Ed Gorman Books Overview

Rough Cut

The two stories in this volume were written in 1985 by Ed Gorman, who was in the advertising business at the time and knew his subject well. There’s an introduction by Ed as well as a bibliography of his novels.

Guild

Guild the bounty hunter just wants to collect his latest reward, but a beautiful woman, a man from his past, and a wild lynch mob are going to do all they can to make sure Guild sticks around even if it means his death.

Death Ground

Bounty hunter Leo Guild is on the trail of a wily mountain man wanted for a deadly bank robbery, but he’s not entirely convinced his quarry is the true guilty party.

Blood Game

Leo Guild wanted work riding shotgun on the last stagecoach lines was coming to an end, and he needed money fast. When offered a simple job of finding a missing prizefighter, how could he refuse? Although Guild hates boxing, thinking it nothing more than a Blood Game, jobs were few and far between. So he took it. Guild quickly finds the missing fighter holed up in the home of this girlfriend and finds a lot more trouble than he asks for. Now Guild finds himself taking even a greater dislike of fighters, promoters, and fans of the Blood Game.

The Night Remembers

Here’s what reviewers had to say about Ed Gorman’s 1991 mystery. ‘Subtle, ironic, never flashy The Night Remembers introduces Jack Walsh…
the kind of sleuth forever dogged by somber truths and bitter ironies. He grows on you, and so does Gorman.’ Booklist ‘Gorman’s sixtyish sleuth Jack Walsh, tough as the job demands but as compassionate as the circumstance permits, is a gem and Gorman surrounds him with an ingenious story and a solid supporting cast.’ Robert Wade, San Diego Union ‘Character and a sense of place Cedar Rapids are the strengths of this taut who really dunnit.’ Publisher’s Weekly ‘The Night Remembers is some of the best work Gorman has ever done. Walsh deserves a long life and an extensive literary life.’ Library Bulletin

Blood Moon / Dead Cold

This is the first of the Robert Payne series, written in 1994. Payne is an ex FBI profiler who gets offered $10,000 in an unmarked envelope to find the killer of a young girl. If only it were that easy. A Ramble House book

The Day The Music Died

Buddy Holly’s plane just went down. But for P.I. Sam McCain, bad news hits even closer to home. A local couple turns up dead, and the investigation teaches him that behind the white picket fences of small town Iowa, there’s a flip side to the American dream. ‘An enjoyable start to a new series…
Gorman rocks.’ Publishers Weekly’Hugely entertaining.’ Dean Koontz’Genuinely affecting. Wall Street Journal

Wake Up Little Susie

This is the second Sam McCain book. This series about a young lawyer working for a judge in Black River Falls Iowa in 1958 completely captures the time and place. And a good time and place it was! With his 1951 ragtop Ford with matching skirts and his quick wit the 5 and a half-footish Sam McCain roars through the 50s and early 60s like a rock & roll detective.

Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?

The acclaimed Sam McCain series continues with another case of murder in America’s mid century heartland. In this charming, expertly crafted new mystery set in the twilight of Iowa’s 1950s, fledgling lawyer Sam McCain is dancing to a different tune when he discovers that the beautiful blonde who’s been tracking him in her black Ford convertible is interested in more than his red ragtop. She’s Lila Leigh Mulchaey, and McCain’s in love. Two problems, though, darken McCain’s mood: Lila is pregnant, and Philip Mulchaey, her father an outspoken advocate of left wing causes who’d been fired from his job in the State Department during the McCarthy trials stands at the center of the political storm surrounding the upcoming visit of Nikita Kruschev to Iowa. Then Philip Mulchaey turns up dead. That he was murdered for his politics, everybody, including McCain’s sometime employer, the imperious Judge Esme Anne Whitney, assumes. McCain, however, is not so sure. Murder’s usually more personal in Black River Falls.

Save the Last Dance for Me

As Black River Falls, Iowa, prepares for a presidential election campaign visit from Vice President Richard Milhous Nixon, Reverend John Muldaur is stirring up the town with both his anti Catholic, anti Semitic circulars and his snake handling ceremonies. When Muldaur drops dead on his altar, however, it’s not from a snakebite but from strychnine laced Pepsi. With only a week before her good friend Tricky Dick comes to town, Judge Esme Whitney enlists her friend the struggling lawyer and occasional investigator Sam McCain to prevent the population of Black River Falls from looking like ‘a bunch of hillbillies.’ Once again, McCain must confront local prejudices, secrets, and dim witted police chief Cliffe Sykes, Jr. to solve another small town mystery in the acclaimed series launched with The Day the Music Died. Author Ed Gorman is the winner of many awards, including the Shamus, the Spur, and the International Fiction Writer’s Award. ‘…
. provoke’s a bracing nostalgia for a time that was neither as innocent nor as dull as is sometimes said.’ Wall Street Journal ‘Without overworking those warhorses, nostalgia and kitsch, he sharply evokes the twilight of the ’50s…
.’ Los Angeles Times ‘No writer captures the mood of 50s middle America…
better than Gorman.’ Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine ‘Gorman…
seems to have hit a mother lode with this series.’ Publishers Weekly ‘…
. good and evil clash…
as they have in the more urban crime drama of Block or Leonard.’ Booklist

