Excerpt from book: Ill AN AFTERWORD TO ' THE KREUTZER SONATA' Many letters from strangers have reached and still continue to reach me asking for a clear and simple explanation of what I meant by the story called ' The Kreutzer Sonata.' I will try, to the best of my ability, to do what is asked of me, and explain briefly the essence of what I wished that story to convey, as well as the conclusions which, I think, may be derived from it. In the first place I wished to say that a strong opinion has taken root in all classes of our society, and is supported by pseudo science, to the effect that sexual intercourse is indispensable to health, and that, since marriage is sometimes out of the question, sexual intercourse without marriage and without involving the man in any obligation beyond a monetary payment, is perfectly natural, and should therefore be encouraged. To such an extent has this opinion prevailed and so firmly is it established, that parents on the advice of doctors actually arrange debauchery for their children ; while Governments whose only purpose should be the moral well being of their citizens organize debauchery by regulating an entire class of women destined to perish physically and morally for the satisfaction of the supposed needs of men ; and unmarried people, The registration and medical examination of prostitutes, which was long practised in our garrisoned towns, is still generally, systematically, and unblushingly carried on in Russian towns, on behalf of the civil as well as the military population. with untroubled consciences, yield themselves to debauchery. I intended to say that this is wrong; for it cannot be right that some people should he destroyed body and soul for the health of others, any more than it can be right that some people for their heal...
