Stuart M. Kaminsky Books Overview

Bullet for a Star

Hard boiled Hollywood detective Toby Peters finds himself hobnobbing with the luminaries of the silver screen when someone is littering Tinsel Town with corpses and Peters has to put himself between Errol Flynn and a bullet. First published in 1977, Peters’ first case has been out of print since 1987.

Murder on the Yellow Brick Road

FIRST TRADE PAPERBACK EDITION BY EDGAR AWARD WINNING AUTHOR STUART KAMINSKY Someone had murdered a Munchkin. The little man was lying on his back in the middle of the yellow brick road with his startled eyes looking into the overhead lights of an M.G.M. sound stage. He might have looked kind of cute in a tinsel town way if it hadn t been for the knife sticking out of his chest. The year is 1940, and Los Angeles based private eye Toby Peters has been called before the real life Wizard of Oz himself Louis B. Mayer, legendary studio head of Metro Goldwyn Mayer. His job: to track down a murderer stalking the back lots of one of Hollywood’s most powerful movie companies. Peters sets to work, plumbing the depths of a world of dreamers, child stars, and half sized philosophers, helped by none other than Clark Gable, Raymond Chandler, and Judy Garland. It s a treacherous trail of clues that Peters must follow one as winding as the Yellow Brick Road, and deadlier than a field of poppies. But does Toby Peters possess enough brains, heart, and courage to solve this bizarre case before he becomes the latest victim of Hollywood s new Wicked Witch of the West…
? Spade and Marlowe have had plenty of imitators, but I think Stuart Kaminsky has come up with a true heir…
Kaminsky adroitly blends imaginative fiction with real Hollywood characters. St. Louis Post Dispatch Shades of Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett. The Howard Hughes Affair

The papers in this volume focus on two central issues in the philosophy of law, the relationship between law and morality, and crime and punishment. In the essay that gives the title to this volume, it is argued that, although in many legal systems there are in fact significant connections between law and morality, these connections are not conceptually or logically necessary. They depend on various social practices. Ronald Dworkin’s famous attempt to undermine the legal positivist’s separation of law from morality is rejected, and it is argued that Dworkin’s own positive theory of law may indeed be quite compatible with certain versions of legal positivism. Other essays explore the notion of a wicked legal system, the rule of law, and various perspectives on the nature of law. The essays on crime and punishment discuss the theory and practice of punishment. They extend the work done in the author’s earlier book, ‘Crime, Guilt and Punishment’. They reject a purely retributive justification of punishment, in spite of the increasing sophistication in its recent formulations.

Never Cross a Vampire

PI Toby Peters is as usual down on his luck in World War II era Hollywood, when his strangest case ever suddenly swoops in. It seems that someone is sending the mysterious master of the night, Bela Lugosi, threatening letters and a bat in a box with a stake through its heart. Boris Karloff asks Toby to take the case, and it’s not long before Toby and Bela find themselves tangling with a demonically devoted group of vampire fans called the Dark Knights of Transylvania. Meanwhile, William Faulkner is being acused of killing a literary agent, after the murder weapon was found in his hotel room. Toby suddenly finds himself up to his neck in work. But could the two cases be connected? Figuring that one out could drive him batty, as a trail of clues leads him straight to Bedelia Sue Frye, a vivacious vixen who likes to make love dressed as a vampire!

High Midnight

Someone wants Gary Cooper to make a movie he isn’t interested in making, and whoever it is wants him badly enough to get nasty about it. Cooper takes to the hills, accompanied by a writer named Ernest Hemingway, chased by men with blood in their eyes and murder in their hearts. The problem is that Cooper can’t shoot straight and Hemingway can’t operate without native bearers and an elephant gun. Toby Peters can’t shoot either, but he doesn’t need help much. Just give him a bowl of cereal and time to decide his next move and Toby will get everything straightened out. Now, if he can only keep Lombardi the gangster from making good on his threat to turn him into kosher hot dogs.

He Done Her Wrong

As a private detective, Toby Peters has had some pretty impressive clients over the years but none of them has been quite as memorable as his latest: A tough as nails, sharp witted, damsel in distress named Mae West. Mae, it seems, has discovered that her only copy of her sizzling autobiography is missing. And when Peters’ brother, Phil, is forced to ask for his help, the private eye agreed to track it down. But after taking a beating from a man named Tessner a thief, a master of disguise and, even more dangerous, a frustratced actor Peter rcalises that his job is just beginning. Following the trail of Mae’s scandalous memoirs soon leads Peters into the midst of a family feud of Herculean proportions and a California sanitorium, from which he must make a daring escape worthy of Ressner himself…

The Fala Factor

Convinced that her famous Scottish terrier, Fala, has been kidnapped and replaced with an inferior pooch, Eleanor Roosevelt asks L.A. private eye Toby Peters to find the real Fala. NYT.

