Experience Georgette Heyer’s sparkling dialogue in one of her most popular mysteries. It’s no ordinary morning at the Poplars the master is found dead in his bed and it turns out that his high blood pressure was not the cause of death. Heyer uses her attention to detail and brilliant characterizations to concoct a baffling crime for which every single member of the quarrelsome family has a motive, and none, of course, has an alibi. Heyer’s sparkling dialogue is a master class in British wit, sarcasm and the intricacies of life above and below stairs. Meet the Matthews before the next one dies…
It’s no ordinary morning at the Poplars the master is found dead in his bed, and it seems his high blood pressure was not the cause. But every single member of the quarrelsome Matthews family has a motive and none, of course, has an alibi. They Found Him Dead

They Found Him Dead

The day after his sixtieth birthday celebration, an event marked by dissension among his family and houseguests, Silas Kane’s body is found at the foot of a cliff. The coroner’s verdict of misadventure becomes suspect, however, when Kane’s heir is shot and killed in his study, and the next in succession receives death threats. The redoubtable Inspector Hannasyde is called to the case, in which the main suspect appears to be an 80 year old lady. As the inspector brings to bear all his considerable powers of detection, it becomes obvious to him that someone among the houseguests and family members at the fateful weekend gathering must not be who they seem

‘Ranks alongside such incomparable whodunnit authors as Christie, Marsh, Tey, and Allingham.’ San Francisco Chronicle Who would kill the perfect gentleman? When Ernest Fletcher is found bludgeoned to death in his study, everyone is shocked and mystified: Ernest was well liked and respected, so who would have a motive for killing him? Superintendent Hannasyde, with consummate skill, uncovers one dirty little secret after another, and with them, a host of people who all have reasons for wanting Fletcher dead. Then, a second murder is committed, giving a grotesque twist to a very unusual case, and Hannasyde realizes he’s up against a killer on a mission…

A Christmas Party / Envious Casca

‘Tis the season to be dead…
A holiday party takes on a sinister aspect when the colorful assortment of guests discovers there is a killer in their midst. The owner of the substantial estate, that old Scrooge Nathaniel Herriard, is found stabbed in the back. While the delicate matter of inheritance could be the key to this crime, the real conundrum is how any of the suspects could have entered a locked room to commit the foul deed. For Inspector Hemingway of Scotland Yard, the investigation is complicated by the fact that every guest is hiding something throwing all of their testimony into question and casting suspicion far and wide. The clever and daring crime will mystify readers, yet the answer is in plain sight all along…

No Wind of Blame

The superlatively analytical Inspector Hemingway is confronted by a murder that seems impossible no one was near the murder weapon at the time the shot was fired. Everyone on the scene seems to have a motive, not to mention the wherewithal to commit murder, and alibis that simply don’t hold up. The inspector is sorely tried by a wide variety of suspects, including the neglected widow, the neighbor who’s in love with her, her resentful daughter, and a patently phony Russian prince preying on the widow’s emotional vulnerability and social aspirations. And then there’s the blackmail plot that may or may not be at the heart of the case

These Old Shades

Set in the Georgian period, about 20 years before the Regency, These Old Shades is considered to be the book that launched Heyer’s career. It features two of Heyer’s most memorable characters: Justin Alastair, the Duke of Avon, and Leonie, whom he rescues from a life of ignomy and comes to love and marry. The Duke is known for his coldness of manner, his remarkable omniscience, and his debauched lifestyle. Late one evening, he is accosted by a young person dressed in ragged boy’s clothing running away from a brutal rustic guardian. The Duke buys ‘Leon’ and makes the child his page. ‘Leon’ is in fact Leonie, and she serves the Duke with deep devotion. When he uncovers the true story of her birth, he wreaks an unforgettable revenge on her sinister father in a chilling scene of public humiliation. Simon the Coldheart

In the early 15th century, during the middle of the Hundred Years’ War, England and France were fighting for sovereignty over France. It was a time of hand to hand combat, the invention of the longbow, and real knights in armor.

