The Mystery of the Burnt Cottage

The cottage in Mr Hick’s garden mysteriously burns down one night, and five children think someone started the fire deliberately. Mr Goon, the local policeman, thinks so too, and isn’t at all pleased to have the Five Find Outers and Dog nosing in on his mystery. There seem to be lots of suspects Mr Peeks, Mr Hick’s valet, has just been rudely dismissed, Mr Smellie argued with Mr Hick the day of the fire, there’s a suspicious looking tramp in the fields nearby, and even Mr Hick’s housekeeper has a reason to have done it. The children bump into Inspector Jenks fishing by the river one day, and talk to him about their theories. Inspector Jenks is senior to Mr Goon, who still doesn’t want to listen to the children, and praises the Find Outers as they reveal the true culprit Mr Hick himself, who burnt the cottage for the insurance money.

The Mystery of the Disappearing Cat

Lady Candling lives next door to Pip and Bets, and owns some very expensive, pedigree Siamese cats. When her most famous cat, Dark Queen, goes missing, the gardener’s help, Luke seems the obvious suspect. Mr Goon and Mr Tupping, Lady Candling’s gardener are sure he’s the culprit, as he was digging by the cat house all alone when Dark Queen disappeared. The Five Find Outers must solve the mystery to clear the name of their friend Luke. Strangely, Dark Queen soon reappears, dirty and tired, but unhurt. And stranger still, she disappears again a few days later, once more when only Luke could have done it. Piecing together clues of pale paint, turps and some wellington boots, the Five Find Outers prove, once more with the help of Inspector Jenks, not only that Luke is innocent, but that Mr Tupping took Dark Queen and deliberately tried to frame Luke for the crime.

The Mystery of the Secret Room

In the cold and foggy Christmas holidays, it doesn’t seem as though the Five Find Outers and Dog will have anything exciting to investigate. Fatty’s got some wonderful new disguises, but there doesn’t seem to be any mystery for them at all this time. Then Pip stumbles on a single furnished room in an otherwise deserted house. They try to find out whom the house belongs to, but they’re not making much progress until Fatty decides to go to the house to see what he can uncover. Suddenly trapped by the men inside, he writes a note to his friends, apparently innocuous enough, but with another secret message hidden beneath it. Mr Goon has tried investigating the house too, but only ends up locked in the coal cellar and covered in dust. The rest of the Find Outers call Inspector Jenks to help Fatty, and find the house has been a place for storing stolen goods and the men inside are wanted criminals. Another mystery safely solved!

The Mystery of the Spiteful Letters

Pip and Bets’ housemaid receives a spiteful letter in the post. Then Mrs Moon receives one too. Who would want to make them so miserable? By piecing together the clues, the Find Outers are determined to find the culprit.
