Timothy Zahn Books Overview

The Judas Solution

Damon Lathe and his blackcollar combat team were sent to capture five hidden Nova class warships from under the Ryqril conquerors snouts. Against all odds they had succeeded, sharing their prize with the Terran Democratic Empire’s erstwhile Chryselli allies, who were themselves the current focus of Ryqril aggression. Lathe had followed that by successfully entering Earth s last mountain war era fortress and found a small resistance movement s final project: a drug called Whiplash, which could break the supposedly unbreakable Ryqril loyalty conditioning. Now they face their most serious challenge. On one of the conquered human colony worlds is a Ryqril tactical center through which flows an entire sector s worth of military data. If the blackcollars can find a way inside, it could tip the balance in the current Ryqril Chryselli war. It could even start humanity on the path back to ultimate freedom. But the Ryqril aren t sitting idly by. Under threat of reprisals against his world, Prefect Jamus Galway of Plinry is already on the case. His plan: to turn the blackcollars and their combat skill into unknowing tools of the Ryqril. His hidden ace: a clone duplicate of Lathe s ally Allan Caine, ready to be slipped into Lathe s inner circle. It will be the blackcollars most important mission. It may also be their last.

Cobra Alliance

Earth had won its war with the Troft because of the Cobras, a guerilla force whose weapons were surgically implanted, invisible to the unsuspecting eye, yet undeniably deadly. The Moreau family were the most famous of the Cobra warriors, but their descendent, Jasmine Jin Moreau Broom, is worried about the current attitudes of the Cobra worlds and their leaders. Generations after the planets were settled, not everyone on the Cobra worlds thinks that the Cobras are worth their high cost, and favor cutting their funding. Then a new factor is thrown into the mix. Jin receives a message, sender unknown, delivered by a Troft messenger: To the Demon Warrior Jasmine Jin Moreau: Urgent you return at once to Qasama. Crisis situation requires your personal attention. Years ago, a Cobra team, including Jin, had gone to Qasama at the urging of the Troft to counter a threat to other planets, both human and Troft. Jin and her family cannot think of a reason why any Qasaman would want Jin or any other Cobra to return to their planet. Moreover, the Cobra worlds have prohibited any of their citizens from traveling to Qasama, and backed up the prohibition with stiff prison sentences. But the possibility of danger to the Cobra worlds is too important for Jin to ignore the message. She and her son Merrick, also a Cobra, book passage on a Troft ship to Qasama. But are they really going where their help is needed or are they walking into a trap?

Cobra Guardian

When the colony worlds Adirondack and Silvern fell to the Troft forces almost without a struggle. Outnumbered and on the defensive, Earth made a desperate decision. It would attack the aliens not from space, but on the ground with forces the Trofts did not even suspect. Thus were created the Cobras, a guerilla force whose weapons were surgically implanted, invisible to the unsuspecting eye, yet undeniably deadly. And the Moreau family were the most famous of the Cobra warriors. Long after victory over the Troft was achieved, the Cobras made common cause against their former adversaries against a new enemy. Their reward was three planets that would be a home for the Cobras, who deadly powers made them too dangerous to feel at home on Earth. Now, years had passed and not everyone on the Cobra worlds thought that the Cobras were worth the cost of maintaining their existing built in weaponry, let alone supporting research to improve the Cobra weapons, and possibly even put an end to the negative effects of that built in weaponry, which caused Cobras to die much too young. Many who had never known interplanetary war were convinced that the Cobras were not needed at all. That was a grave miscalculation, because a Troft faction has decided to invade the Cobra planets in force, using a new strategy that even the formidable Cobra warriors may not be able to defeat…