Simon Beauvallet was born in 1386, the illegitimate son of Geoffrey of Malvallet. After his mother’s death in 1400, he and his half brother, the legitimate son and heir of his father, became great friends of the Prince, fighting against France.

Known for his silence and nicknamed ‘the Coldheart,’ Simon nonetheless loved children and had a complex and deep personality. After the Battle of Agincourt in 1415, he was sent to besiege Belremy, where he met the lady, Margaret, who eventually surrendered to the English and became his bride.

The Conqueror

The true story of the bast*ard son who made himself a king and the woman who melted his heart.

The stirring history of William The Conqueror, Duke of Normandy, who invaded England and became the King. His victory, concluded at the Battle of Hastings in 1066, is known as the Norman Conquest.

Known for her exhaustive research and ability to bring past eras to life, bestselling author Georgette Heyer tells the story of William The Conqueror, who became King of England in 1066, and his queen Matilda, the high born noblewoman who at first scornfully spurned him. William was an illegitimate child of a nobleman, who won his dukedom through force of will, and went on to bring European feudalism to England, along with a program of building and fortification that included the building of the Tower of London.

The historical novel includes Heyer’s brilliant period language and her perfect grasp of the details of the day clothing, armor, weapons, and food making for a fascinating and blood stirring read.

Bonus reading group guide available inside.

‘From the moment when the infant grasped his father’s sword with a strength unusual in one so young, William showed himself a leader among men.

The Conqueror grew out of an incredible amount of historical research into the way of life, the way of speech, the way of thought, and feeling, and praying in the Eleventh Century. Without sacrificing the flow of her plot, Miss Heyer conveys an understanding of this period, more authentic as well as more colorful than many historical tomes. It is obvious in reading this novel that Georgette Heyer is indeed a mistress of her craft.’

Royal Escape

A fascinating look into a tumultuous interlude in British history and the life of Bonnie Prince Charlie.

This brilliantly entertaining novel is a fictionalization of the true story of Charles II May 29, 1630 February 6, 1685, charting his daring flight to France after the Battle of Worcester, where Cromwell and his Protestant forces defeated the Catholic king. For six weeks, Charles’ life was in danger as he hid in the English countryside, disguised as a servant, unable to find a way across heavily guarded borders. His loyal courtiers were appalled by the ease and glee with which he adopted his new humble identity, insisting on chatting and even drinking with ostlers and houseboys. Two young women were instrumental in his eventual escape and one of them became a lifelong friend of the exiled king.

The Corinthian

Georgette Heyer presents her sparkling wit with a Shakespearean twist. Walking home at dawn, quite drunk, Sir Richard Wyndham encounters heiress Penelope Creed climbing out her window. She is running away from a dreaded marriage to her fish lipped cousin, while Sir Richard himself is contemplating a loveless marriage with a woman his friends have compared to a cold poultice. Sir Richard can’t allow her to careen about the countryside unchaperoned, even in the guise of a boy, so he pretends to be her tutor and takes her on a fine adventure. When their stagecoach overturns, they find themselves embroiled with thieves, at the center of a murder investigation, and finally, in love. 20090526

The Spanish Bride

Based on the true story of Brigade Major Harry Smith and the very young Spanish noblewoman he met and married during the Peninsular Wars, when the Duke of Wellington’s forces fought Napoleon’s army in Spain and Portugal.

After marrying Harry Smith when she was 14 years old, Juana Smith ‘followed the drum,’ marching at the back of the troops along with the other wives and the officers’ servants. Juana became a camp favorite, charming all with her youthful enthusiasm. In spite of the danger, Juana thrived on military life and her passionate, if somewhat stormy, relationship with Harry.

Heyer’s research encompassed every available diary from that time period, including Harry Smith’s, and all of the Duke of Wellington’s writings and dispatches. She brings alive military life during the Regency period, how the armies marched and fought, as well as how the nobility provided for its own comfort with servants, horses, dogs and furniture.
