Steve Barlow and Steve Skidmore Books Overview

Stone Me!

This hilarious and informative story presents a modern day spin on the ancient Greek myth of Medusa as well as an insightful look into school life and student/teacher relations. Fellow students Perce and Andy are instantly suspicious when Ms. Dusa, a woman sporting a large turban that covers her hair, shows up to teach at their school. Their suspicions quickly turn to concern as they witness several of their classmates getting turned to stone, and when none of their teachers seem to notice, the duo decides to take action and stop the 21st century Medusa.

Mind the Door!

Teachers love how clean the new caretaker Mr. O’Taur is keeping the school, but students Andy and Perce aren’t so sure about the muscled caretaker with a ring in his nose. Too many accidents occur when Mr. O’Taur is around and anyone who ventures through the door in office to the boiler room isn’t seen again. Coupled with amusing illustrations, the legend of the Minotaur comes to life in this comical, modern adaptation for young readers.

A Touch of Wind

In this clever take on Greek myths, schoolmates Perce, Andy, Willard, and Eddie think their school field trip to cold, wet, and dreary Bogmouth is the pits. Things go from bad to worse when the boys meet a strange old man on the beach, who turns out to be Odysseus. Harrowing adventures ensue when the foursome finds itself in the midst of Odysseus’s voyages, where they help him outwit Circe and her magic potions, the Sirens and their shipwrecking songs, and the cycloptic giant Polyphemos.

Must Fly!

Icarus is transported into the modern world. Unfortunately, he changes places with Andy, and unless Perce and the others think fast, Andy is stuck in Ancient Greece.

Star Bores!

A story of unbelievable heroism, villany and unlimited merchandising opportunities! The cast of characters includes Princess Liar, a hero*ine with a truth problem, Dark Visor, a mutant in a motorcycle helmet, and Hans Zup, a surrender oriented hero and his ship, the Millennium Bug.

Vernon Bright and the Magnetic Banana

It started with a banana…
and now Vernon Bright has managed to turn himself into a living magnet. He’s being attacked by shopping trolleys and he sends computers haywire. It’s up to John Watt to find a solution. And hitting him over the head isn’t going to work…

Vernon Bright and the Faster Than Light Show

This third Vernon Bright title centres around the science of light. Vernon, banned from lighting the school play when he blows up the school orchestra, is allowed to video the performance. For Vernon this involves adapting the latest hi tech video recorder but now he finds he can video the future. For Dodgy Dave this is a chance to win the lottery, but all goes wrong as Vernon films the past instead. Then, to Vernon’s horror, he finds a film of his own death! He’s in despair, until he has to take the part of the corpse in the school play and his shouts of joy at being alive ruin another school production.

Friend or Foe

A wild ride through strange galaxies and unexpected adventures. But watch your step and don’t step in anything gross or smelly along the way!The Outernet is a web of intergalactic computer networks linked through Servers on different planets. As the series opens, we discover that the evil Tyrant and his henchmen the FOES are trying to take over the Outernet and use its powers to control the galaxy. Our heroes, including several not so lucky Earth kids, accidentally connect to the Outernet via a lost Server. They must work with the Friends of the Outernet to keep freedom and liberty in the Galaxy. They are assisted and often hindered by a hilarious dog and cat team who are disguised agents of the Friends and the FOES.

Control

The Outernet is under attack. Our heroes several not so clever Earth kids and a meddling dog and cat team have in their possession the last server under Friends Control. The fate of the galaxy is on their shoulders, and it’s time to decide: make the quest to save the world, or sit back and eat cheeseburgers. It s a tough choice, but luckily, the right decision is made. So now Jack, Merle, and Loaf are on a journey through space and strange worlds to restore freedom to the galaxy.

Odyssey

As Jack, Merle, and Load have discovered, there IS life on other planets and lots of it. In fact, they’re planet hopping as they try to keep the Server safe from the FOEs. And they keep meeting all sorts of Alien Life Forces, including creepy spider things on Planet Arachnus. The kids’ mission? To find the ‘genius’ who created the Outernet. But with the bad guys hot on their cosmic trail, the mission gets sidetracked. And now they’re journeying to different galaxies. Galaxies far, far a well…
you get the drift.

Time Out

Jack, Merle, and Loaf have been planet hopping across the galaxy ever since they discovered the Server. It looks like a laptop, but has power beyond any computer system on Earth. And of course, there are a slew of bad guys who want to steal it to capture its power. Jack and his friends are battling to keep the Server safe. But this little machine holds another big surprise. Not only does the Server have the power to teleport people from place to place, it can actually transport our heroes through time. And time travel opens up a whole new galaxy of possibilities…

The Hunt

The Hunt is afoot. Yes, the Tyrant and his evil team of FOE’s have stepped up their search for The Server. They’ve hired a team of hunters to track down Jack, Merle, Loaf, and, most importantly, their little techno prize The Server. And this means trouble for Jack and his friends. While they’re back home on Earth, the ‘Space Invaders’ are closing in. Will they escape in time? It’s going to take some creative thinking and the use of some ancient teleportation devices that happen to exist right here on Earth! A certain mysterious pile of rocks…
known as Stonehenge…

Weaver

Their entire journey has led up to this moment. The final showdown, the last stand, the moment of truth. Janus is sending Jack and his friends on one last mission they must deliver the Server to the evil Tyrant and confront him. Everything will be revealed: the identity of the Weaver, the Tyrant’s master plan, and even the Foe traitor who will bring the Tyrant’s reign to an end…
or so we hope. Jack, Merle, and Loaf’s final Oouternet adventure will shock you. The fate of Googie and Bitz will baffle you. And who ends up with the Server? You won’t know until the very last pages…
.

Goodknyght!

The Dark Forest is a world. Cities, towns and villages exist like islands in a green sea, while in the Forest itself live hermits, wizards and all manner of weird and wonderful creatures some invented, some strangely familiar. The story of Will, swineherd and whipping boy to the ghastly Symon, who constantly reminds him of the awful time he’s going to have when he accompanies Symon to Knyghtschool. Fate lends a hand, when Will instead finds himself on a quest with the mysterious Rune master, to recover the lost treasure of the Dark Forest a quest which is far more dangerous! Comedy fantasy series written for children, with a bit of an edge.

Whizzard!

Cities, towns and villages exist like islands in a green sea, while in the Dark Forest itself live hermits, wizards and all manner of creatures. Tym, apprentice to the local wizard, accidentally invents a new potion that causes them to move at incredible speeds and with interesting side effects!

Trollogy!

The Dark Forest is a world. Cities, towns and villages exist like islands in a green sea, while in the Forest itself live hermits, wizards and all manner of weird and wonderful creatures some invented, some strangely familiar. Trollogy! follows the misadventures of poor old Bertram a troll who’s a complete failure as he can’t tell chalk from granite, but who discovers a talent for cooking. His rock cakes are amazing!

Knyghtmare!

Another exciting, crazy and hilarious adventure set in the arboreal depths of the Dark Forest. A welcome return for some familiar faces caught up in a new adventure. Yet, when they both wake up shaken from an identical dream about a Knyght in black armour on a fire breathing steed they both know that something seriously scary is happening!
