Clive Cussler Books Overview

The Mediterranean Caper / Mayday!

Just seventy two hours ago, Dirk Pitt was lying in the hot California sun with a beautiful woman, a Scotch rocks in one hand, but an urgent call from Admiral James Sandecker, his commander at the National Underwater and Marine Agency NUMA, brings Pitt out of the warm Pacific breezes and straight into a North Atlantic deep freeze. The reason: the dis covery of a long missing luxury yacht, en route to a secret White House rendezvous, frozen solid in a mil lion ton tombstone of ice. Tunneling his way into the core of the berg, Pitt comes upon a gruesome scene a crew of corpses, hor ribly incinerated at their posts but the vessel’s price less cargo, which could alter the balance of world power and put the threat of annihilation at America’s doorstep, has vanished. This discovery is the springboard from which Clive Cussler The Grand Master of Adventure launches a compelling and powerful story that takes Dirk Pitt from the remote, uninhabited tundra of Iceland to the frigid abyss of the North Atlantic, determined to force his deadly, unseen opponent a multibillionaire in the business of playing God to make his next move. But first Pitt will have to penetrate the shroud of mystery concealing a titanic network of international financial intrigue and mass murder. Lives, nations, continents are at stake. And although his enemies may have the firepower as always, Dirk Pitt has the skill and the daring, the ruth lessness and resourcefulness to meet it. He also has Kirsti Fyrie, an Icelandic beauty whose twin brother died on the ice encased yacht and who carries in her heart the secret that Pitt needs to destroy his opponents in this deadly game. Iceberg is classic Cussler.

Flood Tide

Following the runaway success of his first nonfiction book, The Sea Hunters, Clive Cussler returns with his legendary fictional hero Dirk Pitt in a masterfully crafted tale of villainy on the high seas and the Mississippi River that can only enhance his status as the grand master of adventure fiction. The coin of the realm for the wealthy, insatiably greedy Chinese smuggler who is Dirk Pitt’s adversary in Flood Tide is human lives: much of his vast fortune has been made smuggling Chinese immigrants into countries around the globe, including the United States. Tracking the smuggler’s nefarious activities leads Pitt from Washington State to Louisiana, where his quarry is mysteriously constructing a huge shipping port in the middle of nowhere. Why has he chosen this unlikely location? The trail then leads to the race to find the site of the mysterious sinking of the ship that Chiang Kai shek filled with treasure when he fled China in 1949, including the legendary boxes containing the bones of Peking Man that had vanished at the beginning of World War I. As Pitt prepares for a final dramatic showdown, he is faced with the most formidable foe he has ever encountered. With a dozen consecutive New York Times bestsellers and over 70 million copies of his books in print, Clive Cussler is one of America’s most popular novelists. His latest book is enthralling, intricately plotted, and supremely suspenseful.

Atlantis Found

Long hailed as the grand master of adventure fiction, Clive Cussler has continued to astound with the intricate plotting and astonishing set pieces of his novels. Now, with a surprising twist, he gives us his most audacious work yet. In the final pages of Valhalla Rising, Dirk Pitt discovered, to his shock, that he had two grown children he had never known twenty three year old fraternal twins born to a woman he thought had died in an underwater earthquake. Both have inherited his love of the sea: the girl, Summer, is a marine biologist; the boy, himself named Dirk, is a marine engineer. And now they are about to help their father in the adventure of a lifetime. There is a brown tide infesting the ocean off the shore of Nicaragua. The twins are working in a NUMAr underwater enclosure, trying to determine its origin, when two startling things happen: Summer discovers an artifact, something strange and beautiful and ancient; and the worst storm in years boils up out of the sky, heading straight not only for them but also for a luxurious floating resort hotel square in its path. The peril for everybody concerned is incalculable, and, desperately, Pitt, Al Giordino, and the rest of the NUMAr crew rush to the rescue, but what they find in the storm’s wake makes the furies of nature pale in comparison. For there is an all too human evil at work in that part of the world, and the brown tide is only a by product of its plan. Soon, its work will be complete and the world will be a very different place. Though if Summer’s discovery is to be believed, the world is already a very different place…
Filled with breathtaking action and suspense, Trojan Odyssey is Cussler at the height of his storytelling powers.

