Summer, 1983. As fall approaches and the summer stock theaters on Cape Cod close for the season, three promising young actors and a stagehand pile into an old Ford Fairlane and head for a vacation resort in Maine. Hoping for a relaxing getaway before pursuing their dreams, they instead encounter a bizarre storm while on a lonely stretch of highway and soon find themselves stranded in the strange rural community of Boxer Hills. At first glance it seems a harmless little backwoods town, but Boxer Hills has a horrible secret and a deadly history. It's a place of horrific age-old rituals and a legendary evil that will let no one escape without paying a terrible price. Before the sun rises on a new day, they will have to fight their way through the night and out of town, or risk falling prey to a demonic creature so profane few will even speak its name. They were young, reckless and chasing Hell. What they hadn't counted on was actually catching it.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 23, 2013One step beyond the outer limits of the twilight zone lies the darkside of one of the strangest towns you never want to visit. It's stuck in the 1940's and once you arrive, you don't return. Another winner from Greg Gifune.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 17, 2010Format: HardcoverThe doomed summer road-trip: perhaps one of the most frequently used vehicles for thrillers and horror movies, novels, and stories. Of course, if offers the perfect set-up: several friends or strangers lost alone on a deserted interstate or back-road miles from urban civilization, far from help.
And really, how many times have we all taken a "wrong turn" and found ourselves in a small, crumbling little hamlet that's off the map and forgotten by time? Even in a world that grows increasingly claustrophobic and connected by technology, plenty of cracks still exist for lonely wanderers to fall through, and this is what gives the premise of "Catching Hell" such chilling plausibility.
It's the summer of 1983 and four friends have embarked on one last joyride before they go their separate ways. All members of a Cape Cod summer theater, they'll soon be starting new lives: one in a prestigious theater school, two off to the city to chase their dreams - however futilely - and one just looking for a good time. This road-trip is one last chance to enjoy their friendship in a carefree way they may never be able to recapture.
At first the community of Boxer Hills seems quaint and antique; a small town that's somehow missed twenty years or so of progress. Soon enough, however, our travelers discover a darkness lingering beneath the surface of this dust-covered town. An insidious, ancient evil holds Boxer Hills in its grip, and only by descending into the depths of depravity and violence do they stand a chance - in hell - of someday escaping.
In regards to plot, "Catching Hell" doesn't necessarily offer many surprises, but it's sound and well constructed. Gifune's prose is the real attraction here; vivid in language and specificity, neat and tight, offering very concrete images with just the right words. He instills a chilling mood and ambiance also, making this the perfect read for a warm summer day...but perhaps when safe at home and not out wandering lonely country roads on a summer vacation.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 9, 2017Format: HardcoverFast and merciless, 'Catching Hell' takes you on a journey to hell...but not back. I loved that the story took no tension-breaking detours and did not linger with unnecessary details, while at the same time telling just enough to reasonably explain the background history and flesh out the characters. This is what makes writing outstanding, and Mr. Gifune definitely knows how to do it.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 14, 2010Amazon CustomerFormat: HardcoverIn 1983 the summer stock season on Cape Cod is over. Three actors and a stagehand drive a 1967 Ford from the Cape to Maine; a six to seven hour drive as a respite before New York City theater or college. On a lonely stretch of I-95 in Maine heading to Banger, the quartet (Billy, Stefan, Alex, and Tory) are hammered by an odd violent storm that comes out of nowhere and seems to attack their Fairlane. Then a bird crashes into the windshield leaving behind blood, no corpse and Billy believing it is the harbinger of death.
They exit in Boxer Hills, population 108. None of the fearless foursome expected anything beyond a small rustic village. Instead they find what appears to be a ghost town stuck in the Truman-Eisenhower Era. They soon learn to escape from Boxer Hills means surviving until the sun rises. This village is where seventeenth century rituals wrought a malevolence that in the late twentieth century still welcomes guests permanently.
This is a terrific horror thriller that starts a bit slow ironically while driving on I-95, but once the quartet leave the Interstate for a rural stop, the pace accelerates into hyperspeed as the protagonists are not just Catching Hell, they seem in hell. Readers will feel they are caught in the middle of this tense horror thriller enhanced by the B&W drawings as Boxer Hills is a Maine version of the Hotel California; once you're inside, you never leave; the four friends learn the only out is death or survive until the sun rises following a night of evil.

3.0 out of 5 stars Catching Hell (2010)
Catching Hell (2010) by Greg F Gifune is #20 in the Cemetery Dance novella series. It is a story about three aspiring young actors and a stagehand who decide to take a short road trip, for the theatres in Cape Cod are, like the summer, coming to a close. They head for Maine in an old Ford Fairlane and find themselves stranded in the remote town of Boxer Hills. The town, which is essentially a backwoods Hicksville-type deal, turns out to have a dark past and the townspeople are involved in the supernatural and the occult, and rituals of long-ago. Our four leading characters discover that it is quite impossible to leave Boxer Hills, no matter how hard they try, and they must fight for their lives whilst they attempt to rediscover civilization.
Like the other reviewer here, I have to agree that Catching Hell is another in a long line of books and films that have used the ''stranded in a weird town in the middle of nowhere'' concept and there is really nothing special or particularly original about this story. On the plus side, the writing is good and the book accelerates at a quick pace. Overall ... a decent road movie-esque novella. I purchased the Kindle edition from Amazon and it contains no glaring errors, no more than there were in my Cemetery Dance hardcover anyway. The book is nicely formatted and the cover art is almost as good as the Cemetery Dance jacket by Jill Bauman.