Conquerors’ Pride

Timothy Zahn, Hugo Award winning author of The New York Times best selling Star Wars trilogy, blazes a spectacular new path across the sky in an epic original novel of star spanning action adventure, mystery and intrigue. A long era of peace and prosperity in the interstellar Commonwealth has suddenly come to an end. Four alien starships of unknown origin have attacked, without provocation, an eight ship Peacemaker task force, utterly destroying it in six savage minutes. The authorities claim there were no survivors. But Lord Stewart Cavanaugh, a former member of Parliament, has learned through back channels that one man may have survived to be captured by the aliens: his son, Commander Pheylan Cavanaugh. A large scale invasion appears imminent, and the strictest security measures are in effect…
measures that Lord Cavanaugh has no choice but to defy. He recruits Adam Quinn, who once flew with the elite Copperheads fighter pilots whose minds are literally one with their machines to rescue his son. Quinn assembles a crack force of Copperheads to steal out of the Commonwealth security zone and snatch Pheylan Cavanaugh from the conquerors. Depending on the outcome, Quinn and his men will retum home as heroes or as the galaxy’s most despised traitors if they come home at all.

Conquerors’ Heritage

In Conquerors’ Pride, Timothy Zahn, Hugo Award winning author of the New York Times bestselling Star Warsr trilogy, unfurled an epic tale of drama and courage as the interstallar Commonwealth faced savage invasion by alien starships of unknown origin. Now he probes deeply into the world of the invaders themselves in one of the most powerful evocations of an alien society ever created.

The Zhirrzh have won a temporary respite in their war with the barbarians. But the Human captive Pheylan Cavanaugh has escaped, and for that Thrr gilag, the young Searcher, finds himself disgraced, his bond engagement to a female of a rival clan imperilled. Soon he becomes a target of hidden and powerful forces seeking to remake Zhirrzh society in their own merciless image. His only hope is to prove that the overclan authorities are wrong: that it was not the
Humans who started the war.

But time is short. The forces of the Zhirrzh are overextended and face swift retaliation. The Zhirrzh have learned to conquer death itself but even that awesome power will be no match for the devastating might of the Human Conqueror armadas. Thrr gilag soon comes to realize that his people face a two fold
threat: destruction by Human technology…
or destruction from within.

Conquerors’ Legacy

Hugo Award winner and 1 New York Times bestselling author Timothy Zahn returns to complete his original, acclaimed SF trilogy. As both humans and the alien Zhirrzh prepare for all out galactic war, a handful of individuals from both sides are stunned to discover that the explosive catalyst for the impending battle is a misunderstanding both tragic and profound. Determined to avoid mutual extinction for both their races, this band now becomes the focus of the subtle and dangerous force whose goal it is to annihilate and destroy.

Night Train to Rigel

HUMANITY S LAST HOPE
It begins when a man delivers a message for former government agent Frank Compton only to fall dead at his feet. The message is a summons from the Spiders, the exotic and mysterious creatures who run the Quadrail, an incredible transportation system connecting civilizations across the galaxy. The Spiders believe that someone or something is preparing to attack their entire network and the worlds it serves, by smuggling battleships through the Quadrail something that should be impossible to do. Compton, with the aid of a beautiful but enigmatic agent of the Spiders, is their last hope.

Because nobody else has been able to find the elusive enemy who seeks to enslave the entire galaxy and Earth is its next target.

The Third Lynx

Former government agent Frank Compton foiled a plot to enslave the galaxy in Night Train to Rigel. But the Modhri, an ancient telepathically linked intelligence, has walkers, unwilling hosts that can be anywhere, anything and anyone. And Compton is the only man who knows how to fight them, as they wage a secret war against the galactic civilizations linked by the Quadrail, the only means of intra galactic transit.

Accompanied by Bayta, a woman with strange ties to the robot like Spiders who run the Quadrail, and dogged by special agent Morse who suspects him of murder, Compton races the Modhri from station to station to acquire a set of valuable sculptures from a long dead civilization. What the Modhri wants with them is anybody’s guess, but if Compton can t outwit it, the whole galaxy will find out the hard way.

Odd Girl Out

In this noir thriller set on the interstellar Quadrail, former government agent Frank Compton can’t catch a break. After a successful mission against the Modhri, the coral polyp based group mind that is attempting to take over the galaxy, Frank arrives at his New York apartment. A young woman is waiting for him, pointing a gun at his face. She tells him that someone on New Tigris is holding her ten year old sister. Compton takes her gun and orders her out, only to be rousted out of bed and accused of her brutal murder.