Everybody’s Somebody’s Fool

It’s Christmastime 1960 in Black River Falls, Iowa, but with an Indian summer keeping the temperature at 75 degrees, it sure doesn t feel like winter. It s so warm, in fact, that the Lucky Star Drive In is still open, and Rick Conroy is still drag racing the nights away with his friends on a deadly stretch of highway outside of town. When Rick slams fatally into a bridge at 90 miles an hour, holiday cheer veers toward foul play, for the police find his brake line to be as lacerated as his spine. The solution does not come easily for struggling lawyer and sometime investigator Sam McCain, who is dragged into the case by the incorrigible Judge Esme Anne Whitney. Leads go nowhere, tensions mount. Add to that his personal problems his father has lung cancer and a recent one night stand is pointing to scandal and it s no wonder the holiday heat wave is making this McCain Christmas the darkest, and most dangerous, of the decade.

Fools Rush In

Death visits the drive in, in this new mystery featuring America’s favorite small town detective. Sam McCain is back, with all ‘the rueful wisdom and charm of an exemplary hero who’ says the San Francisco Chronicle ‘is curious not only about whodunit but also about some of the more elusive riddles of human existence.’ It’s 1963, June. All spring Freedom Riders have been advancing the cause of civil rights in the South. While no one’s marching in Black River Falls, Iowa, except maybe the high school band, the sleepy heartland town is showing signs of racial unease. For the body of a black college student David Leeds has turned up dead. The evidence points to blackmail, and to a scandal that could ruin the already encumbered campaign of the very white Senator Lloyd Williams for reelection, if photos exist to prove rumors that romantically link the senator’s daughter to the handsome, bright, ambitious and black David Leeds. Prejudice runs mean and deep in Sam McCain’s hometown, as the amiable young attorney and sometime detective discovers in an investigation that takes him from the unlit backstreets of Black River Falls to the cliquey precincts of the martini fortified rich.

Ticket to Ride

1965: America’s favorite small town detective must solve the murder of two old friends against the backdrop of America s cultural revolution. For small town Iowa lawyer Sam McCain the year 1965 is not a sweet one. His father is gravely ill. His elitist boss is just now coming out of rehab. The brilliant lawyer he’d hoped to start a relationship with has gone back to her husband in Chicago. And first young soldier from Black River Falls returns home from a strange place called Viet Nam. In a coffin. Against this background McCain tries to enjoy himself during the long Labor Day weekend party the town sponsors every year, reuniting with several old friends who appeared throughout the first six novels. Now that they’re all in their late twenties some of the old grudges and rivalries seem silly until two of them are murdered for what seems to be a motive buried in the past. With the Beatles, Rolling Stones, and Bob Dylan irritating those over thirty and the boys in long hair and girls wearing blouses without bras irritating people even more Sam McCain is forced to realize that his old world, along with the entire country’s, is about to end forever.

The Killing Machine

The first book in the new Noah Ford Western series by Spur Award winner Ed Gorman. A blend of the classic television series The Wild, Wild West and the USA show Peacemakers.

Noah Ford made a serious mistake in the eyes of his family when he joined the Union forces and his Rebel brother David took it the worst of all. And to make matters worse, now that the war was over, Noah had taken up as a federal agent, working for the very government that his southern family fought tooth and nail.

Now a powerful new weapon, a souped up Gatling gun a prototype being developed by the U.S. Army is missing, and all signs point to David Ford, a notorious black market weapons dealer. And even with the bad blood between them, the last thing Noah wants is for his brother to be killed by federal agents, so he volunteers to track him down and return the weapon to its rightful owner, and let his brother live to die another day.

But when Noah attempts to ambush his brother and reclaim the gun, things quickly spiral out of control. Bullets fly and now his partners AND his brother end up dead, and Noah narrowly escapes with a near fatal gunshot wound. It turns out the gun means more to someone else than it did even to his brother, and when new bodies turn up around every corner, Noah must think fast and act even faster if he wants to come back from this assignment alive.

Powder Keg

A new ‘Robin Hood’ is riding the range a hero bank robber who’s handing over the spoils to poor farmers and needy townsfolk. But the bandit’s using powerful explosives in his endeavors and military investigator Noah Ford has to put a stop to the altruistic outlaw’s destructive ways. But Ford’s not investigating alone. Two other federal agents have been assigned to work with him shady government men with their feet planted firmly on the wrong side of the law. Suddenly a volatile situation in the town of Willow Bend is in danger of catching fire with Ford trapped in the middle of the blaze, torn between what’s lawful and what’s right.