Smart Moves

Hollywood gumshoe Toby Peters is charged, along with FBI agents Spade and Archer, with the dangerous duty of protecting the lives of both Albert Einstein and Paul Robeson from scheming Na*zis.

Think Fast, Mr. Peters

The Melting Clock

Tie into this month’s Toby Peters mystery hardcover, The Devil Met a Lady, with his 16th adventure. Surrealist painter Salvador Dali enlists Toby’s help in retrieving three stolen paintings from thieves Dali hired as a publicity stunt.

The Devil Met a Lady

This is the Audiobook CASSETTE Library Edition in vinyl case. ”I’m here,” came a familiar voice. I turned…
and found myself looking at Bette Davis no more than a half a dozen feet in front of me. She strode forward around two couples and stood in front of me with a smile that could kill. The orchestra had picked up the theme and it was hard to hear her as she said, ”Why are you following me?” Why has the fabulous Bette Davis, the best known face in the world behind Roosevelt and Hitler, been kidnapped not once, not twice, but three times? What in the world does this star abduction have to do with Third Reich designs on America’s plans for a top secret superbomber? And who better than Hollywood private eye Toby Peters to plunge into this hair raising adventure in pursuit of the answers? Spending about a third of his waking time on the phone and another third on his back usually in hospitals, Peters penetrates a hapless spy ring composed of fourth rate Tinseltown tough guys. He delves far too deeply for his own good into the bedroom peccadillos of America’s glitter set. And, as bodies stack up around him, he sets off to the rescue of a movie goddess. But who’ll protect Toby Peters from the divine Miss Davis?

Dancing in the Dark

Fred Astaire hires Toby Peters to help him get rid of an incredibly untalented dance student, whose tutelage he has been forced to undertake by her threatening mafioso boyfriend. K. PW.

A Fatal Glass of Beer

W. C. Fields hires private eye Toby Peters to nab the culprit who is robbing him one bank account at a time, but while on the thief’s trail, the two find out there is another bad guy who does not want the money, but rather wants both of them dead.

To Catch A Spy

With a hilarious new Hollywood thriller and in the hire of the urbane, amusing screen star Cary Grant, private investigator Toby Peters continues a madcap career that has cast him as sleuth to such movie luminaries as Humphrey Bogart, the Marx Brothers, Bette Davis, Mae West, and Charlie Chaplin. Like many a movie mystery, this one begins in the middle of the night, when Toby, trying to deliver a package at Grant’s behest, finds himself with a corpse on his hands, a lump on his head, and an odd message from a dying man. Now in pursuit of a murderer, Toby and Grant, who proves to be no less acrobatic than he is resourceful, follow a trail of clues that leads them eventually to a den of Na*zi sympathizers and finally to a nighttime confrontation on a mountaintop with a very determined and formidably well armed killer. As always, Toby can count on the aid of his friends: the unsanitary dentist Shelly Minck, with whom Toby shares an office; the huge wrestler turned poet Jerry Butler; the suave Swiss little person Gunther Whertman, who has mastered as many languages as he has skills; and Mrs. Irene Plaut, Toby s daffy but dogged landlady. As always, too, all four lend Toby their loyalty and support, although they are more likely to add to the chaos. Kaminsky has such a good time writing, and he so loves the period, that the reader is swept along willy nilly. New York Times Book Review Makes the totally wacky possible…
. Peters is an unblemished delight. Washington Post

Now You See It

Illusion gets more deadly than reality on Toby Peters’s twenty fourth outing from Edgar winning author Stuart M. Kaminsky. A string of star studded successes most recently with Cary Grant in To Catch a Spy and an edgy Joan Crawford in Mildred Pierced has won Tinseltown detective Toby Peters a bit of local celebrity, and that s something his new client, Harry Blackstone, understands. At the Pantages Theater in Los Angeles, Blackstone is billed as the World s Greatest Living Magician. Of course, should the giant buzz saw in the climax to Blackstone s act cut the beautiful young woman in fact in half, his sterling reputation would be ruined. And someone among the Los Angeles Friends of Magic is decidedly intent upon ruining it whatever the price, including the life of Toby s prime suspect. Unfortunately, with the corpse count mounting, the evidence is pointing increasingly to Toby s client as the man behind the murders. As always, adding to the wackiness of Toby s investigation are the ungentle dentist Sheldon Minck, wrestler poet Jeremy Butler, the suave, small statured Swiss multilingualist Gunter Wherthman, and daffy Mrs. Plaut. But to solve the case, Toby finds he needs someone else the dashing star of the movie A Thousand and One Nights, Cornel Wilde.

