Someday a Blessing
Sophie Susana Stanski was born April 2, 1925, in Poznan, Poland. Sophie and her family endured the dictatorship under Hitler’s armed forces, as well as Sophie’s kidnapping by the Germans. Sophie spent five long years in slavery under the rule of a German family. She was rescued and liberated by the American allied forces in 1949, only to find her family behind the Iron Curtain. Too frightened to return to her homeland, Sophie obtained work at an American base in Simershausen, Germany. There, she met and fell in love with an American soldier who brought her to the United States, and then left her devastated and frightened in a new country with four children to raise alone. Sophie found herself sinking into a deep depression as she tried to maintain caring for her children, but losing at love and having to break her promises to her family back in Poland were almost more than she could bear. She tried to lean on God, but her depression and seclusion only kept her from letting in the only people who truly loved her: her family and friends. This is her story, of war, love, hope, and Someday a Blessing.