After Frank’s ally Bruce McMicking posts his bail, Frank travels to New Tigris with his assistant, Bayta, and locates the sister, who is part of a key resistance group that is fighting the Modhri throughout the galaxy. Compton must get the girl to a hidden refuge planet via the Quadrail to ensure the continued efforts of the resistance. But can he do it before the Modhri gets to her first?

Compelling characters, hard boiled sleuthing, and non stop action make this a hard SF thriller that will grab the reader and not let go until the last page.

The Domino Pattern

Frank Compton used to be an agent for the security forces of Earth, but that was a piece of cake compared to what he’s had to deal with working for the aliens who run the Quadrail, an interstellar transportation system connecting a dozen civilizations across the galaxy. He s been trying to end the domination of an alien lifeform called the Modhri. This enormously powerful creature wants to rule the galaxy by controlling the thoughts of all its citizens. It does so by having parts of itself infect others on contact, and act as agents for it without them being aware they re being manipulated. When Frank and his assistant Bayta journey to investigate a connection between the Modhri and the Filiaelians, they come up against a conspiracy on the Quadrail. Passengers are being murdered but something besides murder haunts the Quadrail. A plot is brewing that even the Modhri fears. And once again, Frank and Bayta may be the only ones who can stop it.

Dragon and Thief

Jack Morgan has been framed for theft. He’s hiding on a distant planet with the virtual presence of his deceased Uncle Virge, a con man who has been his only family since Jack’s parents died. Jack knows he must clear his name before the cops catch up with him. A firefight among ships in the skies above leaves a downed ship near Jack’s hiding place, with a single unlikely survivor. It looks like a dragon, and it must join with a human host within six hours or die. The only available host is Jack. Draycos, Jack’s new ‘companion,’ is a K’da, a dragonlike species that lives symbiotically with the humanoid Shontine. The attackers, determined to exterminate Draycos’s people, will find them if they don’t flee; so the pair works together to escape the planet and begin a search for the truth behind Jack’s frame up and the identity of the attackers. With Jack’s future hanging in the balance, as well as the future of billions of Draycos’s people, the pair must track down the people who framed Jack, and prevent the destruction of the remaining K’da and Shontine. They’ll also discover whether their union was mere coincidence, or a friendship written in the stars.

Dragon and Soldier

Dragon and Thief, the first novel in the Dragonback series, was named an American Library Association Best Book For Young Adults. The second novel, Dragon and Soldier is another fast paced, compulsively readable SF adventure featuring an odd couple of reluctant partners on an unusual quest.

Draycos, a golden scaled draconic K’da poet warrior, was on a scout fleet ship when it was attacked, with him the lone survivor. Forced to find a new symbiotic humanoid host, he found Jack Morgan. Jack has been on his own, making his way by shipping interstellar cargo on the ship he’s inherited from his Uncle Virgil, a con man and thief who met with a fatal accident. Draycos has vowed to uncover those behind a vast conspiracy to wipe out his people, while Jack is determined to find out who framed him for a crime he didn’t commit. Virgil, who survives as ‘Uncle Virge’ in the ship’s computer, is against their plan. But Draycos once saved Jack’s life, so Jack feels an obligation to this strange creature who can slip onto the boy’s skin, pressing against it like a living tattoo. Knowing that mercenaries were involved in the ambush that killed Draycos’s fleet, Jack enlists in a mercenary outfit that practically enslaves adolescent recruits.

But the soldier’s life isn’t exactly what Jack had bargained for, especially when a mysterious girl is recruited into his group. Strange things are happening, and people and events are not always as they seem.

Dragon and Slave

Fourteen year old Jack Morgan has gone through a lot since he met Draycos, a dragon like K da warrior he saved when everyone else in Draycos scout fleet was killed in an ambush. Ever since, Jack and Draycos, who slips onto Jack’s back like a living tattoo, have been trying to track down the people responsible for the massacre.

On the planet Brum a dum Jack gets hired to work on a plantation owned by a Brummga whose family has ties to mercenary groups. One of those groups might have been involved in the ambush.

