[publisher: Pasadena: Twelvetrees Press 1988] Schles's own inscribed copy. First edition. Limited to 2000 copies. Unpaginated. 233x176mm. Midnight blue cloth, blind stamped to upper cover and spine. Dust jacket is a photocopy as explained in the inscription by Ken Schles on the title page. The inscription reads: "For years I held this copy and showed it until the dust jacket disintegrated - I'm sorry - I had to put this xerox copy on the cover but it's a good book, no? This [the photograph on the title page] is in my apartment on Mott many years ago. LA 2009". In addition to the inscription, Schles has signed the title page "K.S." Tiny closed tear to the top edge of the upper cover of the dustjacket but otherwise in fine condition throughout. The photographs are printed in five inks using a special screen to reproduce the look of the original photogravure. Three pages of "Notes" which are excerpts from Lewis Mumford, Borges, Kafka, Orwell and Baudrillard. These texts are on the theme of urban decay and alienation and echo the bleakness of Schles's powerful images of the "naked netherworld" of a New York in decline, a city of gang war, underworlds, damaged people and burnt out buildings. Schles himself describes Invisible City as a dark book and it was immediately recognised as an important work (it was a New York Times "notable book of the year"): it retains its central place among the great photobooks ...

Pasadena, California Twelvetrees Press 1988 1st Edition Hardcover Fine in Near Fine jacket First edition, first printing. Signed and dated "NYC 2008" in black ink on the title page by Schles. Hardcover. Navy blue cloth-covered boards with title blindstamped on cover and spine; with photographically illustrated dust jacket. Photographs by Ken Schles. Text excerpted from Lewis Mumford, George Orwell, Jorge Luis Borges, Franz Kafka and Jean Baudrillard. Unpaginated (80 pp. ), with full-bleed black-and-white gravure plates throughout beautifully printed on heavy matte paper. 9-1/8 x 6-7/8 inches. This first edition was limited to 2000 copies. [Cited in Martin Parr and Gerry Badger, The Photobook: A History, Volume III. (London and New York: Phaidon, 2014)]. Fine in Near Fine dust jacket (some very light indentations, visible only in raking light). Schles' gritty photographs of urban life--an homage of sorts to Weegee's Naked City--are juxtaposed with key texts on life in modern cities. The end result is a disquieting book in which urban existence is presented as both exhilarating and heartless. Signed by Author.

[publisher: Twelvetrees Press, Pasadena, CA] Hardcover First Edition First edition. Hardcover. First printing of Schles' first book which was printed in and edition of only 2000 copies. A collection of gritty black and white images. A clean and tight near fine copy in a very good photo-illustrated dust jacket with a few small edge tears and minor wear. Previously, a glaring omission from the recent photo reference books but included in Parr & Badger Vol III.

[publisher: Twelvetrees Press, Pasadena CA,] First edition. Octavo; hardcover, with blind-stamped spine and upper board titles and illustrated endpapers; unpaginated (80pp.) with many monochrome illustrations. Near fine in like dustwrapper, now professionally protected by superior non-adhesive polypropylene film. Postage quoted is for a standard format octavo book. Final charges may vary depending on size and weight. For a decade, Ken Schles watched the passing of time from his Lower East Side neighbourhood. His camera fixed the instances of his observations, and these moments became the foundation of his invisible city. Friends and architecture come under the scrutiny of his lens and, when sorted and viewed in the pages of this book, a remarkable achievement of personal vision emerges. A penetrating and intimate portrayal of a world few had entrance to - or means of egress from - Invisible City stands alongside Brassai's "Paris de Nuit" and van der Elsken's "Love On The Left Bank" as one of the 20th century's great depictions of nocturnal bohemian experience. Documenting his life in New York City's East Village during its heyday in the tumultuous 1980s, Schles captured its look and attitude in delirious and dark style.
