Printed wraps. 270pp. No inscriptions. VG condition. The classic account of one woman's epic and eccentric journey up the Congo River in the 1890s. Mary Kingsley's travels were not remarkable for any geographical discoveries, rather they were so because she had been a sheltered Victorian spinster suddenly set to travelling into regions that were unhealthy, primitive, and the preserve of known cannibals. Unprotected, scarcely prepared, travelling alone and on foot, she survived her two journeys, 1893 & 1894-5, only to succumb to enteric fever while nursing boer prisoners of war in 1900. isbn: 9781842121108 Orion London. 2000 abridged edition. Upon her sudden freedom from family obligations (with the deaths of her parents), Mary Kinglsey, a sheltered Victorian spinster (some may say an eccentric), traded her stifling middle-class existence for an incredible expedition in the Congo. Mary Kingsley traversed uncharted regions of West Africa alone, on foot, collecting specimens of local fauna and trading with natives - a remarkable feat in any era, but particularly for a woman of the 1890s. After hacking her way through jungles, being fired upon by hostile tribesmen and attacked by wild animals, Kingsley emerged with no complaint more serious than a pair of tired feet. She undertook her exploits in the traditional garb (black in respect of her dead parents) of her era but lived as a native, and she found herself drawn into the life and problems of the region: its diversity of customs and beliefs; its geography and natural history; its trade network; the impact of missionaries; and many other issues of the day. Her account of her experiences, suffused with an infectious good humor, was published to immediate success in 1897 and remains a compelling tale of adventure. The Folio Society London 2007. [, AU]