Jack s a terrific thief, and managed to do a passable imitation of a mercenary, but those talents don t help him much on the plantation. Here, he s just one of many slaves, with little hope of finding the information he came for. But that s not his biggest problem now. The slavemaster knows Jack s no ordinary slave, and has his eye on him. Jack, who s been in tight spots before, knows that can only mean trouble.

On the heavily fortified grounds of the alien plantation, there s no way to get out, and nobody to help him. Nobody, that is, except Draycos. Jack can only hope that s enough.

Dragon and Herdsman

Jack Morgan has had it rough. He was orphaned at three, then lost his Uncle Virgil ten years later. But the plucky fourteen year old didn t know what rough was until he met Draycos, sole survivor of an advance force of alien refugees that had been brutally ambushed over the world where Jack was in hiding from the authorities. The K da poet warrior needed to bond with a host, or he would die; the reformed boy thief and con artist needed a friend, someone he could depend on as he tried to clear his name. Since then they ve formed a unique team, determined to find and expose those responsible for the slaughter of Draycos’s team.

In the months since fate threw them together, they ve been through a lot. But when Jack tries to hack the computer in an office of the notorious Malison Ring, their quest nearly ends in the jaws of that mercenary organization s trap.

Luckily, Alison Kayna, a girl Jack had worked with as a reluctant mercenary for another outfit, comes to his rescue. Evading pursuit, they escape to the primitive world of Rho Scorvi, where she s planned a rendezvous with friends.

But at the edge of Rho Scorvi’s hundred mile wide forest, they make a shocking discovery: traveling with a group of the planet’s native Erassvas is a small lost colony of Draycos’s own race, the K’da. But unlike Draycos’s people, these K’da known as Phookas are slow, lethargic, and unintelligent. When the Malison Ring tracks Jack’s ship, the Essenay to Rho Scorvi, Jack realizes that unless he and Draycos and a reluctant Alison can lead the Phookas to safety in the forest, these unfortunate creatures will become the latest victims of the genocide that threatens to wipe out their entire race.

Jack has already been a thief, a soldier, and a slave. Now he must become a herdsman, protecting the Phookas from danger as they travel deep into the unexplored forest. But even more importantly, he must protect from the mercenaries and Alison the dark secret of the herd and Jack’s poet warrior ally. Only if they succeed do they stand a chance of surviving Rho Scorvi to continue their quest…

Dragon and Judge

Orphaned at the age of three, brought up by his Uncle Virgil, a con man, Jack Morgan has done things that are unusual even in the future in space. But when he rescued Draycos, a dragon like symbiont, from certain death, his life became a series of breathtaking adventures. With the help of Draycos, who can leap onto Jack’s back and become what looks like a tattoo, Jack has been doing everything he can to find out who ambushed the scout fleet of Draycos s people, the K da and Shontine, leaving Draycos the sole survivor. Now Jack thinks he may finally be on the trail of the information he needs. But before he can act on what he knows, he s kidnapped by aliens, who ask him to be a judge for them, as, they reveal to him, his parents had once been.

Jack s friend Alison Kayna and her newly acquired K da symbiont are also kidnapped, by the people trying to ambush the K’da/Shontine fleet. Her captors will do almost anything to learn from Alison where the fleet will rendezvous. Jack and Draycos must rescue her before Alison is hurt or worse. Using every trick in the book, Jack and Draycos race to her aid, but they aren’t able to eliminate the threat to the endangered fleet…
and precious time is running out!

Dragon and Liberator

In this exciting space adventure, fourteen year old Jack Morgan and Draycos, a poet/warrior K’da dragon who can hide himself as a tattoo on Jack’s back, have their backs to the wall. Brought together by a twist of fate, these two have been through a lot of scrapes, risking death and imprisonment on worlds far and wide, seeking justice for Jack and information that might save Draycos’s people from a genocidal ambush. But now, Neverlin, the man who killed Jack’s parents and destroyed the scout fleet of which Draycos was the sole survivor, is about to ambush millions of K’da refugees, and kill them with a Death weapon that kills any living being within its range. To prevent Neverlin from eradicating the K’da race, Jack and Draycos must somehow disable the Death.