Black Wind (With: Dirk Cussler)

Black Wind continued Dirk Pitt’s meteoric career with one of Clive Cussler’s most audacious, and well received, novels yet: ‘Black Wind more than maintains the supercharged Cusslerian danger’ Kirkus Reviews. ‘Thriller fans will revel in this action packed yarn’ Publishers Weekly. But now Cussler takes an extraordinary leap, with one of his most remarkable villains ever. Genghis Khan the greatest conqueror of all time, who, at his peak, ruled an empire that stretched from the Pacific Ocean to the Caspian Sea. His conquests are the stuff of legend, his tomb a forgotten mystery. Until now. When Dirk Pitt is nearly killed rescuing an oil survey team from a freak wave on Russia’s Lake Baikal, it appears a simple act of nature. When the survey team is abducted and Pitt’s research vessel nearly sunk, however, it’s obvious there’s something more sinister involved. All trails lead to Mongolia, and a mysterious mogul who is conducting covert deals for supplying oil to the Chinese while wreaking havoc on global oil markets utilizing a secret technology. The Mongolian harbors a dream of restoring the conquests of his ancestors, and holds a dark secret about Genghis Khan that just might give him the wealth and power to make that dream come true. From the frigid lakes of Siberia to the hot sands of the Gobi Desert, Dirk Pitt and Al Giordino find intrigue, adventure, and peril while collecting clues to the mysterious treasure of Xanadu. But first, they must keep the tycoon from murder and the unleashing of a natural disaster of calamitous proportions. Filled with breathtaking suspense and brilliant imagination, his new novel is yet further proof that when it comes to adventure writing, nobody beats Clive Cussler.

But no one survived from that doomed mission, captain and crew perished to a man and if Pitt and his colleague Al Giordino aren t careful, the very same fate may await them. Filled with the breathtaking suspense and audacious imagination that have become his hallmarks, this is a tour de force further proof that when it comes to adventure writing, nobody beats Clive Cussler.

Serpent (With: Paul Kemprecos)

INTRODUCING KURT AUSTINFrom the classic novel Raise the Titanic! to his latest blockbuster Flood Tide, Clive Cussler and his fictional alter ego Dirk Pitt have earned legions of fans worldwide. Now, the author of fifteen consecutive bestsellers unleashes a hero for the next millennium in an electrifying new series of unrelenting action and edge of your seat thrills. On the bottom of the icy sea off Nantucket lies the battered remains of the Italian luxury liner, Andrea Doria. But few know that within its bowels rests a priceless pre Columbian antiquity a treasure that now holds the key to a puzzle that is costing people their lives. For Kurt Austin, the leader of a courageous National Underwater Marine Agency NUMA exploration team, the killing begins when he makes a daring rescue of a beautiful marine archaeologist. The target of a powerful Texas industrialist named Halcon, Nina Kirov was attacked off the coast of Morocco after her discovery of a carved stone head that may prove Christopher Columbus was not the first European to discover America. Soon Kurt and Nina embark on a deadly mission to uncover Halcon’s masterful plan an insidious scheme that would have him carve out a new nation from the southwest United States and Mexico, and ride to power on a wave of death and destruction. With Austin’s elite NUMA crew attacking the murderous conspiracy from different sides, an extraordinary truth emerges: that Columbus may have made a fifth, unknown voyage to America in search of a magnificent treasure. And that the silent, steel hull of the Andrea Doria not only holds the answer to what the explorer may have found but the fate of the United States itself.

jolt of energy’ ‘The Denver Post.’ Now Austin and his crew slake their thirst for action as they attempt to drown an eco extortionist’s plan to control the world’s freshwater supply. BLUE GOLDA Novel from the NUMA FilesFrom deep within the Venezuelan rain forest emanates the legend of a white goddess and a mysterious tribe with startling technical accomplishments. Few believe the tribe exists and even fewer suspect its deity may hold knowledge that can change the course of history. For National Underwater & Marine Agency crew leader Kurt Austin, an investigation into the sudden deaths of rare whales leads him to the Mexican coast, where someone tries to put him and his mini sub permanently out of commission. Meanwhile, in South America’s lush hills, a specially assigned NUMA crew turns up the white goddess legend and a murderous cadre of bio pirates intent on stealing medicinal secrets worth millions. Soon Austin and his crew realize they’re working the opposite ends of the same grand scheme. A billionaire California tycoon is poised to rise to power by monopolizing the earth’s vastly depleted freshwater reserves and ultimately dominate the world. Austin has a hunch Venezuela’s mythical tribal goddess has some real roots in science, and may be the key to locating a secret formula that could turn vast amounts of seawater into fresh. But with each step into the bush, he and his NUMA team feel like fish out of water and must fight a deadly, twisting trail of enemies through a dense jungle of treachery, blackmail, and murder.

