7. A Memoir of Thomas Bewick Written By Himself

Price: USD 8.59
Dealer: Biblio, CHARLES BOSSOM
Description: London: The Cresset Press. Very Good/Very Good. Date: 1961. Hard Cover. 8vo Dust jacket complete, unclipped. Original cloth boards with bright gilt titling on spine. No ownership marks. Frontis. 204 pages clean and tight. Illustrated with a number of wood engravings by Thomas Bewuiek. . Edited with an introduction by Montague Weekley. Thomas Bewick stands pre - eminent among wood-engravers and ranks with the greatest illustrators. His Quadrupeds and Birds, successful popularizations of Natural History, with their marvellous wood-engravings of beasts and birds, and the famous tailpieces for which he is now chiefly remembered, were the astonishing by-products of his workshop in St. Nicholas's churchyard in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, through which flowed a medley of jobs, such as coffin- and door-plates, sword blades, silver plate, bar bills, tradesmen's cards, banknotes, seals, clock-faces, invitation cards, and the metal moulds into which glass bottles were blown. Bewick's autobiography is a unique account of an artist-tradesman's life in the England of George III and has long been recognized as a minor classic of its kind. It is one of those repositories in which, as in Pepys and Boswell, an everyday past lies stored ' 'gainst the tooth of time and razure of oblivion.' Particularly enchanting are Bewick's recollections of his peasant boyhood in the Tyne Valley, apprenticeship years in Newcastle, and a wanderjahr comprising a long tramp through parts of the Highlands and a stay of some nine months in London. The Cresset Library edition has been edited by Mr Montague Weekley, author of the standard critical biography of Bewick (Thomas Bewick, 1953). His text (abridged only so much as to exclude the rambling homilies to which Bewick was fatally prone) is derived from a collation of Bewick's original manuscript in the British Museum, with Austin Dobson's standard edition of 1887, long since out of print. . 1961. The Cresset Press [GB]
