The Gremlins

Published in 1943 and long unavailable, Dark Horse Books is proud to present this landmark book from the author of such beloved tales as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach and Matilda. Digitally restored, this remarkable presentation of Dahl’s classic story, lavishly illustrated by the artists of the Walt Disney Studios, will delight readers of all ages! The Gremlins is the story of Gus, a British World War II fighter pilot, who during the Battle of Britain turned to look out on the wing of his plane only to see an amazing sight: a little man, no more than six inches tall with horns growing from his head, drilling a hole in the plane’s wing. Gus was the first man to ever see a Gremlin, and what happened after that would change the war, and the world, forever. Bought by Walt Disney to be produced as an animated motion picture and considered to be the first story featuring the mythical airplane sabotaging creatures known as Gremlins, the project was ultimately shelved and is reprinted here for the first time in over 60 years.

James and the Giant Peach

Roald Dahl was a champion of the underdog and all things little in this case, an orphaned boy oppressed by two nasty, self centered aunts. How James escapes his miserable life with the horrible aunts and becomes a hero is a Dahlicious fantasy of the highest order. You will never forget resourceful little James and his new family of magically overgrown insects a ladybug, a spider, a grasshopper, a glowworm, a silkworm, and the chronic complainer, a centipede with a hundred gorgeous shoes. Their adventures aboard a luscious peach as large as a house take them across the Atlantic Ocean, through waters infested with peach eating sharks and skies inhabited by malevolent Cloudmen, to a ticker tape parade in New York City. This happily ever after contemporary fairy tale is a twentieth century classic that every child deserves to know. And Lane Smith’s endearingly funny illustrations make this hardcover gift edition the one to cherish and pass from one generation to the next.

The Enormous Crocodile

New design for this favourite unabridged story from the grand master of storytelling. Read by Roald Dahl, himself. The Enormous Crocodile grinned, showing hundreds of sharp white teeth. ‘I’m going to fill my hungry empty tummy with something yummy yummy yummy yummy!’ The Enormous Crocodile boasts that he is going to eat a child for lunch and he sets out to trick all the children in his attempts for food. But his plots and disguises are foiled by the animals in the jungle especially by Trunky, the elephant. A crunchingly golloping tale for age 5 .

The Minpins

Little Billy doesn’t really believe his mother’s stories about all the monsters living in the wood, so he is easily tempted to disobey her and go and see for himself. He doesn’t find any Whangdoodles, Hornswoggles or vermicious Knigs, but the Gruncher who does chase him, billowing orange red smoke, is even more terrifying. Billy finds this horrible Gruncher has been terrorising the other inhabitants of the wood for years The Minpins, a tiny tree dwelling people whose children are the size of matchsticks. But Little Billy doesn’t want to spend the rest of his life up a tree, so he bravely offers to lead the Gruncher away and to his death, thus freeing the grateful Min Pins from his tyranny.

Boy: Tales of Childhood

”I am only eight years old,’ I told myself. ‘No little boy of eight has ever murdered anyone. It’s not possible.”So thought Roald Dahl in 1924 when his plan to get revenge on the mean and disgusting candy store owner Mrs. Pratchett seemed to have worked all too well. Writing about this and other boyhood adventures, the author has recalled only those that stand out as spectacular. ‘Some are funny. Some are painful. Some are unpleasant. I suppose that is why I have always remembered them so vividly. All are true.’We are told of his first automobile ride, in which he nearly lost his nose; of the canings by Headmasters and older schoolboys; and of the grisly methods of Matrons, those guardians against misbehavior who supervised the dormitories. There were glorious times, too, with his big family at home in Wales; on holiday each summer on a remote island in Norway; and in the class of an endearing math teacher who thought numbers the dreariest things in the world. Roald Dahl’s adventures and misadventures during his school years are crowded with people as strange and wonderful as any character he has created and are as exciting and full of the unexpected as his celebrated fiction. Boy is a 1985 Boston Globe Horn Book Awards Honor Book for Nonfiction.

Going Solo

‘They didn’t think for one moment that they would find anything but a burnt out fuselage and a charred skeleton; and they were apparently astounded when they came upon my still breathing body, lying in the sand near by’. In 1938, Roald Dahl was fresh out of school and bound for his first job in Africa, hoping to find adventure far from home. However, he got far more excitement than he bargained for when the outbreak of the Second World War led him to join the RAF. His account of his experiences in Africa, crashing a plane in the Western Desert, rescue and recovery from his horrific injuries in Alexandria, and many other daring deeds, recreates a world as bizarre and unnerving as any he wrote about in his fiction.

Memories with Food at Gipsy House

This book offers an insight into the life of Roald Dahl. It is a mixture of written anecdotes covering Roald Dahl’s upbringing, his youth and early days in Africa and his later life at home with his wife Liccy and their numerous children, grandchildren and friends. The meals they enjoy together round the old pine farmhouse table at Gipsy House are either fine examples of national dishes of their multicolour heritage Norway, France, Britain, or favourite recipes that have delighted three generations of discerning diners. Many recipes have acquired a particular significance for the Dahl family over the years and these are introduced with reminiscences rich in nostalgia and humour. The text by Roald and Liccy Dahl, their children, close family and friends, is interspersed with personal photographs and the sketches of Quentin Blake. The recipes included here are for all occasions, covering family birthday parties, Christmas and Easter celebrations and demonstrating Roald’s passions for chocolate, onions and wine. A final chapter offers recipes for Hangman’s Suppers, with contributions from Francis Bacon, P.D. James, John le Carre and Peter Ustinov among others.

Roald Dahl’s Book of Ghost Stories

Who better to investigate the literary spirit world than that supreme connoisseur of the unexpected, Roald Dahl? Of the many permutations of the macabre or bizarre, Dahl was always especially fascinated by the classic ghost story. As he realtes in the erudite introduction to this volume, he read some 749 supernatural tales at the British Museum Library before selecting the 14 that comprise this anthology. ‘Spookiness is, after all, the real purpose of the ghost story,’ Dahl writes. ‘It should give you the creeps and disturb your thoughts.’ For this superbly disquieting collection, Dahl offers favorite tales by such masterful storytellers as E. F. Benson, J. Sheridan Le Fanu, Rosemary Timperley, and Edith Wharton.