Fire Ice (With: Paul Kemprecos)

In Serpent, Clive Cussler introduced a hero for the new millennium in Kurt Austin, the leader of NUMA’s Special Assignments Team. In previous encounters, Austin and his colleague Joe Zavala have battled eco extortionists and mad empire builders but they have never faced a menace like the one before them now. In the heart of the old Soviet Union, a mining tycoon has proclaimed himself czar of Russia. Claiming Romanov ancestry and backed by billions of dollars, he is determined to overthrow the already shaky Russian government and U.S. opposition doesn’t bother him one bit. A little crisis of their own should distract the Americans for a while, and he knows just the thing…
. Filled with all the hair raising action and endless imagination that are Cussler’s hallmarks, Fire Ice is a dazzling thriller from the grandmaster of adventure fiction.

Polar Shift (With: Paul Kemprecos)

Polar shift: It is the name for a phenomenon that may have occurred many times in the past. At the very least, it disorients birds and animals and damages electrical equipment. At its worst, it causes massive eruptions, earthquakes, and climatic changes. At its very worst, it would mean the obliteration of all living matter, and if that happens exit Earth. Sixty years ago, an eccentric Hungarian genius discovered how to artificially trigger such a shift, but then his work was lost, or so it was thought. Now, the charismatic leader of an anti globalization group plans to use the work to give the world’s industrialized nations a small jolt, then reverse the shift back again. The only problem is, it cannot be reversed. Once the shift starts, there is nothing anyone can do about it. Austin, Zavala, and the rest of the NUMA Special Assignments Team certainly have faced dire situations before, but never have they encountered anything like this. This time…
even they may be too late.

The Navigator (With: Paul Kemprecos)

Their first victim is a crooked antiquities dealer, murdered in cold blood. Their second very nearly is a UN investigator who, were it not for the timely assistance of Austin and Zavala, would now be at the bottom of a watery grave.

What’s so special about this statue? Austin wonders. The search for answers will take the NUMA team on an astonishing odyssey through time and space, one that encompasses no less than the lost treasures of King Solomon, a mysterious packet of documents personally encoded by Thomas Jefferson, and a top secret scientific project that could change the world forever.

And that’s before the surprises really begin…

Rich with all the hair raising action and endless invention that have become Cussler’s hallmarks, The Navigator is Clive’s best yet.

There are the pirates who fought off the Barbary Coast in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, the contemporary pirates who infest the waters of Africa and Asia, and the pirates…
who look like something else. When the U.S. secretary of state’s plane crashes while bringing her to a summit meeting in Libya, the CIA, distrusting the Libyans, hire Juan Cabrillo to search for her, and their misgivings are well founded. The crew locates the plane, but the secretary of state has vanished. It turns out Libya s new foreign minister has other plans for the conference, plans that Cabrillo cannot let happen. But what does it all have to do with a two hundred year old naval battle and the centuries old Islamic scrolls that the Libyans seem so determined to find? The answers will lead him full circle into history, and into another pitched battle on the sea, this time against Islamic terrorists, and with the fate of nations resting on its outcome. Readers will burn up the pages following the blazing action and daring exploits of these men and women and their amazing machines, writes Publishers Weekly of the Oregon Files series. And they ll do it once again, with Corsair.

The Chase

For decades, Clive Cussler has been delighting readers with novels filled with suspense, action, and sheer audacity. Now he does it again, in one of the wildest, most entertaining historical thrillers in years.

April 1950: The rusting hulk of a steam locomotive rises from the deep waters of a Montana lake. Inside is all that remains of three men who died forty four years before. But it is not the engine or its grisly contents that interest the people watching nearby. It is what is about to come next…

1906: For two years, the western states of America have been suffering an extraordinary crime spree: a string of bank robberies by a single man who cold bloodedly murders any and all witnesses and then vanishes without a trace. Fed up by the depredations of the ‘Butcher Bandit,’ the U.S. government brings in the best man they can find a tall, lean, no nonsense detective named Isaac Bell, who has caught thieves and killers coast to coast.

But Bell has never had a challenge like this one. From Arizona to Colorado to the streets of San Francisco during its calamitous earthquake and fire, he pursues what is quickly becoming clear to him is the sharpest criminal mind he has ever encountered, and the woman who seems to hold the key to the bandit’s identity. Using science, deduction, and intuition, Bell repeatedly draws near only to grasp at thin air, but at least he knows his pursuit is having an effect. Because his quarry is getting angry now, and has turned The Chase back on him. The hunter has become the hunted. And soon it will take all of Isaac Bell’s skills not merely to prevail…
but to survive.

Filled with intricate plotting, dazzling signature set pieces, and not one but two extraordinary villains, this is the work of a master writing at the height of his powers.

