Arguably the most decisive chapter in Israel's political history, the incident rocked the corridors of power: its political repercussions are felt to this day. Yet until now, this fascinating story has never been told. Shabtai Teveth, author of the acclaimed biography of Ben~Gurion, uncovered a wealth of classified documents and interviewed the key players to tell of a covert military enterprise gone disastrously wrong. In the early 1950s, a team of Israeli agents was ordered ~ without prior knowledge of either the cabinet or the military high command~to stage a series of bombings of American and British institutions in Egypt, in an attempt to forestall Great Britain's planned withdrawal from the Suez. Betrayed by their commander, the agents were captured and put on trial in Cairo. Who gave the orders for the sabotage attempts? Was it defense minister Pinhas Lavon, Ben~Gurion's hand~picked successor? Or was it Director of Military Intelligence Benyamin Givly, a cunning and ruthlessly ambitious officer? Both denied responsibility, and their dispute turned into a charade of character assassination, forgery, cover~up, and vendetta that forced Lavon's resignation in 1955. Lavon's vigorous campaign to rehabilitate his name broke the nation into two camps and instigated bitter in~fighting between Military Intelligence and Massad, Israel's CIA. The episode shattered Israel's self~image as an ethical society building a new nation on ancient biblical principles and ultimately brought down Ben~Gurian and his Labor Party. Ben~Gurion's Spy explores the political implications of the Lavon affair, demonstrating how the episode helped to usher in Menahem Begin's Likud~whose doctrine claims the whole of Palestine~and to initiate a radical shift in defense policy from restraint to violent, sometimes reckless, retribution. Unlike similar incidents like Iran~Contra or the Dreyfus affair, the Israeli analogue saw no judicial inquiry or public hearings, nor any published documents. Teveth fills in the vital information, employing classified documents including minutes of secret cabinet and military tribunal investigations, as well as interviews with key actors and the private correspondence of Givly and his doting secretary, Dalia Carmel. Ben~Gurion's Spy is a fast~paced narrative of upheaval in Israel's political and military life and of innocence lost in a young nation.

Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. In the early 1950s, a group of ill-trained Israeli agents staged a series of disaterous bombings of American and British institutions in Egypt, in an attempt to forestall Britain's final withdrawal drom the Suez. When the plot was revealed in 1955, defense minister Pinhas Lavon - Ben Gurion's handpicked sucessor - was foreced to resign. Drawing upon uncovered classified documents and interviews with key players, this text recounts the Lavon affair in Israel in 1963. It tells how the affair, which toppled the governemnt of David Ben-Gurion, the nation's founding father, rocked the corridors of power in Israel. It asks questions such as: who gave the orders for the sabotage attempts? was it Lavon? or was it the Director of Military Intelligence, Benyamin Givli? The text examines how the affair shattered Israel's self-image as an ethical society building a new nation on ancient religious principles. It considers how the event helped to plant the seeds for the feared Israeli secret service, Mossad, and for the shift in defense policy from restraint to violent retribution that marked the Begin era. Drawing upon uncovered classified documents and interviews with key players, this text recounts the Lavon affair in Israel in 1963. It tells how the affair, which toppled the government of David Ben-Gurion, the nation's founding father, rocked the corridors of power in Israel.