But for Jack and Draycos, things never seem to go the way they should. When Jack’s friend Alison is captured, Jack gives himself up to keep her from being harmed. Neverlin, with Jack and Draycos as his prisoners, holds all the cards. But desperate times call for desperate measures, as time is running out, not just for our young heroes, but also for the millions of K’da who face annihilation, and resourceful Jack and his remarkable ally will fine a way…
or die trying.

A powerful, thrilling conclusion to this terrific Young Adult six book series. Fun for readers 10 and older.

Heir to the Empire

Here is a special 20th anniversary edition of the 1 New York Times bestselling novel that reignited the entire Star Wars publishing phenomenon featuring an Introduction and annotations from award winning author Timothy Zahn, exclusive commentary from Lucasfilm and Del Rey Books, and a brand new novella starring the ever popular Grand Admiral Thrawn. The biggest event in the history of Star Wars books, Heir to the Empire follows the adventures of Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Princess Leia after they led the Rebel Alliance to victory in Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi. Five years after the Death Star was destroyed and Darth Vader and the Emperor were defeated, the galaxy is struggling to heal the wounds of war, Princess Leia and Han Solo are married and expecting twins, and Luke Skywalker has become the first in a long awaited line of new Jedi Knights. But thousands of light years away, the last of the Emperor’s warlords the brilliant and deadly Grand Admiral Thrawn has taken command of the shattered Imperial fleet, readied it for war, and pointed it at the fragile heart of the New Republic. For this dark warrior has made two vital discoveries that could destroy everything the courageous men and women of the Rebel Alliance fought so hard to create. The explosive confrontation that results is a towering epic of action, invention, mystery, and spectacle on a galactic scale in short, a story worthy of the name Star Wars.

Dark Force Rising

The dying Empire’s most cunning and ruthless warlord Grand Admiral Thrawn has taken command of the remnants of the Imperial fleet and launched a massive campaign aimed at the New Republic’s destruction. With the aid of unimaginable weapons long hidden away by the Emperor on a backwater planet, Thrawn plans to turn the tide of battle, overwhelm the New Republic, and impose his iron rule throughout the galaxy. Meanwhile, Han and Lando Calrissian race against time to find proof of treason inside the highest Republic Council only to discover instead a ghostly fleet of warships that could bring doom to their friends and victory to their enemies. But most dangerous of all is a new Dark Jedi, risen from the ashes of a shrouded past, consumed by bitterness…
and thoroughly, utterly insane. The Dark Jedi schemes to use his awesome mastery of the Force to summon young Skywalker allay his misgivings, cunningly enthrall him, and ultimately corrupt him to the Dark Side.

The Last Command

The Last Command concludes the adaptation of Timothy Zahn’s best selling Thrawn Trilogy, drawing to a shattering climax the events set into motion in Heir to the Empire and Dark Force Rising. Thrawn is creating an army of genetically engineered shock troops in an effort to overwhelm the forces of the Rebellion. For a beleaguered Empire, desperate times call for desperate measures. Sowing discord among the fragile coalition of the New Republic, remnants of the once powerful Empire make one last play for victory. Having implicated the Bothans in an act of genocide, they now plan an attack on Han and Leia that is also to be blamed on the Bothans. If they are successful, the New Republic will be torn asunder. To prevent inevitable disaster, Luke, Leia, Han, and their friends must prove the Bothans innocent and reveal the Empire’s treachery. But time is running out. At its heart lies the most elaborate con of all: the rumor that the legendary Grand Admiral Thrawn, long believed dead, has returned to lead the Empire to a prophesied triumph. The news of Thrawn’s return is already rallying Empire forces against the New Republic. As Leia travels to a secret rendezvous with an Imperial commander who claims towant peace, Han and Lando Calrissian journey into enemy territory to learn the truth of Emberlene’s destruction. Meanwhile, Luke and Mara Jade infiltrate a hidden fortress where Thrawn’s most fanatical followers await his call to arms. And Talon Karrde returns to his underworld past and a brutal crime lord whose knowledge may save the Republic. But it is the truth about Thrawn that is most important. In his hands alive or dead rests the fate of the New Republic. It is a masterful re creation that captures the magic and adventure of the greatest science fiction saga of all time.

