Book Description: All European countries face educational problems that result from the co existence of a national standard variety of language and a range of indigenous dialects. There has been a considerable amount of serious research into the issues during the last 25 years, particularly in Continental Europe, but until now relatively little of this research has been published in English. This volume brings together research that has been carried out in Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and West Germany. It contains classroom initiatives designed to cope with potential educational problems arising from the relationship between dialect and standard language. Much of this work is now available in English for the first time. There is a great deal to be gained from sharing research findings and pooling ideas with people who are involved in similar problems, but in different settings. It is hoped that this volume marks the beginning of a shared European perspective on dialect and education and the beginning of European co operation on a wider scale.