Lieberman’s Thief

In this fourth book of the Abe Lieberman Mystery series, the Chicago police detective finds he must catch a thief to nab a killer. George ‘Pitty Pitty’ Patnik was a thief who thought he had everything planned for a nice, clean in and out burglary. But that was before he heard the screams and saw the blood. Before the long knife came down again and again. Before the murderer realized he had an audience. Now Pitty Pitty is on the run from the clever Lieberman who has figured it all out, from the murderer, and from the awful memories of what he’s seen.

Lieberman’s Law

Abe Lieberman, the Chicago PD detective, has never has it easy when it comes to emotional cases, but this time the action is getting little too close to home. His temple has been vandalized along with four others, and it looks like the vandals have more sinister plans in mind. Finding the culprit opens a window on the broiling ethnic tensions on Chicago’s North Side, and what’s happening in Abe’s family life does nothing to turn down the heat. If he and his partner, Hanrahan, can locate the vandals who have targeted the city’s Jews, they may be able to put a stop to some of the madness before violence enters the picture.

The Big Silence

Abe Lieberman is a strong, sympathetic character, an Everyman whose love for his family is only matched by his quiet, zealous commitment to justice: ‘A figure out of Talmudic lore endearing, wise in his crotchets, weary with his wisdom.’ says The Washington Post. He loves what he does and it takes its toll as his commitment to what is right is sorely tested every day on the mean streets of Chicago. As a moral man, he is sometimes faced with some uncomfortable ethical choices in order to see that justice rather than the letter of the law is metered out. The Big Silence takes Lieberman and his Irish partner, Bill Hanrahan the Rabbi and the Priest, as they are known on the streets on a journey that will test their consciences to the limit. When the young son of an informant in a governmental witness protection program is kidnapped and a grisly death occurs, they will have to make some hard choices to make things right. Told with compassion and with the keen insight into the human psyche, The Big Silence is gritty, compelling…
and unforgettable.

Not Quite Kosher

An Abe Lieberman mysteryAbe Lieberman is a strong, sympathetic character, an Everyman whose love for his family is only matched by his quiet, zealous commitment to justice. ‘A figure out of Talmudic lore endearing, wise in his crotchets, weary with his wisdom,’ says The Washington Post. He loves what he does, but it takes its toll as his commitment to what is right is sorely tested every day on the mean streets of Chicago. As a moral man, he is sometimes faced with some uncomfortable ethical choices in order to see that justice rather than the letter of the law is meted out. And in Not Quite Kosher, the latest Abe Lieberman mystery by veteran Edgar Award winning Stuart Kaminsky, our hangdog sleuth is up to his eyeballs in tsurris, the kind of trouble that will drive a man to madness. From tracking a pair of low rent thieves who stumble into a heist way over their heads to finding out what happened to a man who predicted his own death in a bizarre twist of fate, not to mention planning for a grandson’s bar mitzvah that threatens to send him to the poorhouse, Lieberman will do much to find a way to make everything right, even if it takes years off his life. And his Irish partner, Bill Hanrahn, the Priest to Lieberman’s Rabbi, is in trouble of his own making. For the woman he loves is the object of affection of one of the kingpins of the Asian crime syndicate in Chicago and the notion of this woman marrying anyone from a different culture is anathema. How far will he go to win the woman he loves? And at what cost?Just another day in the lives of a pair of Chicago’s most amiably odd detective team…

The Last Dark Place

Abe Lieberman is a veteran Chicago detective who prefers to use his head and heart more than his gun. He and his Irish partner, Bill Hanrahan, are known on the streets as the Rabbi and thePriest and their commitment to justice is sorely tested everyday. The extradition of a mob enforcer goes horribly awry when he is gunned down at the airport…
while Lieberman is escorting him. A police officer’s wife is raped and Lieberman and Hanrahan have to find the perp before the hearbroken, furious cop settles the matter himself. Lieberman and Hanrahan struggle with one vital question: which is better, to be a Just man or to be the instrument of the Law?And if that’s not enough angst, somewhere in all this Lieberman has to plan a bar mitzvah that will surely bankrupt him…
.