Specter of the Past

From Hugo Award winning author Timothy Zahn, whose unprecedented bestselling trilogy continued the saga of George Lucas’s blockbuster films and became a landmark in the history of science fiction publishing, comes a dramatic new chapter in the greatest science fiction epic ever told. Now Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, and Han Solo must battle to safeguard the fledgling New Republic from a dead Imperial warlord and from itself. Once the unquestioned master of countless solar systems, the Empire is tottering on the brink of total collapse. Once commanding an invincible armada of Star Destroyers, its fleet has been reduced to a skeleton force. Day by day, neutral systems are rushing to join the New Republic coalition. But with the end of the war in sight, the New Republic has fallen victim to its own success. An unwieldy alliance of races and traditions, the confederation now finds itself riven by age old animosities. Princess Leia struggles against all odds to hold the New Republic together. But she has powerful enemies. An ambitious Moff Disra leads a conspiracy to divide the uneasy coalition with an ingenious plot to blame the Bothans for a heinous crime that could lead to genocide and civil war. At the same time, Luke Skywalker, along with Lando Calrissian and Talon Karrde, pursues a mysterious group of pirate ships whose crews consist of clones. And then comes the most startling news of all: Grand Admiral Thrawn believed to be dead for ten years is reported alive. The most cunning and ruthless warlord in Imperial history has seemingly returned to lead the Empire to triumph. As Han and Leia try to prevent the unraveling of the New Republic in the face of this fearful and inexplicable threat from the past, Luke sets out to track down the rogue pirate ships. Written by beloved Star Wars veteran Alan Dean Foster, and starring a new character from the upcoming movie, The Approaching Storm tells the story of that daring mission. The Republic is decaying, even under the leadership of Supreme Chancellor Palpatine, who was elected to save the galaxy from collapsing under the forces of discontent. On the tiny but strategic planet of Ansion, a powerful faction is on the verge of joining the growing secessionist movement. The urban dwellers wish to expand into the prairies outside their cities the ancestral territory of the fierce, independent Ansion nomads. If their demands are not met, they will secede an act that could jump start a chain reaction of withdrawal and rebellion by other worlds of the Republic. At the Chancellor’s request, the Jedi Council sends two Jedi Knights, Obi Wan Kenobi and Luminara Unduli, to resolve the conflict and negotiate with the elusive nomads. Undaunted, Obi Wan and Luminara, along with their Padawans Anakin Skywalker and Barriss Offee, set out across the wilderness. Many perils lie waiting to trap them. Tatooine Ghost

Han Solo and Leia Organa take center stage, and stunning revelations from the past play a critical role in shaping the future, as the New York Times bestselling author of Star Wars: The New Jedi Order: Star by Star now turns to a crucial chapter in the classic Star Wars saga. The deaths of Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine, and victory at the Battle of Endor by no means spelled the end of the Empire. In the aftermath, the New Republic has faced a constant struggle to survive and grow. And now a new threat looms: a masterpiece of Alderaanian art lost in transit after the planet’s destruction has resurfaced on the black market. Offered at auction, it will command a handsome price…
but its greatest value lies in the vital secret it conceals the key to a code used to communicate with New Republic agents deep undercover within the Empire. Discovery of the key by Imperial forces would spell certain disaster. The only option is recovery and Han, Leia, Chewbacca, and C 3PO have been dispatched to Tatooine to infiltrate the auction. But trouble is waiting when they arrive: an Imperial Star Destroyer is orbiting Tatooine on the lookout for Rebels; a mysterious stranger at the auction seems to recognize Leia; and an Imperial officer s aggressive bidding for the Alderaanian painting could foil the Solos mission. When a dispute erupts into violence, and the painting vanishes in the chaos, Han and Leia are thrust into a desperate race to reclaim it before Imperial troops or a band of unsavory treasure peddlers get there first. Dangerous as the chase is, for Leia it leads into especially dark territory. Already haunted by the specter of her infamous father, and fearful that his evil may infect future generations, she has suffered a disturbing Force vision of Luke turning to the dark side. As she battles beside Han against marauding TIE fighters, encroaching stormtroopers, and Tatooine s savage Tusken Raiders, Leia s struggle with the warring emotions inside her culminates in the discovery of an extraordinary link to the past. And as long buried secrets and truths at last emerge, she faces a moment of reckoning that will forever alter her destiny…

Outbound Flight

It began as the ultimate voyage of discovery only to become the stuff of lost Republic legend…
and a dark chapter in Jedi history. Now, at last, acclaimed author Timothy Zahn returns to tell the whole extraordinary story of the remarkable and doomed Outbound Flight Project.