Doom Weapon

When hard living, hard drinking federal agent Arnold Grieves came to Junction City, he saw a town overflowing with vice the kind of place where an unscrupulous lawman could feed his twisted hungers and make a serious killing. Now the old Grieves is gone and the new one’s hell bent on getting rich…
by selling a doomsday weapon to evil men who are not reluctant to use it. The powers back East suspect something so they’re sending their very best manhunter, Noah Ford, to Colorado to hunt Grieves down. Ford doesn’t know it yet, but he’s riding into a town that’s fixing to explode with chaos, treachery, and unimaginable violence. And the rogue he’s chasing’s not about to surrender quietly and neither one of them will be dying alone.

Prodigal Son (By:Dean Koontz,Kevin J. Anderson)

In the nineteenth century, Dr. Victor Frankenstein brought his notorious creation to life, but a horrible turn of events forced him to abandon it and slip away from the public eye. Two centuries later, a serial killer is on the loose in New Orleans, gruesomely salvaging body parts from each of his victims, as if trying to assemble a perfect human being. Detective Carson O Connor is cool, cynical, and every bit as tough as she looks. Her partner, Michael Maddison, would back her up all the way to Hell itself and that just may be where their new case leads. For as they investigate the strange killings, O Connor and Madison find themselves drawn into a weird underworld of deception and secrets where a man named Victor Helios has created an entire race of perfectly engineered people who are meant to take humankind’s place one day. But something is happening to some of Helios s creations, and it may be that this bizarre serial killer is the least of the detectives worries. In Lost Souls, Koontz puts a singular twist on this classic tale of ambition and science gone wrong and forges a new legend uniquely suited to our times a story of revenge, redemption, and the razor thin line that separates humanity from inhumanity as we consider a new invitation to apocalypse. An American Education

In 1935, the depth of the depression, Edward Gorman, a freshly minted Baltimore public high school graduate, unable to afford college and unwilling to settle for a dead end $11 per week warehouse job without first glimpsing at least some of the world, discovered that the army would send him to Hawaii, an exotic paradise few had any hope of ever visiting. The Old Army pre World War II quickly introduced an innocent boy to life’s harsh realities and began an education of quite a different kind than an 18 year old can expect today. That first step determined the haphazard course of a full and interesting life determined largely by pure happenstance, each phase linked to the next by an unforeseen circumstance or chance meeting. Such ‘linkages,’ as he calls them, can be recognized only by hindsight, and are a theme running through this unusual book. Although we are told of certain unique occurrences in both the battle of Leyte the retaking of the Philippines from the Japanese and the battle of Okinawa, the last and bloodiest of World War II, this is not a war book. It is a very personal life story written in an easy style that captures the author’s personality. At the same time it tells us things about America that we did not know. His American education was topped by a Masters Degree from Oxford at age 70.

The End of it All

This is a collection of 23 short stories of suspense and terror.

Famous Blue Raincoat

‘Gorman is great;possibly one of THE greats,’ writes the British mystery journal Shots about Ed Gorman’s short stories. ‘If George Orwell had written thrillers,’ Shots continues, ‘he might have written them this way; never a word too many, never a word too few, never a word that doesn’t come from the heart.’

Ed Gorman’s mystery short stories have a flavor found nowhere else among contemporary writers. His tales have an amazing breadth of style and plot-classical detection, private eye stories, biter-bit tales in which criminous schemes turn back on the perpetrator, and straight crime stories.

What they all have in common is a recognition that we cannot escape our past. The Judge Whitney-Cody McCain stories are filled with the sights and sounds of small-town America around 1958. ‘The Closing Circle’ is both a detective story and a sensitive evocation of a girl coming of age. ‘The Cage’ and ‘Favor and the Princess’ are not only pure detection but also about understanding your first love years later.

You may like some of the protagonists, such as private eye Jack Dwyer in ‘Eye of the Beholder,’ and despise others, including the narrator in ‘Our Kind of Guy,’ but all of Ed Gorman’s stories are filled with the truth of human experience.

Different Kinds of Dead and Other Tales

Gorman touches on futuristic fiction, as ‘Loverboy’ offers a peak into a marriage strained by a husband s addiction to cyber sex parlors and holographic women. His protagonists, gritty and gruff, are strangely likeable, and his writing, according to Mystery News, is powerful, disturbing, and often poetic.’ This recording features the dramatic voices of Rex Linn, Gabrielle de Cuir, Moira Quirk, Stefan Rudnicki and Stephen Hoye. Prepare for an emotional and psychological thrill ride for which only the talents of writer Ed Gorman can be responsible.

