        Publisher's Note:
Throughout the Americas the poetry written by Black women poets has been greatly neglected. In Canada, where Black people have lived for many generations, there is a small body of literature that speaks of their presence. Over the last fifteen years, the voices of Black poets were being heard. In this second anthology of Black women poets we discover passionate & resonate voices as they take up the challenge of their foremothers to fight for freedom, equality & justice. Established poets such as Dionne Brand, Claire Harris & Marlene Noubese Philip use new linguistic forms that reach across time & space to embody the role of Black women in the new world. New poets, meanwhile, like Afua Cooper & Ahdri Zhina Mandiela bring to their works a variety of startling attitudes & vernaculars, using both patois & standard English to connote the uniqueness of a people in a language at once intensely personal & immediately social. Throughout, these poems carry the universal themes of pain & love & friendship, while sharing the loss of culture & language together with the joy of being female.