The Clone Wars have yet to erupt when Jedi Master Jorus C baoth petitions the Senate for support of a singularly ambitious undertaking. Six Jedi Masters, twelve Jedi Knights, and fifty thousand men, women, and children will embark aboard a gargantuan vessel, equipped for years of travel on a mission to contact intelligent life and colonize undiscovered worlds beyond the known galaxy. The government bureaucracy threatens to scuttle the expedition before it can even start until Master C baoth foils a murderous conspiracy plot, winning him the political capital he needs to set in motion the dream of Outbound Flight.

Or so it would seem. For unknown to the famed Jedi Master, the successful launch of the mission is secretly being orchestrated by an unlikely ally: the evil Sith Lord, Darth Sidious, who has his own reasons for wanting Outbound Flight to move forward…
and, ultimately, to fail.

Yet Darth Sidious is not the mission’s most dangerous challenge. Once underway, the starship crosses paths at the edge of Unknown Space with the forces of the alien Chiss Ascendancy and the brilliant mastermind best known as Thrawn. Even Jedi Knight Obi Wan Kenobi, aboard Outbound Flight with his young Padawan student, Anakin Skywalker, cannot help avert disaster. Thus what begins as a peaceful Jedi mission is violently transformed into an all out war for survival against staggering odds and the most diabolical of adversaries.

Timothy Zahn s unique mix of espionage, political gamesmanship, and deadly interstellar combat breathes electrifying life into a Star Wars legend.

Star Wars

Never before has the incendiary mix of action, politics, and intrigue that has become Timothy Zahn’s trademark, been mmore evident that in this new Star Wars epic. On the heels of the stunning events chronicled in Star Wars: A New Hope, the newly minted heroes of the Rebellion-fledgling Jedi Luke Skywalker, smuggler turned reluctant freedom-fighter Han Solo, and Princess Leia Organa, a bold leader with a world to avenge-must face the harsh realities of the cataclysmic conflict into which they have so bravely plunged. From this point forward, legends will grow, treachery will abound, and lives will be irrevocably altered, in the long, hard fight to counter the fist of tyranny and restore hope to a galaxy too long in darkness.

The destruction of the Death Star by the Rebel Alliance was a decisive blow against the Empire, but Palpatine and his monstrous enforcer, Darth Vader, are no less of a threat. The brutal extermination of Alderaan not only demonstrated the magnitude of their murderous power, but served as a chilling testament to their resolve to crush the Rebel uprising. Standing against them, Skywalker, Solo, and the Princess remain uncertain opponents. Luke is gifted and brave, but unschooled in the power he possesses. Han has doubts about waging someone else’s war-and his contentiousness is one more burden for Leia to bear as she struggles to help keep the Rebellion alive. The three have been sent to mediate a dispute between Rebel Alliance factions in Shelsha Sector-agitating matters by forcing Han to deal not only with pirates, but with his more dreaded enemy, politics. At the same time, Mara Jade-all of eighteen and years away from her fateful meeting with Luke-is serving her evil master, Palpatine, well in her role as the Emperor’s Hand: tracking suspected treachery in the Empire to what may be high places-while trying to stay out of Darth Vader’s way.

But the Rebels will prove to be only one of the Empire’s concerns. For Imperial Stormtrooper Daric LaRone, his faith in the Empire shaken by the wanton destruction of Alderaan, will commit a sudden and violent act of defiance, and take four other enforcers with him, in a desperate bid to elude their masters’ wrath.

Each of these fateful actions, whether sanctioned, secret, or scandalous, will expose brutality and corruption, spur upheavals destined to shake the Empire to its core, and shape momentous events yet to come.
