Neal Shusterman Books Overview

The Schwa Was Here

They say his clothes blend into the background, no matter where he stands. They say a lot of things about the Schwa, but one thing’s for sure: no one ever noticed him. Except me. My name is Antsy Bonano and I was the one who realized the Schwa was ‘functionally invisible’ and used him to make some big bucks. But I was also the one who caused him more grief than a friend should. So if you all just shut up and listen, I ll tell you everything there is to know about the Schwa, from how he got his name, to what really happened with his mom. I ll spill everything. Unless, of course, ‘the Schwa Effect’ wipes him out of my brain before I m done…
.

Antsy Does Time

It was a dumb idea, but one of those dumb ideas that accidentally turns out to be brilliant which, I ve come to realize, is much worse than being dumb. My name’s Antsy Bonano but you probably already know that and unless you got, like, memory issues, you ll remember the kid named the Schwa, who I told you about last time. Well, now there s this other kid, and his story is a whole lot stranger. It all started when Gunnar mlaut and I were watching three airborne bozos struggle with a runaway parade balloon. That s when Gunnar tells me he s only got six months to live. Maybe it was because he said he was living on borrowed time, or maybe it was just because I wanted to do something meaningful for him, but I gave him a month of my life…

And that s when things began to get seriously weird.

Dread Locks

Dread Locks is the first entry in the Dark Fusion series from master storyteller Neal Shusterman. He cleverly weaves together familiar parts of fairy tales and Greek mythology to tell the story of fourteen year old Parker Bear, rich and utterly bored with life until a new girl arrives in town. Tara’s eyes are always hidden behind designer sunglas*ses, and her hair, blond with glimmering spirals, seems almost alive. Parker watches, fascinated, as one by one Tara chooses high school students to befriend; he even helps her by making the necessary introductions. Over time, her ‘friends’ develop strange quirks, such as drinking gallons of milk, eating dirt, and becoming lethargic. By the time Parker realizes what Tara is doing, he is too embroiled to stop her. In fact, she has endowed him with certain cravings of his own…
. To say more would spoil the spooky fun of this wild thriller let the twist speak for itself and leave you still as a statue.

Red Rider’s Hood

Red rides around his tough urban neighborhood in his blood red Mustang. It satisfies his urge to wander, and it usually keeps him safe from the gangs in town, the Wolves and the Crypts. But when Red’s grandmother is mugged by some members of the Wolves, Red can no long sit on the sidelines. He decides to join the Wolves as a pledge so he can learn how to defeat them. Soon he uncovers their terrible secret: they are werewolves with a thirst for human blood. Instead of feeling horrified, Red envies the Wolves freedom and power. Even as he trains to kill them under an unlikely but cunning werewolf hunter he has come to see them as packmates. Finally he is faced with a choice at the next full moon: take up the Wolves murderous ways, or take them down.

Duckling Ugly

Cara is so ugly, mirrors would rather break than show her reflection. Not even her own parents can deny her ugliness, and nothing can make up for the cruelty of her schoolmates. Tormented and tortured by the shallow people of Flock’s Rest, Cara s life is miserable. Then Cara receives a shimmering note from some exotic place suggesting that there s more to her than meets the eye. Cara wonders if her destiny has something to do with her recurring dreams of a beautiful green valley where the people are so accepting, her ugliness doesn t matter. Soon, Cara discovers that her valley of dreams is real. It s a place where the ugliest of ducklings can become swans. A swan, however, can have a serious taste for revenge…
deadly revenge.

Darkness Creeping

Imagine being trapped forever in someone else’s nightmare, with no means of escape. Or caught on one of the most terrifying roller coasters of all time, when suddenly the tracks ahead just disappear. Enter the world of Darkness Creeping, where hollow eyed skulls arrive in the mail and nothing is as it seems. Boston Globe Horn Book Award winner and beloved author Neal Shusterman walks on the dark side with this classic collection of masterfully creepy stories so horrifying, you may have to read them twice to remind yourself they re not real.

Mindquakes

From award winner Neal Shusterman author of The Dark Side of Nowhere and Scorpion Shards comes a spectacular collection of stories that are by turns terrifying, comic, darkly inventive, thought provoking, and always just slightly off center.

Mindstorms

A teenager and his mother embark on a whirlwind pleasure cruise, hoping to escape from their problems and searching for a little rest and relaxation. So they book passage on a no frills excursion to the exotic Far East. Sounds like fun, huh? Too bad pleasure isn’t on the ship’s itinerary!Darren hears voices…
in his head. Everyone thinks he’s crazy. Even Darren begins to doubt his own sanity when a mysterious stranger pays him a late night visit. Who is he? A time traveler, it turns out. A time traveler from 350 million years ago!A boy on his way back from a family holiday is annoyed when he picks up the wrong luggage at the airport. Well, he might as well try the clothes on for size, right? It’s a perfect fit. Except for that weird third sleeve…
. Like a spidery fracture in an otherwise unblemished pane of glass, there exists in the mind a place where reality is warped to expose a world of distortions. Each of these stories is an unforgettable glimpse into that mysterious world a place called Mindstorms.

Mindbenders

Ever have the feeling your head isn’t screwed on right? That things just seem a bit…
weird? Welcome to Mindbenders. Not a place, but a state of mind. Think reality…
with a twist. How twisted? Let’s just say your brain will turn into a pretzel. By turns terrifying, hysterical, thought provoking, bizarre, each story in this dazzling collection is a wild, high octane, heart thumping journey into the unknown.

