7. Outside In (Paperback)
by Paula S. Fass
Price: USD 78.55
Dealer: AbebooksAU, AussieBookSeller
Description: ISBN10: 0195071352, ISBN13: 9780195071351, [publisher: Oxford University Press Inc, New York] Softcover Paperback. Ever since the massive immigration from Europe of the late 19th century, American society has accommodated people of many cultures, religions, languages, and expectations. The task of integration has increasingly fallen to the schools, where children are taught a common language and a set of democratic values and sent on their ways to become productive members of society. How American schools have set about educating these diverse students, and how these students'needs have altered the face of education, are issues central to the social history of the United States in the 20th century. In her pathbreaking new book Paula S. Fass presents a wideranging examination of the role of "outsiders" in the creation of modern education. Through a series of in-depth and fascinating case studies, she demonstrates how issues of pluralism have shaped the educational landscape and how various minority groups have been affected by their educational experiences. Fass first looks at how public schools absorbed the children of immigrants in the early years of the century and how those children gradually began to use the schools fortheir own social purposes. She then turns to the experiences of other groups of Americans whose struggles for educational and social opportunities have defined cultural life over the last fifty years:blacks, whose education became a major concern of the federal government in the 1930s and 1940s; women, who had access to higher education but were denied commensurate job opportunities; and Catholics, who created schools that succeeded both in protecting minority integrity and in providing Catholics with a path to American success. Along the way, she presents a wealth of fascinating and surprising detail. Through an examination of New York City high school yearbooks from the 1930s and 1940s,she shows how a student's ethnic identity determined which activities he or she would engage in and how ethnicity was etched into schooling. And she examines how the New Deal and the army in World WarII succeeded in educating large numbers of blacks and making the inequalities in their educational opportunities a critical national concern. A sweeping and highly original history of American education, Outside In helps us to understand how schools have been shaped by their students, how educational issues have merged with wider social concerns, and how outsiders have recreated schooling and culture in the 20th century. By opening up new historical terrain andrejecting a vision of outsiders as merely victims of American educational policy, the book has important implications for contemporary social and educational issues. Fass presents a wide-ranging examination of the role of "outsiders" in the creation of modern education. Through a series of in-depth case studies, she demonstrates how issues of pluralism have shaped the educational landscape and how various minority groups have been affected by their educational experiences. 10. Decorative Art 70s (Hardcover)
by Charlotte & Peter Fiell

Dealer: AbebooksAU, AussieBookSeller
Description: ISBN10: 3836584484, ISBN13: 9783836584487, [publisher: Taschen GmbH, Cologne] Hardcover Hardcover. Published annually from 1906 until 1980, Decorative Art, The Studio Yearbook was dedicated to the latest currents in architecture, interiors, furniture, lighting, glassware, textiles, metalware, and ceramics. Since the publications went out of print, the now hard-to-find yearbooks have become highly prized by collectors and dealers. This volume spotlights the futuristic, experimental aesthetic of the 1970s. After the revolutions of the '60s, the world of design and architecture became an increasingly exciting and fast-moving hotbed of ideas, rife with vehemently opposing schools and movements. In many ways it was a more extreme era for design than the previous decade.Experimentalism was everywhere, and many projects, thought not practical, were forward-thinking visions of a new kind of decorative art and design. Various groups advocated returning to natural methods, rejecting style in favor of craft or pushing the logic of industrial living to its concrete, high-rise extreme. Decorative Art 1970s includes the work of the decade's brightest stars, such as Afra and Tobia Scarpa, Luigi Colani, Achille Castiglioni, Kisho Kurokawa, Norman Foster, Richard Meier, and Theo Crosby. With dramatic expressions of futurism alongside rustic eco-trends, this book collects the best of 1970s design in one expertly curated and annotated volume, drawn from the now-classic collectible, Decorative Art, The Studio Yearbook. Across metalware, textiles, ceramics, and more, explore a decade of fast-moving ideas and vehemently opposing schools and movements. This