Original stamped cloth (typical of Bohn's mid-19th century trade editions) is worn through (only just) at tips of boards, and worn and frayed at top of spine folds, front endpaper cracked at gutter (but holding); pages are clean without any foxing; owner name back side of front free endpaper. This English language edition, translated from the 1852 German edition by Leonora and Joanna B. Horner, contains a map of the Nile and sepia engraving of Mount Barkal (frontispiece), as well as a previously unpublished (in book form) map of the Peninsula of Sinai. The Letters are succeeded by extracts from Dr. Lepsius's larger work "Die Chronologie der Egypter". New endpapers. 578pp., Index. Illustrated with tinted, hand-colored lithographic frontispiece of Mount Barkal, charts and two fold-out maps. Errata slip present. Translated from the German by Leonora and Joanna B. Horner. Dr. Lepsius was one of the principal German Egyptologists of the 19th century and this translation, the second, is the preferred edition. A very scarce title describing the work of the 1842 scientific expedition, launched by the King of Prussia, to study and investigate Egyptian monuments. An exceptionally clean copy, complete with all maps and illustrations. Fine.

578 pages, marbled end-papers. A number of scuff marks, corners bumped and a little foxing here and there, but otherwise a tight clean copy with no tears or damage; interior of book in very good condition, with a few pencil marks, including owner's name. First edition of Lepsius's (1810-1884) famous and (very readable in translation by the Horner sisters) account of the 1842-45 expedition which arguably laid the foundation for virtually all serious subsequent Egyptological study. Lepsius, a highly accomplished Prussian, was the first professional, serious scholar to study the antiquities of Egypt, travelling from Thebes to Khartoum, discovering the Decree of Canopus, adding significantly to the understanding of hieroglyphics, and producing a compendium of Egyptian antiquities which is still valuable today.