The Shadow Club

The Shadow Club starts simply enough: the kids who are tired of being second-best get together and, for the first time, talk about how they feel. But soon the members decide to play practical jokes on the first-place winners they envy, and things begin to spin dangerously out of control.

‘This is a provocative novel…
The plot is ingeniously simple and the course of events compelling. Brisk enough to snag a popular audience, but forceful in impact, it will leave readers thinking.’ Booklist, starred review

The Shadow Club Rising

The Shadow Club doesn’t exist anymore. The group of second best kids used to play anonymous practical jokes on their rivals, until things spiraled out of control. Now Jared and the ex Shadow Club members are having a hard time shaking their reputation. And when the new golden boy at school is the victim of a series of nasty pranks, everyone’s convinced Jared is to blame. Determined to prove his innocence, Jared soon becomes wrapped up in a nightmare worse than anything the Shadow Club ever caused.

Everlost

Nick and Allie don t survive the car accident but their souls don t exactly get where they re supposed to go either. Instead, they re caught halfway between life and death, in a sort of limbo known as Everlost: a shadow of the living world, filled with all the things and places that no longer exist. It’s a magical, yet dangerous place where bands of lost children run wild and anyone who stands in the same place too long sinks to the center of the Earth.

When they find Mary, the self proclaimed queen of lost kids, Nick feels like he s found a home, but Allie isn t satisfied spending eternity between worlds. Against all warnings, Allie begins learning the Criminal Art of haunting, and ventures into dangerous territory, where a monster called the McGill threatens all the souls of Everlost.

In this imaginative novel, Neal Shusterman explores questions of life, death, and what just might lie in between.

Everwild

Everlost, the limbo land of dead children, is at war. Nick the Chocolate Ogre wants to help the children of Everlost reach the light at the end of the tunnel. Mary Hightower, self proclaimed queen of lost children and dangerous fanatic, is determined to keep Everlost’s children trapped within its limbo for all eternity. Traveling in the memory of the Hindenburg, Mary is spreading her propaganda and attracting Afterlights to her cause at a frightening speed. Meanwhile, Allie the Outcast travels home to seek out her parents, along with Mikey, who was once the terrifying monster the McGill. Allie is tempted by the seductive thrill of skinjacking the living, until she discovers the shocking truth about skinjackers. Critically acclaimed author Neal Shusterman writes a book about life, death, and how the choices we make define ourselves in this luminous sequel to Everlost, which Orson Scott Card called marvelously inventive…
and magically beautiful.

Everfound

As Mary Hightower slumbers in a glass coffin waiting to be reborn back into Everlost, her allies and henchmen begin to carry out her terrible mission. Mary’s army is joined by a newcomer: Jix, a spy for the Mayan King of Everlost. A furjacker who skinjacks great cats, Jix has his own agenda. Meanwhile, Mikey McGill desperately tries to rescue Allie the Outcast. At his side is Nick the ‘Chocolate Ogre,’ who has become pure chocolate and hardly remembers himself at all. Mikey encounters a creature that scares even the mighty McGill: a scar wraith, whose touch can extinguish an Afterlight forever. It becomes clear that the outcome will determine not just the fate of Everlost, but the fate of the living world as well. Critically acclaimed author Neal Shusterman brings to a close the trilogy that Kirkus Reviews called ‘beautiful and imaginative’ with this stunning final volume.

Scorpion Shards

Thief of Souls

For five young people born with extraordinary powers, a climactic battle against Evil seemingly brought an end to their nightmare. But as they will discover, the nightmare has only begun. Imprisoned for thousands of years, an ancient, malevolent force The Bringer awaits the moment when it can break free and wreak its revenge upon the world. Only one force can stop it: the power of the five.

Shattered Sky

It began innocently enough: six children conceived at the exact moment that the star Mentaras H went supernova. The explosion transformed their souls into living star fragments. It also conferred upon each of them a unique but mysterious power a power that until they learned its secret masqueraded as a warping disfigurement. For some, it was physical. For others, it was emotional. But for ALL six it meant one thing: their lives would never be the same. In time they unlocked the secret of their power. Their gifts brought them incredible riches and attention. Once despised for their deformities, they would come to be worshiped and feared as gods. But with unlimited power would come the temptation to abuse it and in a desperate struggle for supremacy the risk of turning against one another like hungry wolves. But only now will the true cost of their gifts be revealed. A new and terrifying force has been loosed in the universe. It infects an alien planet like a rampaging virus. When the inhabitants of the doomed planet are forced to flee, they must conquer and colonize a new planet. Their choice: Earth. Only one power exists that could conceivably prevent the extermination of the human race: the Star Shards. But only if the six put aside their titanic egos and join forces. Welcome to Judgment Day.

Unwind

In America after the Second Civil War, the Pro Choice and Pro Life armies came to an agreement: The Bill of Life states that human life may not be touched from the moment of conception until a child reaches the age of thirteen. Between the ages of thirteen and eighteen, however, a parent may choose to retroactively get rid of a child through a process called ‘Unwinding.’ Unwinding ensures that the child’s life doesn t technically end by transplanting all the organs in the child’s body to various recipients. Now a common and accepted practice in society, troublesome or unwanted teens are able to easily be unwound. With breath taking suspense, this book follows three teens who all become runaway Unwinds: Connor, a rebel whose parents have ordered his Unwinding; Risa, a ward of the state who is to be unwound due to cost cutting; and Lev, his parents’ tenth child whose Unwinding has been planned since birth as a religious tithing. As their paths intersect and lives hang in the balance, Shusterman examines serious moral issues in a way that will keep readers turning the pages to see if Connor, Risa, and Lev avoid meeting their untimely ends.