long-standing competition has weathered many challenges, including major developments in the sport, wars, economic turmoil, an epidemic, and technological and social change not imagined when the teams first met in 1894. Through all the years and contests, thousands of athletes have competed for pride and a belief that this game was the pinnacle of their football days. A Game That Forged Rivals shares the stories, dramatic clashes, and challenges that tested these young men both on and off the field. Compiled from newspaper articles, school yearbooks, game programs, eyewitness accounts, letters, photos, and archival records, A Game That Forged Rivals not only chronicles the development of football from its earliest days, but also tells the story of two communities that saw, in football, a way to grasp civic pride. Description: ISBN10: 1953397263, ISBN13: 9781953397263, [publisher: Litprime Solutions] Hardcover nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - This book is a memoir written by an African American woman who grew up in the rural south during the late 1930s and 1940s. Being poor and having to confront three types of prejudices-racial, colorism, which is light versus dark complexions within the Negro race, and poverty-affected her self-esteem and feelings of self-worth. She was of a darker color than most of her relatives and had nappy hair whereas theirs was straight or loose curls. She dreamed of being a different person and in at least one instance, she tried to change her personal appearance in a non-sensible manner that could have been dangerous. Were also family problems while she was growing up that added to her misery. She felt that she did not belong and was not comfortable in any group in society; that there was nothing of value in her to contribute to her life or to anyone else's. However, she worked hard in school hoping to make her family proud. Consequently, she was elected editor of the high school weekly newspaper and editor of the senior class yearbook. She finished high school and college with good grades and married a U.S. Air Force Officer on the evening of their commencement day. In her early twenties, just as her self esteem was improving, an uncontrollable illness made her feel that she was living between heaven and hell. This sometimes puts a strain on her marriage. However, she and her husband loved each other dearly and were blessed with two lovely daughters. She never lost her interest in writing. In the mid-sixties, she took the Famous Writers' Course and received good critiques. Although she selected Sociology for her Master's Degree, she continued to enhance her writing skills by trying to write impressively when doing business letters, grant applications, reports, and other documents. Several professional, academic positions gave her many opportunities to write and helped her reach goals that, as a child, she never dreamed she would be selected for or could accomplish. And in these new positions, helping others gave her fulfillment and insights into what really matters in life. rough her writings, the reader becomes more knowledgeable about life as a black person and can learn unknown facts about race relations, working in positions that are not well- known by the general public; experiences with sexism, and combating everyday problems. Description: ISBN10: 054723824X, ISBN13: 9780547238241, [publisher: Mariner Books] Softcover Paperback. How is it that we can recognize photos from our high school yearbook decades later, but cannot remember what we ate for breakfast yesterday? And why are we inclined to buy more cans of soup if the sign says "LIMIT 12 PER CUSTOMER" rather than "LIMIT 4 PER CUSTOMER?" In Kluge, Gary Marcus argues convincingly that our minds are not as elegantly designed as we may believe. The imperfections result from a haphazard evolutionary process that often proceeds by piling new systems on top of old ones--and those systems don't always work well together. The end product is a "kluge," a clumsy, cobbled-together contraption. Taking us on a tour of the essential areas of human experience--memory, belief, decision making, language, and happiness--Marcus unveils a fundamentally new way of looking at the evolution of the human mind and simultaneously sheds light on some of the most mysterious aspects of human nature. A New York University psychologist argues that the mind is a "kluge"-a clumsy, cobbled-together contraption-as he ponders the accidents of evolution that caused this structure and what we can do about it. Description: ISBN10: 1977235204, ISBN13: 9781977235206, [publisher: Outskirts Press] Hardcover nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - The author, A. (Aletha) Roberta Hutchison Ostar's (aka Hutchie in high school, Bobbie in college and as an adult) educational career began with two notable events in grade school-in first grade she refused to hold her pencil correctly for the