        Muze Annotation:
An essential primer to the history of the down-and-dirty R&B offshoot, Dave Thompson's FUNK contains a wealth of instructive comment on many of the genre's essential performers, including well-known figures like James Brown, George Clinton, Bootsy Collins, and the Meters. In addition, Thompson covers lesser-known (but no less funky) talents, like Jimmy Castor, whose song 'Bertha Butt Boogie' was the epitome of early-1970s funk, and the Bar-Kays, originally Otis Redding's backing band, four of whose members perished in the same airplane accident that killed Redding, but who regrouped to achieve considerable success in the '70s. Thompson is an informative and enthusiastic guide, keeping his condensed artist biographies to the essentials while retaining an authoritatively knowledgeable prose style. Split into four parts, from 'Pre-Funk,' which includes the influential Nigerian musician Fela Ransome Kuti, to 'New School,' which features more recent bands like the Washington DC band Trouble Funk, who were in the forefront of the popular late-'80s go-go movement, the book provides a comprehensive overview of the history of the genre, as well as valuable discographies of all the included artists. FUNK is an indispensable tool in the understanding and appreciation of this multi-faceted, gritty music.