Terror Town

Carl Zwick is an aging Chicago Cubs baseball player. Sometimes he feels like he’s spent his life hitting into double plays, but he’s finally gotten onto the right track. Then tragedy strikes him out. Anita Mills is a pretty single black mother just trying to get by. A random act of brutality in one of Chicago’s rougher neighborhoods permanently ends her struggle. Richard Allen Smith walks the streets of ChiTown saying God has sent him. He has an unusual, rather nasty way of getting converts to see the light. What do these people have in common? Nothing, it would seem, except they are all part of Detective Abe Lieberman’s very long day. Lieberman, a sad, baggy eyed spaniel of a man with the patience of Job and the wisdom of Solomon is trying his best to make his beloved Chicago a better place. But when Lieberman and his partner, Bill Hanrahan, encounter these three very different situations they find that there are ties that bind and ties that can cut a man’s heart out. Abe Lieberman faces a Gordian knot that he must somehow untangle and if he makes a mistake, someone very near to him could die.

The Dead Don’t Lie

The Dead Don’t Lie is the latest in Edgar Award winner and MWA’s Grand Master Stuart Kaminsky’s Abe Lieberman mystery series. Lieberman and his partner, Bill Hanrahan, are hell or heaven bent on making the mean streets of Chicago just a little safer. As usual they have their hands full. Three prominent members of the Turkish community are all brutally murdered and Lieberman must find out what, if anything, ties these murders together. It doesn’t help that the key to the puzzle might be an event that took place over a century ago. Bill Hanrahan finds himself assigned to a case where a hospitalized chef claims to have been beaten by two people and shot by a third, a bespectacled Chinese man. As Bill digs deeper he finds himself at odds with an old nemesis, a man who has an unusual affinity for Bill’s wife.
Both Lieberman and Hanrahan struggle to do the right thing even if it means bending the letter, not the spirit, of the law.

Dead of Winter

Detective Mac Taylor is a dedicated and driven crime scene investigator who believes that everything is connected and everyone has a story. He and his partner, Detective Stella Bonasera, lead a team of experts through the gritty and kinetic world of New York City. These skilled investigators, who see New York in a unique light, follow the evidence as they piece together clues and eliminate doubt to ultimately crack their cases. The body of a middle aged man is found in the elevator of a ritzy doorman building on the Upper East Side. Mac Taylor and Aiden Burn’s initial investigation yields no bullets, no DNA evidence, and no motive. Could this be the perfect crime? Meanwhile, only a few blocks away, Stella Bonasera and Danny Messer investigate the murder of a witness being held in protective custody. The law enforcement officers on duty swear that the victim spent the night in a locked hotel room only to be found dead in the morning. From the heart of midtown to the outer boroughs, the New York CSI team must piece together the evidence and solve two puzzling crimes in the city that never sleeps.

Blood on the Sun

Detective Mac Taylor is a dedicated crime scene investigator who believes that everything is connected and everyone has a story. He and Detective Stella Bonasera lead a team of crack forensic experts through the gritty and kinetic world of New York City as they piece together clues and eliminate doubt to ultimately crack their cases. A modest home in a suburban Queens neighborhood is the unlikely site of a grisly crime scene: a married couple and their daughter are found brutally murdered. Missing from the scene is the couple’s young son, and Mac Taylor and Danny Messer soon uncover signs of a possible kidnapping. Can they find him before it’s too late? In a heavily Orthodox Jewish neighborhood in Brooklyn, the body of a devoutly religious man is found ritually displayed on the floor of his synagogue. Stella Bonasera and Aiden Burn initially suspect a fringe fundamentalist group that has had run ins with the victim’s congregation, but the group is led by a charismatic and antagonistic man who does everything he can to stonewall the team’s investigation. Two very different crimes, with one thing in common: CSI investigators who won’t stop until they uncover the truth.

Deluge

Days and nights of heavy spring rain threaten to cripple New York City. Neighborhoods are experiencing periodic blackouts. People have been reported electrocuted by fallen power lines. Flooding of some subway lines has stopped trains in their tracks. And in the midst of the Deluge, the CSI team has three cases to solve. Mac Taylor and Don Flack are on the trail of the perpetrator of a string of grisly murders with one thing in common: initials carved into the victims’ bodies. When an unusual connection is found between the victims’ lives, Mac realizes the killer isn’t finished not by a long shot. Lindsay Monroe and Danny Messer investigate the death of a teacher at an exclusive Manhattan private school. The victim seems like everyone’s favorite teacher on the surface but they soon uncover a darker secret lurking beneath. Stella Bonasera and Sheldon Hawkes are on site at a suspicious building collapse when shifting rubble traps Hawkes in a deep pit with a mysterious stranger. Tensions rise as their oxygen starts to run out…
. The intrepid members of New York’s crack forensic team must race against time and the elements to bring three very different criminals to justice.