Parker Penmanship writing model; she got a D in spelling in third grade. Both events were unacceptable in her family. So she proceeded to graduate from Camp Hill High School as valedictorian in 1945 and was Editor-in-chief of the HIGH LIGHT, the school paper her senior year. At Penn State she continued her journalism career by choosing it as her major and being named Editor of LA VIE, the yearbook, and News Editor of the DAILY COLLEGIAN, the student newspaper in her senior year, 1948. After working one year as a news reporter for the MCKEESPORT DAILY NEWS In Pennsylvania, and one year each as a book designer at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, Press and the Thomas Y. Crowell Publishers in New York City, she followed the tradition of her times by retiring to have her children and becoming an active community volunteer: neighborhood newsletter, Girl Scouts, leader and adult educator, church volunteer, etc.In 1979, with two children in college and one in 11th grade, as a volunteer, she created and managed the annual programs for spouses of the presidents of state universities and colleges for the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (aascu) of which her husband Allan had been president since 1965. This was at the height of the feminist movement when the role of spouses as fund raisers and representatives of their schools-unpaid, of course-was a very controversial topic. She conducted three surveys of these spouses for aascu and then, sponsored by the MacArthur Foundation and the Lilley Foundation, she published a survey of the representational roles of a group of college and university presidents and spouses from all universities in the US-public and private-titled PUBLIC ROLES, PRIVATE LIVES.Now, at the age of 92 she has finally written down the stories and some of the lore of her fiercely loyal Iowa Mother, as her children had been begging her to do! I sent the short story to Collier's magazine, where it was immediately rejected. I redeemed my pride by later winning a school-wide essay contest at Cumberland High School and becoming an at-large reporter for our school paper, The Chronicle. As a senior, I was named literary editor of our yearbook. My English teacher, Mr. Skahan, suggested I switch to the college course since he saw me as scholarship material, but that was too much of a reach in those Great Depression years. After graduating in 1943, I worked in an office, married in 1949, and became a mother in 1950 and then a single parent in 1952. My writing would have to wait until January 1986 when, at the age of sixty, I launched my literary career.' Violet has had twenty-four personal-experience stories, articles, how-to pieces, and short stories published. She also wrote a column for the Foxboro Reporter in her former home of Foxboro, Massachusetts. In California, since 1993, she contributed to 'Two Cents,' an opinion column in the San Francisco Chronicle maintained by a pool of citizens. She is an active member and Secretary of Writers West of Alameda Inc. This is her fourth book. The first, In the Village Lonsdale, was published in 2006. Her second, A Gossamer Cord, was published in 2011. Her third, Jeremy's Cottage, was published in 2013. [Einbeck, Germany] [Publication Year: 2016]

Being poor and having to confront three types of prejudices-racial, colorism, which is light versus dark complexions within the Negro race, and poverty-affected her self esteem and feelings of self-worth. She was of a darker color than most of her relatives and had nappy hair whereas theirs was straight or loose curls. She dreamed of being a different person and in at least one instance, she tried to change her personal appearance in a non-sensible manner that could have been dangerous. ere were also family problems while she was growing up that added to her misery. She felt that she did not belong and was not comfortable in any group in society; that there was nothing of value in her to contribute to her life or to any one else's. However, she worked hard in school hoping to make her family proud. Consequently, she was elected editor of the high school weekly newspaper and editor of the senior class yearbook. She finished high school and college with good grades and married a U.S. Air Force Officer on the evening of their commencement day. In her early twenties, just as her self esteem was improving, an uncontrollable illness made her feel that she was living between heaven and hell. is sometimes put a strain on her marriage. However, she and her husband loved each other dearly and were blessed with two lovely daughters. She never lost her interest in writing. In the mid sixties she took the Famous Writers' Course and received good critiques. Although she selected Sociology for her Master's Degree, she continued to enhance her writing skills by trying to write impressively when doing business letters, grant applications, reports and other documents.
