Patricia C. Wrede Books Overview

Sorcery & Cecelia, or The Enchanted Chocolate Pot

A great deal is happening in London this season. For starters, there’s the witch who tried to poison Kate at Sir Hilary’s induction into the Royal College of Wizards. Since when does hot chocolate burn a hole straight through one’s dress?! Then there’s Dorothea. Is it a spell that’s made her the toast of the town or could it possibly have something to do with the charm bag under Oliver’s bed? And speaking of Oliver, just how long can Cecelia and Kate make excuses for him? Ever since he was turned into a tree, he hasn’t bothered to tell anyone where he is! The girls might think it all a magical nightmare…
if only they weren’t having so much fun.

The Grand Tour

Kate and Cecy and their new husbands, Thomas and James, are off on a Grand Tour. Their plans? To leisurely travel about the Continent, take in a few antiquities, and of course purchase fabulous Parisian wardrobes.

But once they arrive in France, mysterious things start to happen. Cecy receives a package containing a lost coronation treasure, Thomas’s valet is assaulted, and Kate loses a glove. Soon it becomes clear that they have stumbled upon a dastardly, magical plot to take over Europe.

Now the four newlyweds must embark on a daring chase to thwart the evil conspiracy. And there’s no telling the trouble they’ll get into along the way. For when you mix Kate and Cecy and magic, you never know what’s going to happen next!

The Mislaid Magician

Ten years have passed since Kate and Cecy married Thomas and James, and England is now being transformed by the first railways. When the Duke of Wellington asks James to look into the sudden disappearance of a German railway engineer, James and Cecy’s search reveals a shocking truth: The railway lines are wreaking havoc with ancient underground magic, which could endanger the very unity of England. Meanwhile, Kate has her hands full taking care of all their children, not to mention the mysterious mute girl they rescued from a kidnapper! Written in letters between Kate and Cecy and between their husbands this installment of the cousins’ adventures is another satisfying blend of magic, mystery, adventure, humor, and romance.

Daystar has never seen his mother, Cimorene, actually perform magic. Nor has he ever known her to enter the Enchanted Forest in all the years they have lived on its edge. That is not until a wizard shows up at their cottage shortly after Daystar’s sixteenth birthday. Much to Daystar’s surprise, Cimorene melts the unsavory fellow. And the following day, she comes out of the Enchanted Forest carrying a sword. With that and little else, she sends him off into adventure.

Dragonsbane / Dealing with Dragons

Cimorene, the daughter of a very proper king, runs away and becomes the princess of a very powerful dragon, Kazul. A decidedly diverting novel with plenty of action and many slightly skewed fairy tale conventions that add to the laugh out loud reading pleasure and give the story a wide appeal. Booklist

Searching for Dragons / Dragon Search

Read by a full castApprox. 6 hours4 cassettesA diverting and ingenious sequel to Dealing With Dragons. Those wicked wizards are at it again! This time they are draining power from the Enchanted Forest. And that does not sit well with Mendanbar the King. On the advice of the witch Morwen, Mendanbar decides to consult with Kazul, the King of Dragons. When he arrives at Kazul’s cave, he meets Princess Cimorene and learns that Kazul has been captured by those horrible wizards. Mendanbar and Cimorene will have to search for her, traveling over mountains and past man eating giants, terrifying rock snakes, and an assortment of magic wielders.

Calling on Dragons

The third of four volumes in the critically acclaimed Enchanted Forest Chronicles. Queen Cimorene, Morwen the witch, and a host of other characters once again foil the plots of the perfidious wizards in this third volume of the Enchanted Forest Chronicles. This time the dastardly wizards have stolen King Mendanbar’s magic sword, vital to the health of the forest, right out of the castle armory. Morwen joins Cimorene, Kazul, Telemain, several cats, and Killer on a quest to retrieve the sword. Meanwhile, back at home, the forces of the wizards are gathering.

Thirteenth Child

Eff was born a Thirteenth Child. Her twin brother, Lan, is the seventh son of a seventh son. This means he’s supposed to possess amazing talent and she’s supposed to bring doom to everyone around her. Undeterred, her family moves to the frontier, where her father will be a professor of magic at a school perilously close to the magical divide that protects settlers from the beasts of the wilderness. Eff and Lan do not know what awaits them in such an unknown place. There are steam dragons that hover in the sky, and strange creatures that could undermine the homesteaders’ very existence. Eff is allowed to learn magic with the other students but there’s always the threat of it going horribly wrong. As a Thirteenth Child, Eff always feels one short step away from complete ruin. As Eff and Lan grow older, they face challenges they never could have dreamed of. And then their magic is put to the test in a standoff that will alter their lives forever.

Across the Great Barrier

From New York Times 1 bestselling author Patricia C. Wrede, the second in the series of magic on the western frontier. Eff is riding west, away from the safety of the frontier city she’s always known…
. Eff could be a powerful magician if she wanted to. Except she’s not sure she wants that kind of responsibility. Everyone keeps waiting for her to do something amazing or to fail in a spectacular way. Worse, her twin brother, Lan, a powerful double seventh son, is jealous of all the attention she’s been getting. Even as Eff protests that she’s just an ordinary girl, she’s asked to travel past the Barrier Spell with one of the new professors at her father’s school. The land west of the Barrier is full of dangers, both magical and wild. Eff will need to use all her strength magical and otherwise to come safely back home. With wit, magic, and a touch of good pioneer sense, Patricia C. Wrede once again weaves a fantastic tale of the very wild west.

Retrieving her mother’s ring is a simple matter but getting it home again will prove no easy task. There are dark forces at work in the Lyra, determined to claim the ring for their own. She will need to discover the secret of the ring before she returns to the mountains she loves. Otherwise, she shall not leave the city streets with body, soul and heart intact…