Four Walls (By:Keith R.A. DeCandido)

Detectives Mac Taylor, Danny Messer, Sheldon Hawkes, and Don Flack are called in to investigate a double homicide at a medium security facility on Staten Island. Racial tensions turned the prison into a pressure cooker that finally boiled over in an all too lethal fashion, leaving two inmates dead. One of the killings is an open and shut case, complete with eyewitnesses; but the other, the murder of a former cop, defies easy answers. Initial investigation of the crime scene points to one cause of death, but the CSI team’s scientific methods uncover something completely different and wholly unexpected…
. On the other edge of the city, Stella Bonasera and Lindsay Monroe look into the murder of a young woman who worked at a popular Italian bakery in the Bronx. They find the perfect suspect almost immediately: a frequent customer who spent a lot of time flirting with the victim and who previously had been arrested for a violent crime. Yet Stella can’t help but think that their perfect suspect is just a little too perfect for such a messy murder…
. Nothing is as it seems as New York City’s dedicated crime scene investigators piece together the clues and examine the evidence to discover the true killers in their midst.

Vengeance

Three years ago Lew Fonseca quit his job as a process server with the State Attourney’s Office in Cook County, Illinois, and drove his rattling Toyota south to escape the memories of his beloved late wife. Headed for Key West, the Toyota broke down in a Dairy Queen parking lot in Sarasota, Florida. Buoyed by the friendship of a few trustworthy souls, Lew settled there, making ends meet by doing some investigative work for local attourneys. Now, Lew is hired by Carl Sebastian, one of Lew’s lawyer’s clients, to find his missing wife. Following up on a few leads, Lew finds himself being trailed by a mysterious burly man, and saddled with another missing person case this time a runaway teen. With the help of some friends, Lew seems to be getting closer and closer to Melanie but will he find her before the unthinkable happens?

Retribution

Stuart M. Kaminsky, the veteran author of more than forty novels and the creator of such wonderful characters as Abe Lieberman, Toby Peters, and Inpsector Rostnikov, has created a new PI: Lew Fonesca, a world weary guy who got in a car and just started driving after his wife died and wound up in front of a Dairy Queen in Sarasota, Florida.

He now makes his way amid bail jumpers and lost wives, people who want to be found and those who will do anything to stay under their rock. He spends his days solving cases both big and small and trying to get by, while attempting to figure out how to make the rest of his life make sense.

Retribution not only picks up where the first novel in the series, Vengeance, left off, but raises the bar big time. Lew has solved his share of cases, and most of them to his pride have wound up having happy endings; in Vengeance, he saved a young runaway who has had a childhood nobody should ever have, and she finally seems to be turning her life around. But when she becomes involved with a reclusive best selling author and several valuable manuscripts disappear, Lew knows that young Melanie is in way over her head. And if he doesn’t act fast, not only could a few reputations get tarnished the bodies might start piling up.

Midnight Pass

Lew Fonesca is a guy just trying to get along. When his wife died in a senseless auto wreck, he got up and left his old life and when his car gave out in sunny Sarasota, Florida, he stayed. He takes small process serving gigs and various odd jobs helping people out, and he tries, although maybe not as hard as he should, to fix the gaping hole in his heart. But for a man who just wants to ease through life without any complications, Lew has a pretty full plate. The shrink that Lew’s been seeing for more than a year wants him to finally dump all the grief that he’s carrying around so he can have more than a half life. And Sally, the pretty single mom and social worker who has helped Lew in the past, wants to deepen their friendship. On top of that, a local minister asks him to find a town council member who has gone missing just before a crucial vote that could ruin a struggling community, and a distraught father comes to Lew to track down his wife and two kids, whom Lew suspects ran off with the man’s best friend. When people start showing up dead, Lew knows he’s in way over his head and this time he may not be able make it all come out okay.

Denial

Lew Fonesca is a man who does things for people. He makes small problems go away and tries to keep the larger ones from landing his clients in jail. He finds deadbeats, errant spouses, and generally keeps the populace of Sarasota on the up and up. Now Lew is faced with one case that will try his patience…
and another that may break his heart. The first involves an elderly woman who swears she’s witnessed a murder in her old age home despite the fact that everyone she tells her story to: her family, the hospital staff, and finally the cops all tell her that it just couldn’t have happened. The other has Lew trying to find out the identity of a hit and run driver who killed a 14 year old boy. This task dredges up old memories and a lot of pain, for Lew fled Chicago years ago, after a drunk driver killed his beloved wife. As Lew begins to dig deeper into both cases he finds that they are tied together in ways he can’t hope to untangle. And when someone tries to run him down, Lew knows that he’s getting close to some nasty home truths and he is going to have get the answers if he is to survive.
