Mat Coward Books Overview

In and Out

Bull’s Eye It’s Murder Whether he’s miserably depressed or buoyantly cheerful, a day with the delightfully unpredictable Detective Inspector Don Packham is never dull for his partner, DC Frank Mitchell especially when it involves murder. When the body of Yvonne ‘Chalkie’ Wood, a member of the Hollow Head Pub’s darts team, is found bludgeoned in the ladies’ lavatory during a night of celebration over a championship game, Packham and Mitchell accept an unspoken challenge from a clever killer. Though the victim had her share of enemies and each member of the team wished her dead, her untimely murder puts the detectives on a case of money, sex and secrets that requires luck, skill and an excellent aim to solve.

Over and Under

The annual cricket match between the Comedians and the Writers is a little more eventful than usual when Bruce Lester is murdered with a baseball bat. Detective Inspector Don Packham interrogates the many suspects. Murder is a serious business. But bringing a baseball bat into a cricket pavilion that is one unspeakable crime.

Open and Closed

The Bath Street public library in Cowden is an impressive, modern facility that was only recently opened. Now, the borough council wants to close it as part of a ‘rationalization’ package. So, one autumn night, militant library lovers enter the building and begin unfurling their banners and bedrolls. The branch librarian locks the doors behind them…
and the occupation of Bath Street library is underway. The mood is buoyant, full of hope and solidarity at least, until a garrotted corpse is found sitting in the librarian’s office. DI Don Packham recognizes the deceased straight away: Bert Rosen was a much loved local character. The Co*ckney son of Jewish refugees, Bert was a veteran of World War II and had spent his long life fighting in the workingman’s corner. Plenty opposed his politics, but it’s hard to find anyone to say a bad word for the man himself. So who, amongst the anti cuts campaigners gathered in the library that night, might have killed him? Don, outraged at plans to close the library, reckons they should forget about the murder, and just arrest the council on a charge of cultural vandalism. DC Frank Mitchell, meanwhile, despite everyone telling him that community pressure groups are an essential part of a healthy democracy, is increasingly convinced that the lunatics have taken over the asylum. And the whole investigation is complicated by the astonishing object found in the dead man’s pocket…
Mat Coward is a Dagger and Edgar nominated short story writer. He lives in Somerset, in the UK.

Classic Radio Comedy

Pocket Essentials is a dynamic series of books that are concise, lively, and easy to read. Packed with facts as well as expert opinions, each book has all the key information you need to know about such popular topics as film, television, cult fiction, history, and more. Jules and Sand, Bluebottle and Eccles, Tony Hancock and Sid James. Between them, these three very different shows from the ’50s and ’60s define and encapsulate the glory days of radio comedy. And what’s more, where would contemporary radio and TV comedy be without them? Exploring the origins and lasting influence of the ‘Big Three,’ this book focuses on the comedy rather than the lives of the men behind the microphones.

More than 200,000 words of great crime and suspense fictionEach year, Ed Gorman and Martin H. Greenberg, editors of The World’s Finest Mystery and Crime Stories, have reached farther past the boundaries of the United States to find the very best suspense from the world over. The Last Noel

SANITY CLAUSE Steve Brewer When a panicked elf finds Santa’s dead body at a local mall, private investigator Bubba Mabry is in the hot seat. Merry tidings of greed, betrayal and Grinch like deviousness soon follow as a grumbling Bubba hunts for a yuletide killer in a tale of murder, mistletoe and misery. FINDING CHARITY Catherine Dain Hollywood actress turned therapist Faith Cassidy discovers that the disappearance of a young prostitute named Charity and the murder of Faith’s good friend Tori are connected in ominous ways. She’s soon on the trail of a killer, grimly aware that her season promises to be anything but calm and bright. DEEP AND CRISP Mat Coward DCI Don Packham and DC Frank Mitchell investigate the murder of a man who belonged to an odd anti Christmas club: dedicated to ignoring all the cheesy gifts, carols and yuletide silliness. But did their idea of fun include murder by tree branch whacking? It’s a case as clever and unpredictable as Packham himself. THE THREE WISE WOMEN Linda Berry Ogeechee Georgia police officer Trudy Roundtree is pulled into the investigation of a body found in the straw of a nativity scene parade float. Trudy finds an unlikely clue buried in the mystery of a decades old unsolved murder and with those keeping its secrets.
