        Muze Annotation:
Predating the Undertones by almost a year, Stiff Little Fingers were the most successful of the first generation of Belfast bands to take the 1976 advent of the Sex Pistols, the Damned, and the Clash as a clarion call for their own mini-revolution. As their founder, Jake Burns, relates in this entertaining book-length interview with longtime band fan Alan Parker, journeys to rehearsals were likely as not to be interrupted by riots or bombings; SLF were arguably born of a more authentic revolutionary experience than any of their mainland counterparts. With their first two singles, 'Suspect Device' and 'Alternative Ulster,' they quickly became a popular fixture in the second wave of U.K. bands following in the wake of the Clash and the Pistols. Burns, a witty and engaging raconteur, takes us from his early-'70s musical education, watching the legendary Irish guitarist Rory Gallagher, through the band's early gigs, and the release of its first, self-produced single, whose packaging was painstakingly assembled by the band members themselves. Improbably, Stiff Little Fingers' career continued throughout the '80s, while the 1990s found them recast as punk survivors with a whole new audience. Fascinating and informative, STIFF LITTLE FINGERS is a remarkable firsthand oral history of one of Northern Ireland's most enduring musical institutions.