The Wrecker (With: Justin Scott)

In The Chase, Clive Cussler introduced an electrifying new hero, the tall, lean, no nonsense detective Isaac Bell, who, driven by his sense of justice, travels early twentieth century America pursuing thieves and killers…
and sometimes criminals much worse. It is 1907, a year of financial panic and labor unrest. Train wrecks, fires, and explosions sabotage the Southern Pacific Railroad’s Cascades express line and, desperate, the railroad hires the fabled Van Dorn Detective Agency. Van Dorn sends in his best man, and Bell quickly discovers that a mysterious saboteur haunts the hobo jungles of the West, a man known as the Wrecker, who recruits accomplices from the down and out to attack the railroad, and then kills them afterward. The Wrecker traverses the vast spaces of the American West as if he had wings, striking wherever he pleases, causing untold damage and loss of human life. Who is he? What does he want? Is he a striker? An anarchist? A revolutionary determined to displace the ‘privileged few’? A criminal mastermind engineering some as yet unexplained scheme? Whoever he is, whatever his motives, the Wrecker knows how to create maximum havoc, and Bell senses that he is far from done that, in fact, the Wrecker is building up to a grand act unlike anything he has committed before. If Bell doesn’t stop him in time, more than a railroad could be at risk it could be the future of the entire country. Filled with intricate plotting and dazzling set pieces, The Wrecker is one of the most entertaining thrillers in years.

The Sea Hunters

Clive Cussler is acclaimed worldwide as the Grandmaster of Adventure, and his series of novels starring his action hero Dirk Pitt now have over 70,000,000 copies in print. Whether it’s deep sea diving, climbing mountains, or driving classic automobiles, adventure is at the heart of Cussler’s life. As Cussler himself writes, ‘Providing my readers adventure tales based around a devil may care character by the name of Dirk Pitt is only one chapter of my existence. I’m addicted to the challenge of the search, whether it’s for lost ship wrecks, airplanes, steam locomotives, or people.’ In The Sea Hunters, his first nonfiction book, Cussler explores the special world of undersea adventure that inspired and has its fictional parallel in the Dirk Pitt novels. He describes his lifelong love for the sea and ships, and how his involvement with the search for John Paul Jones’s famous Revolutionary War ship, the Bonhomme Richard, led to his establishing the NUMA National Underwater and Marine Agency Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the discovery and preservation of historic shipwrecks. From the more than sixty shipwrecks Cussler and his NUMA volunteers have found, he has chosen the twelve most interesting, whether because of the ship’s history, the circumstances of its sinking, or the trouble, frustration, and peril that were encountered while trying to find the sunken wreck. With the same wonderful storytelling that Cussler brings to his novels, he describes his searches for such ships as the Union 24 gun frigate Cumberland, sunk during the Civil War by the Confederate ironclad CSS Virginia formerly the Merrimack; the Confederate Hunley, which became the first submarine in history to sink a warship; the U 21, a German U boat, which during World War I became the first sub to sink a warship and escape; and the American troop transport Leopoldville, which was destroyed by a German submarine on Christmas Eve, 1944, with huge loss of life; as well as Engine 51, the lost locomotive of Kiowa Creek, which roared off a storm weakened high bridge in 1878. The wrecks date as far back as 1840 and span the continental United States, the Atlantic Ocean, and the North Sea. As he does in the Dirk Pitt novels, Cussler opens each story with a creative dramatization of the ship and the way she met her end, then brings the story into the present as he describes the immense research and careful preparation so often necessary to find a long lost ship. For example, he describes the tragic fate of the steamboat Lexington, which burst into flames in the frigid winter of 1840, causing the loss of over 150 lives but sparing Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, who missed the trip only because he arrived at the dock seconds too late. There’s also the odd fate of the steamboat Charleston, which became the warship Zavala and which was so horribly damaged in a terrible Atlantic storm in 1842 that it was abandoned in a Galveston, Texas, marsh, and slowly sank from view. In tracing its location, Clive Cussler finally found it under a parking lot! Dramatic, compelling, and personal, Clive Cussler’s The Sea Hunters is as exciting and satisfy ing as the best of his Dirk Pitt novels.

The Sea Hunters II

For twenty three years, Clive Cussler’s NUMA&reg the National Underwater & Marine Agency has scoured the rivers and seas in search of lost ships of historic significance. His teams have been inundated by tidal waves, and beset by the vagaries of man and nature, but the results and the stories behind them have often been dramatic: The 2000 raising of the Confederate submarine Hunley made national headlines.

Here, then, are more true tales of sea and land going adventures, as Cussler and his crews set out to track down history.