They’re Here… Invasion of the Body Snatchers (With: Kevin McCarthy)

Invasion of the Body Snatchers is one of the most ingenious and influential works of science fiction ever to ‘take over’ the public imagination. Based on the 1955 novel The Body Snatchers by Jack Finney author of the classic Time and Again, this classic tale of alienation, conformity, and political paranoia has inspired three motion pictures and terrified three generations of fans. Now this fascinating companion volume edited by Kevin McCarthy, the star of the original film, and Ed Gorman explores the enduring power and popularity of The Body Snatchers phenomenon. Filled with photographs, interviews, personal commentaries, and behind the scenes anecdotes it is, at once, a tribute to director Don Siegel’s 1956 film noir classic of Red Scare paranoia, a reas*sessment of the 1978 and 1997 remakes, and an homage to the brilliant fiction of author Jack Finney.

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (With: Kevin McCarthy)

Invasion of the Body Snatchers starring Kevin McCarthy and Dana Wynter is one of the most revered films in international film history. For many critics it began the serious cycle of science fictions films that now include ‘Alien’ and ‘Blade Runner.’ Thanks to the novel by Jack Finney, the screenplay by Daniel Mainwaring and especially the direction of Don Siegel, ‘Invasion’ runs on television somewhere virtually every day. This original book brings together interviews with Kevin McCarthy and Dana Wynter and also includes pieces by Dean Koontz introduction, Stephen King an essay; and interviews with Philip Kaufman, who directed the 1978 remake; Robert H. Solo, who produced the remake; W. D. Richter, who wrote the remake; and Abel Ferrara, who directed the 1997 remake. Packed with insights into the production of a classic film, filled with moments of humor and a few moments of angst, and as entertaining as a ‘behind the scenes’ look at the movie business this is a tribute to Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

Murder Most Feline (With: Martin H. Greenberg)

When law meets paw…
The result is this delightful anthology of seventeen courtroom tales by top notch mystery writers. Cats and mysteries go hand in hand, no doubt. After all, what other animal is as mysterious as the common yet never ordinary house cat? What lurks behind that smug expression? What hidden secrets belie that indifferent stare? Always dignified, cats are quick to deal out their own justice with a claw or bite, and so it is only natural we find them in a variety of roles in these feline mysteries. Cats take the stand in their own defense to pounce on criminals, provide evidence, and turn the legal system on its collective ear all in the name of justice. From a private eye who goes to bat for a cat’s inheritance to a common mouser who turns out to be quite a bit more during a high profile murder trial, these tales of crimes are as crafty and cunning as kitties themselves and just as entertaining! The Blue and the Gray Undercover

Battles were won with bullets and sabers on the battlefields of the War Between the States, for sure. But often, the outcome of those battles was affected by the heroic acts of spies both Union and Confederate. Such heroes, unsung while they did their vital work, included those whose true stories are told in the pages of this book: Elizabeth Van Lew: Her Richmond, Virginia, neighbors thought her eccentric or crazy but her odd behavior covered her activities as a spy for the Union army. Belle Boyd: A daring Confederate spy whose charm and beauty were exceeded only by her boldness and resourcefulness in eluding Union’s efforts to capture her. Serena Freneau: A beautiful spy who seduced secrets from Union officers even marrying one of them! Timothy Webster: A Union spy who dared to infiltrate the South’s infamous ‘Knights of Liberty’ as a double agent. Their exploits, and the other tales in this extraordinary volume, are as thrilling as any spy stories from the past or present and many of them are true history. The Blue and the Gray UndercoverNo war is won on the battlefield alone, and the Civil War was no exception. Behind the lines, behind closed doors, in disguise, spies for both the Union and the Confederacy did what spies have always done: seek out information that will help their side get some advantage over the enemy. In the pages of this unique volume some of the most gifted storytellers of our generation write about many different spies. Editor Ed Gorman has brought together never before published tales of undercover work during the War Between the States by such bestselling authors as Doug Allyn, John Lutz, Brendan DuBois, Loren D. Estleman, and by other talented writers, including Janet Berliner, James H. Cobb, Bill Crider, Jane Haddam, Edward D. Hoch, Marie Jakober, Jane Lindskold, P. G. Nagle, Gary Phillips, Robert J. Randisi, Kristine Kathryn Rusch, Aileen Schumacher, and Ray Vukcevich. In cities and in the wild, north and south of the Mason Dixon line, in the Atlantic Ocean, the Caribbean Sea even in Canada these stories capture the tension and excitement of the high stakes risks numberless people took to help their side in the terrible war that sundered a nation. Not all the stories are based on fact, but all show people doing the kinds of things that were actually done to win the war with brains instead of bullets. The result is a fascinating look at a little known part of our Civil War heritage.
