Octavo (8 1/4 x 5 1/2 in.). [6, incl. half-title), 153, (1, blank) pp., 6 b&w inserted plates with captions (7 1/8 x 5 3/8 in.). Originally published by Charles Carrington in 1898, this title is an English translation of Instruction libertine, ou Dialogues entre Charles et Justine sur la theorie physique de l'amour et les diverses manieres de s'en procurer les plaisirs materiels ("Sadopolis, 1860" i.e. Bruxelles: J.-P. Blanche, 1870). "Malay" was the pseudonym of J. René Gockinga (1893-1962), who, born in the Dutch East Indies, moved to Amsterdam c. 1913, and resided in New York City 1924-c.1935. Influenced by Aubrey Beardsley and Dutch Symbolist, Carel de Nerée, his work was exhibited during the summer 1917 at the d’Audretsch gallery in The Hague. While in NYC, he worked as an artist for Jake Brussel, the notorious publisher of erotica. Mendes records that "There was at least one clandestine reprint done in the U.S. 8 x 5 1/2 inches, [same collation]. 8 plates." Brussel offered the book with or without plates, and if ordered with plates offered them with hand-coloring. No hand-colored copies have been recorded. These plates originally appeared in Brussel's American edition of Venus in India; Brussel used the extras to illustrate the title under notice. Only one copy with eight plates is known to exist; it is in a private collection. Rare without plates, absolutely scarce with them. C.f. Mendes 111-G, note.
