[3], iv-xii, [1], 2-564; [3], 2-556 pp. Blue blindstamped cloth lettered in gold on each spine. Translated from the Latin with notes by Henry T. Riley, Esq., B.A. Barrister-at-Law. Later endpapers and pastedowns. A history of "dark-age" and early medieval Europe. The preface mentions two editions printed in 1596 and 1601, with this being the first reprint since those two editions. The first two editions, however, were printed in Latin. Lowndes 1126; Appendix 303. Oxford DNB, David Corner, "Howden [Hoveden], Roger of". Roger of Howden was a parson and chronicler for Yorkshire, and spent time in Palestine. He wrote a history of Henry II's reign, and continued to work on his broad history of Europe until his death in 1202. A Very Good set with minor rubbing and traces of fading to the boards. 1853. H.G.
